Random sport happenings

Just saw this extraordinary bowl and thought it was worth sharing in a catch-all sports thread -

Love a bit of lawn bowls, me and the lad play regular. We're both crap but :D

SB 01-02-20 04:15 AM

Yeah I have the occasional roll up with my Mum. Her & Dad used to play a lot when he was still alive so I play with her as a mark of respect to them both. My bowling isn’t a mark of respect to anybody mind you.

There's just something about it. Bare feet on the grass. Beer in hand. Sunshine. Peace. It's a rare moment of tranquility in urban suburbia. It transports you to a different time and place where things were slower.

The one we go to had an apartment tower built between it and the road. Sounds awful but it's a very busy road and it isolates it from the noise increasing the sense of peace.

Over here it's snotty and full of rituals and rules. Unsurprisingly

Played a lot of lawn bowls last year. Since old age (well, maybe coming of age) has started setting in over the last few years my mates and I often have beers at bowls clubs as they generally offer cheap beverages and there is little temptation for the married lads. It's not like 75 year old Doris is turning any heads. Footballers can still play 5 a side, but the rugby, cricket and boxing etc gets tricky due to tax on body and time dedication. After several years of drinking, one of us started playing with the geriatric fucks there and somehow triggered a domino effect with the rest of us.

The thought of it doesn't interest me, but the competitive element of close games are ridiculous, games can get really tense and sometimes even borderline aggressive. Little can come close to the frustration of having a winning bowl smashed out of the way when you were on the verge of victory. I've played on several greens now and there's a huge disparity between winter and summer greens which has thrown me as a beginner.

I bought some shitty second hand bowls, but was shocked at the price of a reasonable set. So probably won't be getting too into it for at least the next few decades. Definitely a better drinking activity than the likes of pool, darts etc. Although some clubs are very particular about drinking on greens.

Nothing but the contrary here, they love seeing people on the other side of the half century showing bowls any interest. Old people giving their pearls of wisdom can be tedious, had so much contradicting information thrown at me. The 'when you get to the mat, stay low and take your time' is probably the best advice I've received.

So, 'the (closet) lawn bowls thread' then :D

We had a few family holidays in a small coastal beach town & every afternoon we’d meet down at the bowls club for a roll up, beers & lots of laughs. Plenty of good memories in those times with my mum n dad plus my family.

Nah, Coorparoo in the 'burbs. I was living there for a while but moved closer to the lads school.

:handshake: I wasn’t sure if you’d decided to move down to Gods country mate. Same thing happened with the MB bowls club as they had a fair wad of unused land & cashed in to a developer.

I couldn't cope so far away from the City, I'm too used to it. I'm about 15k away and consider that too far, used to be able to walk in when the mood struck me.

City’s mean traffic & noise & I prefer personal space & the beach. :handshake:

In saying that I loved visiting Hanoi last year & I found being amongst the population of 9m invigorating & exciting but I wouldn’t live there.

Can ya do this yet? Can ya? CAN YA???

I was courted by a local bowls club master or whatever to get the lads in our school to start playing bowls. Picked up from school by a retired policeman, shown around the clubhouse, got to throw a few bowls. I think I can see the appeal. I never did anything about it, though, so now it just seems like a really weird day I had in work.

:haha:

Feels like it might be something to do stoned with some tunes. Or maybe on acid.

I'm picking up on the vibe perfectly right? :handshake:

Some places over here do glow bowls, which is night time bowling with tunes and fluro bowls. Would be perfect :)

It's hard to think of a sport that wouldn't be improved by acid. For the spectator. Dunno about F1 or UFC for the participants :pop:

I'd subscribe to all of them. :handshake:

We played football at a house party on acid when I was at college. It was fucking nuts.

F1 on acid :haha:

Wimbledon on acid would be amazing. Though with all of them I'd settle in for the three hour wait as the participants make their way onto court.

Any track and field on acid would be very watchable.

Zapater 16-02-20 08:25 PM

Never played on acid, but we've had mushrooms and rolled a couple times which is a laugh. The main source of amusement is communicating with the other bowlers. My friends always smoke before playing, although I don't enjoy cannabis, so I don't partake.

Played on Friday afternoon, haven't played for some time so was a bit rusty, but good to get back out onto the green.
