I had to check who the players were but I remembered the “oh f*ck” moment when I saw what Cantona had done to them. They’d gone close to winning the title the previous year but Leeds pipped them. They were top or thereabouts but not playing especially well. Then he joined them and the rest is horrible horrible history.

Apologies in advance for the reference as most of us have repressed the memories but in the 92/93 season united had Hughes and McClair up front, Robson and Phelan behind them, Giggs and Sharp or Kanchelskis on the wings. They were going well in the league but were nothing special. They were functional. Then they signed Cantona in November 92 and won the league by 10 points. He knitted their play together and took them up several levels as a team. I've got a feeling that Wirtz is going to have a similar impact on us. I think he's going to link up play in a way that lifts the whole team to new heights.

Have a feeling you will be proven right. Fully expect Wirtz, once he is settled in, to have as much impact on how our attack works as Alisson and VVD did for our defence.
