Owen is a goal scorer - full stop. He's hit the net regularly at every level he's played. His attributes aren't really a concern - his currency is goals and he ALWAYS delivers. Who cares if he only had pace - a poor touch - and a lack of creativity? When he was hitting the net for us - I couldn't give a flying one whether it went in off his arse - so long as it went in.

Personally - I'd be happy if he came back when Robbie leaves at the end of the season (as I think he will)
    Liverpool born and bred.

crouch has got 8 allready he will.
Gerrard will goon a scoring run i am sure

Greedy fooker for leaving and not giving Rafa a chance he has go all that he deserves since he left.

But he was a top striker and still is young enough to regain that form.

I would take him back but not for a large transfer fee

              Too injury prone.!

That's the nuts for me. However, i still appreciate wht MO did for us.

He just felt he was better than he was. Shame.

I don't think there's any "if" about it with Fowler. He won't get another contract. He was pretty anonymous last night I'm sure you'll agree.

The "Owen only had pace" thing is a bit of a mantra with alot of fans. A bit like the Fowler one "Robbie's the best finisher in the history of football". Personally I thought Owen was sheer class. He always worked his socks off, even if he wasn't playing well. When he left us his goal scoring rate at Madrid was excellent and he was doing very well at Newcastle before his injury. If he was available tomorrow all Europe's top clubs would have him, which says it all

Yes but something like 1 in 5 of Shearer's goals was from the penalty spot, so he was never likely to go very long without scoring. He insisted that taking penalties was a clause in his contract. Bumped up his goalscoring stats no end and people never remember the free pot-shots at goal from 12 yards, just that he scored x goals

It was a ****ty way MO dealt with leaving Liverpool but in hindsight we was a club going nowhere with Houllier in charge and to be honest, if I was in the same position maybe I would have done the same.

Michael Owen is an impact player. He could be great on his day without doubt but you couldn't imagine him being around like somebody like Shearer or Rush was into their 30's. His greatest asset which was his pace just wouldn't be there then. So you can see why he tried to get the trophies while he could and at the time, he had a better chance with Madrid than with us.

I still love the irony that he went there to with the CL and we won it instead!
Forget all this stuff about pace - Owen scored plenty of real poacher's goals. Getting on the end of rebounds and crosses etc. People have short memories

Good points Bob i think we should not forget what he done for us but the graveyard is full of men that are dispensible and we have got on good without him

What you're forgetting is that Rafa had already taken over when Owen left.
Owen should have signed a contract and given Rafa a year.

but Cisse never won the european footballer of the year award. however, I never really took to Owen as England was clearly his priority. That much is even more apparent if you've got the stamina to read his mind-numbingly boring autobiography!! Even after the first few chapters it's clear that he's not the sort of person you'd want to hang out with - a complete dullard.

I disagree. Europe's top clubs presumably means us, barcelona, real madrid, milan, bayern, juventus(?), chelsea, man utd......Owen would be lucky to get a place on the bench at any of these.

I'm not saying that he didn't get his fair share of poachers goals, I just don't think Owen would have the length of career certainly at the top end of football than a more predatory striker. I could never see a player like Michael Owen playing for us at 33.
Twin boys - now arriving late August 2008.

Its gonna be Fernando and Gerrard if I get my way!
