Daniel Agger injured in bizarre dumbbell accident
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed how a freak accident in the gym has left Daniel Agger in a race against time to be fit for Saturday’s Premier League game against Southampton.

The 28-year-old Danish defender was ruled out of last night’s 2-2 draw with Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium after a scrape with a dumbbell over the weekend.

Agger, who played in all three of Liverpool’s opening league fixtures, suffered a side injury in trying to prevent a heavy dumbbell from falling on his foot. His quick-wittedness prevented his foot from being crushed but left him nursing a sharp pain in his side.

Rodgers, who in Agger’s absence partnered Martin Skrtel with £18million French international centre back Mamadou Sakho, said; “It’s too early to say whether or not he will be fit for the weekend.

“He just had a real freak incident in the gym just before he came out for training. He over-stretched when he was trying to prevent a dumb bell from falling on his foot.

“He has just yanked his side, so we are waiting to see if that settles down over the next couple of days. But if it doesn't we have got ample replacements now and that's why we brought in extra players to cover us for any injuries. “

Twenty-three-year-old Sakho had a mixed debut against the Swans, showing signs of genuine class at times, but making one or two genuine errors to boot.

Rodgers said; “I was pleased because the lad hasn’t played too much football of late.”

Daniel Sturridge is also likely to undergo treatment between now and the weekend after confirming that his thigh was far from 100 per cent, despite a fourth successive goal-scoring performance this season.

Sakho's strength and aerial ability could be useful against Lambert and Osvaldo, but I really hope Agger is fit for this as he's still our best defender.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

I really want to see Kolo back in the middle of our defence for the Saints match...

He's a monster in there...The Kop love him...He'll put Lambert in his pocket...

Sakho had a decent debut last night, but done nothing to suggest he should be ahead of Kolo..

No, Saturday 3pm kick-off. Been a while since we had one of them.

Live on Viasat so it shouldn't be a problem to find a stream.

Disappointing Coutinho might be out of this game (looking at the Twitter thread). Or Brendan playing mind games? We're pretty devoid of ideas without him at the moment. Suarez can't come back quick enough.

At least Gerrard will be properly rested and Toure / Moses better prepared for the game. Could really do with winning all our home games.

Suothampton have been decent defensively too.

Sturridge, Moses and Aspas/Sterling should still be too much for them though.

Rightback is still a concern but Agger and Toure returning to the first team fold should shore up the defence.

Three CB's for this one? Wisdom isn't a RB and hasn't been playing well for me, not sure on Kellys fitness and we do seemingly have a few CBs at the club at the moment.

Hoping Coutinho is fit for this but I don't think he will be.

                          Assuming Agger is fit.

                          Mignolet
                          Wisdom - Kolo - Agger - Enrique
                          Lucas - Gerrard
                          Henderson - Allen/Alberto - Moses
                          Sturridge

If Allen is fit, I'd put him in midfield, otherwise I'd play Alberto there. I want to give Wisdom another chance. We could use another playmaker.

Would be harsh on Skrtel to get dropped, although I too would probably go with Kolo/Agger.

Skrtel can then be unleashed against United again.
