Southgate with a flurry from 'Brendan's Big Book of Wonderful Complements'Originally posted by Shaggy View PostA lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.

To be fair to Henderson, he was on his own in midfield for almost the entire competition, he had a decent one all in all, but in truth England got away with a hell of a lot in games prior to last night, when the midfield was exposed for what it is once Croatia grabbed hold of the game.
For all the praise that Southgate has received this summer, I think in the cold light of day, his setup and personnel selection in midfield needs to be questioned if England are to move on from the limitations that led to their exit.
Once the game is lost through the middle, you'll always struggle, which is something that the proficiency from set-pieces against muck had covered up for a lot of observers and feel-good pundits.
Henderson has been more or less shattered after every game trying to plug holes as best he could."I will make the boys feel your support"

I don't rate Southgate. Gave him the benefit of the doubt but his love for a half fit or just plain knackered Dele Alli was baffling. Gareth is young and intelligent so may learn from it but we'll have to wait and see. I said that once we get past Sweden his tactics will be found out, i.e. defend deep to nullify Sterling and stop Henderson. Job done.
I also agree with the comment above that Modric ran that game despite being on empty. Really was a world class performance. Can Hendo do the same now with Keita and Fabinho next to him?One tit for another.

Took a poor team and got them well organised, with set-piece routines that got them to the semis. Done alright I'd say, as although they were abject in terms of creativity, that's in large part due to having muck players to choose from.Originally posted by BigChief View PostI don't rate Southgate.Like blood on iron

I dont think Henderson and Modric were playing similar roles at all.
Modric is one of the most skilful midfielders about, and had almost a free role in midfield. Henderson had to be tactically disciplined being the 'pivot' between defence and attack, knowing that the other midfielders are very attack minded (in theory).Modifying post.

He also had an issue that the viable creative options - Wilshere and Lallana had injury issues. I thought his selection was clear headed and sensible, which is something few of his predecessors have managed.Originally posted by Red_Polo View PostTook a poor team and got them well organised, with set-piece routines that got them to the semis. I thought that he should have changed tactics for the semi-final as Henderson was alone in the midield and overrun, could have done with some help in there sacrificing one of Alli, Lingard or Sterling.
That said Southgate's record in this world cup puts him on par with Bobby Robson as England's 2nd most successful manager. This is a young squad, he needs to show that this wasn't a one off by building on this at the EurosThe only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
