is it a proper sit down having a meal in a restaurant type do - ie a table is booked for 12 of you, and you have to be there - that i can almost understand, but still - i'd do the first 45 minutes of the meal, excuse myself to go the toilet then feel 'sick' for 45 mins and have to run back to my apartment

but if it's a party, a lot of people there, mingling about etc - na mate, you're having a mare.

It's a sit down with food speeches and songs kind of family stuff stretching over some hours. That's how it's done around here (would much rather a real party). But I'm just not the type to make excuses and bailing on something that means a lot to someone for the sake of a football match that I can watch a few hours later I will sit nicely, eat my food, nod interested when someone makes a speech and have my thoughts elsewhere D:
