12 of the best Jurgen Klopp quotes: Top of the Klopps

Not only is the man a master tactician, a fine upstanding coach and one of football's most intriguing individuals, departing Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp is also an absolute devil with the one-liners.

Given the big news that broke earlier this week, Toe Poke thought we'd pay homage to Klopp's roller-coaster tenure at Dortmund by rounding up 12 of his finest eccentric zingers.

    1. On his slightly less-than-stellar playing days.

"I never succeeded in bringing to the field what was going on in my brain. I had the talent for the fifth division, and the mind for the Bundesliga. The result was a career in the second division."

    2. On the defeat to Bayern Munich in the 2013 Champions League final at Wembley. Klopp remains magnanimous.

"The only thing I can say is that it was great. London is the town of the Olympic Games. The weather was good, everything is OK. Only the result is s---."

Klopp did manage to overhaul Bayern, but it didn't last.
    3. On the prospect of facing Juventus. Klopp was daunted by the tactical perils of facing the Old Lady in the Champions League last 16 earlier this season; Dortmund eventually crashed out 5-1 on aggregate.

"We're facing the greatest challenge there is in football: to play against an Italian team that only needs a draw."

    4. On a poor first-half performance. A half-time team-talk for the ages.

"I told my players during the break: Since we're here anyway, we might actually play a bit of football."

    5. On the crucial difference between himself and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

"He likes having the ball, playing football, passes. It's like an orchestra. But it's a silent song. I like heavy metal."

At Dortmund, Klopp had to suffer losing his best player every year.
    6. On locking horns with Bayern. Klopp succinctly describes the hardships of having to compete against one of the world's biggest footballing conglomerates year upon year.

"We have a bow and arrow and if we aim well, we can hit the target. The problem is that Bayern has a bazooka."

    7. On losing Mario Gotze to Bayern.

"He's leaving because he's Guardiola's favourite. If it's anyone's fault, it's mine. I can't make myself shorter and learn Spanish."

    8. On competing with Bayern again.

"If we should finish second this summer, I'll find a truck and drive it through my garden. If nobody will rejoice, I'll do it alone."

    9. On how it felt to finally overturn the big boys following a 3-1 win over Bayern in February 2011.

"When Dortmund last won here 19 years ago, most of my players were still being breast-fed."

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has perhaps not quite worked out as Klopp would have wanted.
    10. On signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan. While you may be forgiven for thinking that Klopp was opting for lyrical abstraction in describing Dortmund's £24 million acquisition of Mkhitaryan, this is apparently a fairly common working-class German colloquialism -- the slightly less crude English equivalent being "fits like a glove."

"Mkhitaryan fits us like an arse on a bucket. What he offers is exactly what we need."

    11. On Mats Hummels being linked with a summer move to Manchester United in July 2014.

"If that's not a bulls--- story, I'll eat a broomstick!"

    12. On Hummels again, this time lamenting his centre-back's multiple lengthy injury woes.

"We will wait for him like a good wife waiting for her husband who is in jail."
Bob Paisley - "This club has been my life. I'd go out and sweep the street and be proud to do it for Liverpool if they asked me to."

No, I think we'll get Klopp but I worry that we should be concentrating our fire on Ancellotti instead.

Ancelloti is too old for LFC now imo, he's having ops and planning his retirement.

If it works with Klopp, it will be ****in awesome!

I know, but I think a year or two with him would get our house in order and set it up nicely for the next bloke.

I can't help feeling that with Klopp it will be more of a revolution and that when it ends (as these things always do) we'll be pretty much back to where we are now.

Not sure if he has the hunger or passion for a job as big/difficult as this, not denying his credentials or calibre as a manager.

I'm going to be genuinely upset if we don't get him
I saw a dead fish on the pavement and thought "what did you expect?"

Me too, I just think this is *it*. He'll be just what we need.
                    * The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

Seems such a good fit for the club.

Hmm, maybe, but the owners shouldn't let something like that happen again tbh, whoever is manager and for however long we have to keep a strong sqaud consistently topped up, that's if we are serious about challenging for major honours on a regular basis, because our rivals are many now, and wealthy.

If it's to be a Klopp revolution, so be it, if it takes us to a peak all well and good i say, then it's up to all concerned to manage it from there, one things for sure is it will make us more attractive all round, as a club to play for, as a club to buy, all of that stuff can come with success over the short term, we are set for success because of our past, especially with the better ownership we now have, all we need.....one small detail.... is that success, then we can really push on.

Yeah same here, his cv is solid gold, as is the man from what i know of him, which is just what i see with my own eyes.

So Klopp. I have no idea why he's rated so highly and why we as fans would unanimously want him here apart maybe from his character and passion. Apart from Dortmund, he hasn't been really successful before? I know nothing of his former career. He might well have ridden a crest of a wave with exceptional players at a specific period of time with Dortmund, which ultimately petered out last year.

Surely, out of that list, Ancelotti IS the most qualified candidate, by a ****ing country mile.
                          Are we winning?

                            Is this a joke post?

He has managed two clubs - one he got promoted to the Bundesiga for the first time (Mainz 05) the other was a slumbering giant which won two titles and reached a CL final.

I think people rightly point out that dortmund are at lot more similar to us than the clubs ancelotti has been successful with. We aren't a ready made European giant and he doesn't have a track record with such clubs. And he's dull as **** whereas Klopp is a loveable mentalist

It's not a joke. He had very good players at Dortmund. Did he build that team from the ground up?
