That was more close than I thought it would be. We didn't quite hit the level we can, but mainly I have to take my hat off to Southampton they were in much better condition than I would have thought! They pressed incredibly well, and managed to close Coutinho and Gerrard down exceptionally well. No room for either playmaker to do anyhing in. Very solid organisational perforamce from them.
Our defensive side of things also showed it still needs some work, a bit to easy to get out of position at times.
But nice with an opening day win to get the worst nerves away, and hopefully we will kick off against City next week
To put it in gentleman's terms if you've been out for a night and you're looking for a young lady and you pull one, some weeks they're good looking and some weeks they're not the best. Our performance today would have been not the best looking bird but at least we got her in the taxi. She wasn't the best looking lady we ended up taking home but she was very pleasant and very nice, so thanks very much, let's have a coffee

Personally I think that is rubbish, Lucas played well in the first half winning tackles and breaking up play so I have no idea where they got that from, Johnson on the other hand was total ****.
Very impressive display from Lovren and more so from Manquillo considering he is still a young lad making his debut in a foreign country in only the 7th league game of his senior career, reminds me very much of a young Arbeloa

Also think Gerrard just can't do 90 minutes anymore
Ok, went to the game so I didn't pick up on any of the chat or commentary
Johnson was absolutely awful - he offered nothing offensively, often caught rocking on his heels and was poor in support of whoever was directly in front of him. He looked lost. Sooner Moreno comes in the better. Glen is finished now, hurts me to say it as i have been a big fan of his, but he was terrible today
Lucas was worse and contributed to the team not having any offensive capabilities - Sturridge seemed to be completely throttled by Lucas and Gerrard sitting deep. Lucas and Gerrard both seemed to want to drop deep and didn't split the offensive work between them. It was a mess
Sterling was out wide and wasted for long periods. Seemed to have the only option of beating someone before providing anything, which wasn't always on. It was crying out for him playing central, and when he did, LFC scored. There's so much more to him than being a wide player.
The change in shape made all the difference - we missed Jordan;s energy centrally - though Manquillo might not have had such a good game if he hadn't had that athletic support from him up and down the right.
Lovren looked ok, but ****ing hell - there were a couple of massive brain farts that were really worrying - a bizarre clearance to touch in the first half under no pressure being the worst. Sktrel-esque.
Coutinho - where was he playing? It wasn't at all clear.
I was on the way back from a family wedding so missed watching the game live, but watched it in full when I got home (without knowing the score).
It seemed a really weird game after taking the lead I thought we looked fairly solid, for the first half and a bit of the second half, attacking wise we had been poor with Sturridge and Coutinho anonymous for more or less the whole game (but Sturridge obviously popped up with the winner). Sterling was undoubtedly the best of the front three but also was quieter than he was last season. I really felt we missed that spark of creativity, I think psychologically not having Suarez there makes us easier to play against - in the last couple of seasons the fear of what Suarez could do has worried opposition, today Southampton didn't have the same fear).
After an hour or so something happened defensively and we looked very shaky, maybe this was Southampton growing in confidence and putting us under pressure, but we looked like we did last season. Manquillo I thought looked decent, not great but not a liability he could be a useful player, but it is unclear what his role will be when everyone is available. I thought Johnson was trying to do all the right kind of stuff but his ability to execute what he tries wasn't there.
The midfield was a tough one, personally I thought that they weren't very good, I thought Gerrard wasn't his usual self and although I thought Lucas started well his level dipped in the second half. Henderson was the stand out player in the midfield and the pass for Sterling's goal was fantastic. On paper I felt that that midfield should have dominated the game but it didn't and I thought the midfield were largely responsible for Sturridge and Coutinho not really being in the game, and that has to change. I thought Allen was good when he came on he offered more energy than others had earlier (although that could have been the situation in the game at that point). I think we need to change the midfield before the next game, and I guess Lucas would be the one to miss out, although I'm not sure who might come in for him.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
