    European Super League

Just thought i'd throw this one open for general discussion -

Heard on the radio think it was talk sport this afternoon, a discussion on a super league with clubs from england, france, germany etc taking part and being taken out of the league ie - Liverpool, Chelsea, Man Utd and possibly one other (arsenal) wouldnt play in the premiership and there would be relegation and promotion

The example given was that if liverpool were the lowest placed English team then they would play the winner of the premier league and the winner plays in the super league and the other goes into the premier league

any thoughts on this - would it work or what???

personally - i think it would be a bad idea as it would take the competitive nature out of the premiership - could fans afford to travel to europe three times a month for games every month for a season???

im not sure its a good idea but thats my view

    Discuss??

First attempt at getting a good dicussion going on a chat forum like this so hope its a good un

Mods - if this is in the wrong place - can you put in the right please!!!!

Nah I can't be having a Euro Super League, the only reason it would exist would be to make money, and I do think it will happen one day. It will be a sad day for football when it does.

We already have a European Superleague - it's called the Champions League and every effort is made to ensure that the same teams turn up (and win it) year after year.

Fans will not allow important domestic rivalries and competitions to be done away with entirely.

      Will never happen.

I think it's a bad idea. I like the current balance between Eueopean ties and domestic fixtures. The only change I'd happily consider is reducing the number of EPL teams from 20 to 18 or 17 and...more controversially...giving teams playing in Europe the option to opt out of the Milk Cup, or whatever it's called now.

Its not really a league though is it?

I hope it doesnt happen but for financial reasons it probably will, and the derbies will be called English derbies rather than local derbies

A no-starter for me, just another money-orientated idea with little consideration for fans and the state of domestic leagues.

Anyone remember Wenger early last year saying that the top 4 teams in all European leagues should be guaranteed a place in the CL every year? Disregarding the fact that the money the CL pays out more or less insures this happens anyway, he doesn't seem to care that this would make the Premier league even less competitive than it currently is.

i agree that the league is a bad idea - i think it would take some of the edge of games and to be fair - there would be no merseyside derby in a competitive league!!games would become meaningless in the premeirship and it would be constantly the same teams with the same players competing in the super league - again as scully says a 'money-oriented idea'

just the cost of getting to the game swould be high. plus getting time off work to get to midweek games

The second group stage of the Champions League was scrapped as it was too boring.

pie in the sky. The reason the Championsleague does so well is that people look forward to these games while playing domestically. Boredom would soon set in. As a fan you enjoy going to games where you expect to win, smaller grounds etc. Where is the fun in playing a big team every week>?

If it ever did happen there wouldn't be promotion and relegation. The G14 clubs would just pull away and operate like the NFL. Logistically it would be good for all concerned as the NFL is the best and fairest organised competitive league in the world, but in the context of European football and the fans it would be a disaster.
