Andy Murray is considering dropping down a level to further his singles comeback after suffering a first-round defeat at the Winston-Salem Open. The former world No 1 went down 7-6 (8), 7-5 to the American Tennys Sandgren in a promising display in just his second singles match back since career-saving hip surgery in January.

Murray has already confirmed he will not play in the US Open, which starts in New York next week, and will now ponder the possibility of playing some games at the Challenger level - one below the ATP Tour - to get as many matches as he can.

Among several other tournaments it means he could play at the Murray Trophy – a new addition to the calendar, named after the Scot and his brother Jamie. It runs in Glasgow between 16 and 22 September, a week before Murray is due in Asia to resume his ATP Tour schedule.

“I’m quite aware of sort of where I’m at just now and what my level is,” he told the ATP Tour website. “It’s competitive at this level but it needs to be better. Maybe I need play a level down to get some matches and build my game up a little bit before I start playing on the Tour again.”

Despite suffering another defeat, Murray was much improved from his comeback loss to Richard Gasquet in Cincinnati so took the positives, which included feeling no pain in his hip after a gruelling match.

“Some things were a bit better today I think,” he added. “I was hitting the ball a bit cleaner than I did maybe in Cincinnati... I feel like I moved fairly well to some drop shots, which maybe last week I wasn’t running to. So there’s some good things in there but also some stuff I would like to do better. Physically, [I feel] OK considering, no pain, no discomfort. Just a little bit more tired than usual.”

He is playing the Nadal open this week. He just needs to play more to find his rhythm and see what happens.

It’s going to be a long, long road back after so long out. If he can ever make it.

If he does though, it is going to be epic

Jo Konta through to the 1/4’s of the US Open.

Held her nerve at the end

If you look further down the thread there is a bit of context :D seems he didn't make himself well liked to the crowd through the tournament, angrily snatching away a towel from ball boy, lobbing his racket, flipping the bird to the audience :haha:

They seem to have warmed to him by the end though...

Buzzo 25-09-19 02:28 PM

Andy won his first ATP match yesterday beating world no 69 Tennys Sandgren.

I saw a bit of it, he looked very fit. Served well, and moved around the court unbelievably well. There were some signs of rust, in shot making and decisions but lots to be encouraged by.

He was understandably delighted.

Shaggy 25-09-19 02:35 PM

Thank you to our Scottish correspondent Buzzo there.

Now back to Buzzo for the latest on Andy Robertson and Supergran! :haha::rock::D

He lost to him a few weeks back didn't he? Good result anyway. Great to see him away from that fucking satellite tour shite.

:haha:

I always like to ensure everyone on EST knows what’s happening up here

That’s right, he did lose to Sandgren recently apparently.

I am really intrigued to see how Andy goes (if you hadn’t realised). There were points yesterday where he was running everything down and really frustrating.

His misses were all shot a into the net, and a bit of a lack of sharpeness. Does he have enough to climb top 20 and above???

I hope so.

If he can get a march on and time it as Novak, Rafa and Roger all hit injury worries he could surely bag a couple of slams????

I’m a wild optimist sports wise. That’s the dream for me.

Right, best post the Andy Robbo clip I just found :haha:

Shaggy 25-09-19 02:46 PM

:haha::haha::haha:

One more Slam for Murray would be amazing, tear-jerking stuff. I just can't see him getting close.

Yeah, a real heart v head one for me.

Heart why not? Head no chance.

It would be the ultimate Phoenix from the flames story and that’s his career all over, against all odds.

And it would be unbelievably emotional :handshake:

Buzzo 26-09-19 06:22 PM

Andy lost today.

Watched bits. Played well and had chances, but not quite enough. 6-4, 2-6, 4-6 Broken at 4-4 in third set. Fought hard but couldn’t turn it round. He’s getting better but a long way to go.

The Aus Open will be a real indication of where he is, the likelihood of him meeting a big seed early on is pretty high.

Buzzo 01-10-19 09:12 AM

Big win against World no 13

Andy Murray impressively beat Matteo Berrettini 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (9-7) at the China Open to set up a second round tie against fellow Briton Cameron Norrie.

Shaggy 01-10-19 09:17 AM

He reached the US Open semis didn't he. Great win that.

Shaggy 02-10-19 09:37 AM

Beats that Brit Norrie in 3 sets. Bit worrying he seemed to make fairly heavy weather of beating some British chump :haha: although he cruised the third set. First time he won 2 on the spin since he came back.

:handshake:

Good win, but yeah doesn’t seem able to fully impose his game on other players.

All the ATP tours are on Amazon Prine so watched a bit this nornkbg.

He’s getting better though

Shaggy 04-10-19 12:36 PM

Beaten in straight sets by Thiem. No surprise. :sigh:

captainfog 04-10-19 12:40 PM

He's done. I just can't see a way back for him from here. His game just isn't good enough any more. If he want's to keep playing he should stick to doubles because if this continues much longer it could tarnish what's been a magnificent career.

Shaggy 08-10-19 05:58 PM

Lost in the 2nd round again. Lost to that Fognini, who is decent. But :sigh:

Buzzo 20-10-19 07:09 PM

Andy beat Wawrinka (World no 18) in Antwerp ATP Final. 961 days since his last.

Yeah, didn't see the game or follow it, but this must have been a crazy effort.

I had a nightmare during the game, the in laws decided to visit, :sigh: they said Murray broke down after the game.

Buzzo 20-10-19 08:57 PM

Yep. What a moment.

From perhaps thinking we’d never see hi on court again to this.

Recalibrate expectations.

Shaggy 20-10-19 09:11 PM

That is beautiful.

Liverpool 20-10-19 09:45 PM

remember the retirement montage they showed at his last grand slam and all the farewell speeches by other pros :haha:

Buzzo 21-10-19 09:05 AM

:handshake:

He will be a real wildcard in the draw 12 months after having been retired by the Aus Open.

I’m afraid so.

Buzzo 30-11-19 01:07 AM

Watched it.

I think I wept at least 5 times :haha:

He is an inspiration. And honestly, they include some audio where he explains what tennis means to him which is among the most enlightening and heart breaking things I have ever listened to.

It is also not for the faint hearted. You get to see bits of Andy Murray you would never imagine you could see (graphic surgery).

Consider that he was World Number 1 when this injury took him down. Wimbledon Champion. As he went down he was even managing to beat highly ranked players on one leg. Injury has easily cost him at least one other Slam. He has been out for 2 entire years.

If he can get another shot at a Slam or 2 it will be the most amazing thing ever. EVER.

I certainly wouldn't bet against him.

Shaggy 30-11-19 01:15 AM

:haha::haha::haha::D:handshake:

Gonna have to borrow my gf's Prime log in and get this fucker watched. :D

Buzzo 30-11-19 01:24 AM

Do it man

He is the ultimate underdog. Everything about him appeals to me.

It's the same in football (or any sport I follow a team I suppose). It needs to mean something more. It wouldn't mean as much if it felt easy.

I'd give anything to see Andy Murray have one more shot in a final of a slam. Coming back from being retired by the tour would be the most Andy Murray thing ever.

(and congrats on having a new missus btw )

Shaggy 30-11-19 01:30 AM

:haha::D

I love him nearly as much as you do. :D

And thanks, early days, but y'know.
