How does a right winger get himself a track record?

Maybe by putting in crosses? Pennant put the most crosses in last season and before anyone says 'any fool can cross a ball' it's not just the crossing, it's the runs, the vision and the skill to find space to get your cross in.

Personally, for a right winger, i think he has got a track record.
AI i think the word that is important here is Greatin terms of track record. I hope that he develops a great track record. The preception of Pennant has always been one of unfulfilled talent, I think he can do it here if he puts the effort in.

I agree in part - he's fantastic there and should remain an option for us this season on the right side of midfield - but in the main he's likely to be playing in his favoured central role. Last season Gerrard simply upped his level - imagine the havoc he'll be able to cause given a roving, attacking & central role?
We're a better team when Gerrard, Alonso, & Sissoko are in it.

Shoe'ing Pennant into the side, to the detriment of playing the three above, solely so we could have a bona fide rightwinger in the side, would do us NO favours at all.

Pennant's an option. Gerrard, Alonso and Sissoko are musts.

Again I agree but Gerrard, Alonso and Sissoko won't play every single game. Also Rafa will often go with one up front; Xabi, Momo and Stevie in the middle, Pennant on the right, whoever on the left and a striker.

Pennant's signing gives us so many more possibilities.

OK, but how does he get a great track record as a right winger? Just interested in how people judge the track record of wingers

totally agree, Gerrard Alonso and Momo are a formidable trio in midfield. I think we'll see a lot of 3 at the back or 1 up front this season, but at least Xabi, Stevie and Momo will be able to have a rest this season.

Rather than one up front - i'd like to see the aforementioned in midfield with Gerrard supporting the striker and given his energy and versatility equally provide extra support for the back four when periods of play demand it.

I think it was a must to get a dedicated Right Winger in the squad rather than just right midfielders as it gives us another dimension - particularly against stodgy teams where added width is a heaven send.

Agree with Ryan on the points that we need another goal scorer + Pennants fee was over the top. But i prefer paying over the odds as opposed to last season were we missed out on adding to the squad in key areas.

                Apologies subliminal typing.

Consistently geeting past men and the privision of good quality crossses that lead to goals ultimately. There are intangibles that contribute to a great track record - the fear factor is one, this comes with that abaility to get past players and put the ball into the danger area.

Pennant IMO has this ability but it hasn't been fully drawn out, I hope it will be at LFC.

Are you going for 3 at the back then rob? That's my preference too

                      A little advice to you:
                      talk about football and LFC.
                      thank you.

Well i think we can given the quality we have there. But i was referring to a back four ...

Having a back four provides cover for the wide players and given these players are not the best at tracking back - full backs are a must for teams that play 4-4-2 IMO.

I'm looking forward to this season, and i'm a pessimist!

As for Pennant; Well I've made my stance on this very clear for ages now. I didn't want him, we vastly overpaid for him, I didn't think we needed him, and I don't particularly rate him.

That enough for you to get off my leg for a while?
if you've seen him a dozen times, then you would have seen his many sterling performances for Real Sociedad. in that context, I dont know how you can say he has zero product

He scored a few goals for some rubbish Spanish outfit.

Smicer and Cheyrou showed similar 'promise' in France, and came to LFC with high hopes too.

did you see those games as part of your claim that you've seen him a dozen times? if so, how can you not be impressed? particularly his performance against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu

during that game, he worked hard for 90 minutes and ended up scoring an equaliser earning a valueable point for his team. hardly 'zero end product' eh?
