I know. I was referring to the formation Mike posted above me.

Full backs provide width, worked well enough in 2013/14. I'm sceptical about the value of out and out wingers in the modern game.

wingers in the traditional sense might be a blast from the past but i think they are still relevant if the manager uses them to ensure they make more of a contribution.

if the only width comes from the full backs then we can be left over exposed and too susceptible to a quick counter...
i would much prefer us be able to win 1-0 than have to score 3 because we are also likely to concede 2. we just are not that free scoring team anymore...

if the wingers [whoever they are] were to add to the pressing game by coming inside more we can easily mob the opposition. they can go wide to give us the option of taking the ball to the line and cutting it back or lifting it into the area and the variation will make it harder for defences to close us out. having a bit more width at the front also helps prevent the opposition full backs having time on the ball to play out and also helps to cut out the ability to play to the full backs when the centre backs are closed down.
the winger from the far side and be on the edge of the goal area [or ten yards further out] to collect cleared balls and quickly put the pressure back on.

        we can set up like

        mig
        clyne - skrtel - sakho - moreno
        lucas
        milner - can - lallana
        coutinho
        striker
removing all the weak links makes us stronger

too many gutless players, no beef or desire. pussies everywhere... sack them all.

Nothing much wrong with that formation other than the nagging feeling we'd be better with two up top, Milner and Lallana are not wingers of course. Its a role they can fulfil but that's all, better described as utility widemen.

They provide width in possession but they're not going to be the ones pressing higher up the field, which is what I was talking about. We didn't press in 13/14 the way we will under Klopp.

They don't need to be out-and-out wingers - utility wide men is a fine way to describe them, Mkhitaryan often played wide under Klopp - but if the shape doesn't have any wide midfielders at all, not even tucked in like Coutinho/Lallana were on Saturday, you're asking the centre mids to cover the flanks in addition to their responsibilities in the middle. In this system that's a pretty big task, one for the Milners and Hendersons and Cans of the world, and I'm not sure Coutinho's suited to it. If playing two strikers takes away from the pressing game (and who knows if it really will, but I think bringing in Benteke for Can is a net loss in energy) then I'm not sure it's going to be a default, or that we'll actually be better for it.

I like the side Baitman posted and I think it'd function pretty well.

I think baitman's formation looks good too. It's compact and tight and you can see Ibe really killing it on the left, where he has the option to go wide and beat a man or cut into the centre for a shot.

dont really see them anymore since most teams dont play 442, but there is the rise of the wide forward who as well as providing some width also has to chip in with plenty of goals in a 433 - like walcott, winfried zaha, robben, ribery.

the formation in vogue currently is probably the 4231 which doesnt allow for wingers, but inside forwards / creative players like silva / coutinho / ozil.

Im sure it will all change in another 5 years or so or until guardiola launches the next iteration of man city.

                      Stolen from elsewhere

Distance is one thing but its the sprints that catches my eye from a low of less than 400 against Stoke to over 600 against Spurs.

Carra impressed already by our change in style. Neville trying his best to pour cold water on us.

Hmm. That was interesting cheers. Some good points from both Carra and Neville to b fair. Quite a response from the players based on those stats though.

Speed of thought and speed of action working together are going to be key to getting the side being effective and tonight showed how much work is to be done (and why Sturridge is so missed). Players have to be constantly switched on to a pass to receive and to make so its a constant progression of moves like dare I say it Evans side when McMannaman, Barnes and Redknapp would turn opposing sides inside out and outside in again moving the ball forward at speed.

Tonight you could see the deficit as the obvious pass and move chance was spurned by taking too long to "see" the chance in the first instance.
