3 points! Sturridge and Coutinho weren't at their best today which is huge. Thought Allen gave us bit more energy when he came on but wouldn't have been hard the way Lucas was playing. Lovren did well today . Skrtel was quality, lost count of how many clearances and interceptions he made. Need to sort our full backs out quick smart... Not doing our CB's any favours.

Southampton will do ok this season. Wanyama was outstanding.

Win, 3 points, all that matters. Rack up the points while we fine tune the performances.

3 points but our central midfield got outplayed, same concerns from many of last season's performances.

Lovely job, already 3 points up on last year.

What a save from Ming at the end. He may come and flap a bit here and there, but he's capable of saves that few other keepers would make. For the the second year in a row he is the reason we have 3 points after our first game!

Great that we got the points but that midfield nets sorting out big time.

A win's a win at this stage of the season. We built our team around Suarez and it's going to take a while to develop our new style of play without him. We either need to buy a top class striker and go back to the diamond, or hope that when we add Can, Moreno, Lallana and Markovic into the mix things will start to click.

I thought that Lovren and Manquillo had very assured debuts today, two definite positives against the negatives that Johnson is still badly out of form and the Lucas/Gerrard midfield was woefully short of mobility and energy. Credit to Sterling and Sturridge for taking their chances when it mattered. Otherwise I thought the rest of them were OK, it was struggling to establish a new system that was the issue rather than individual failings.

It is almost comical to me how often Skrtel loses the flight of the ball when it's in the air though. Again at least 4-5 times today he was in a poor position to win the resulting header, though he mostly got away with it. I'd send him for eye tests, he might just be short-sighted, he's fine when it's close up or on the deck.

Yeah Southampton aren't much worse off. I wish we had signed Nathaniel Clyne but Manquillo did well today. Koeman looked to limit the space for Coutinho and that really affected us. He obviously noticed in the Dortmund game how big a threat he was and how our play goes through him. They are a really tough team to beat and we should be proud of that win, especially for the first game of the season.

Quinn spot on there, Skrtel was pathetic on that last chance. Thank **** for the Mig.

Same as last season but there seems to be a perception that our midfield is sorted, I disagree.

3 vital points. Skrtel for that one that hit the bar needs slapping. He lost his man and the ball so easily. Can't wait to get Flanno back much more positive on the ball than the new guy or Johnson. Lucas runs in treacle, he is finished in this league. Without more goal power we will struggle. Let's get at city next. Cobwebs and rust gone.

Was just about to post the same, I'll add he's won us those points with saves he really has no right making.
