What’s our best team and formation at the moment? Assuming Shaqiri deserves to start, the front three are (probably) ‘undroppable’ and the back five picks itself, that leaves two midfield positions.

I'd go:
Allison
TAA
Gomez
VVD
Robertson
Wijnaldum
Milner
Shaqiri
Salah
Firmino
Mane

I'd say Milner's place is the one in there up for grabs, but based on form over the season so far he deserves to be in there, everyone else's form in midfield has been patchy

Based on current form, I's also go with that team i.e. Wijnaldum and Milner in midfield (but I'd be unsure of the formation... balance of the team). Crazy to think that would leave Keita, Fabinho (combined cost of c£100m) and Henderson fighting for bench places.

I think we'll see more of Keita soon, I have a feeling he'll improve and get some game time now if he's over his niggles.

Hopefully Mane's mental state is ok, was heart wrenching seeing the footage of him being subbed off in tears...got me thinking there has to be more going on than just getting booed by your own fans. Altho Mane does seem to wear his heart on his sleeve, so who knows??

From what I read (didn't see the game, just some of the reports on Mane) he missed an easy chance early doors and the crowd turned on him, started to boo his every touch...and this match was at home, so that's a lot of fans on your back.

13 shots on goal in 782 mins of football with Wijnaldum-Henderson-Milner in midfield.

Less than a shot and a half per game.

Klopps's next headache, Sort the midfield out !!

Liverpool have conceded just five goals in their first 14 Premier League games this season; only Chelsea in 2008-09 conceded fewer at this stage in a PL campaign (4 goals).

...from the BBC

After the burnley game there was some discussion about the resting of key players.
I didnt think that the "resting" was worth it as we might well go behind and then are struggling to recover and win and with being in such a great position and within touching distance of city we cannot afford to let any points slip.

Then i read this post in the Burnley thread and it got me thinking abut how the "resting" of the key players may actually be more about protection and saving them for the latter stages of a game...

Contain teams for 60-70 mins, bring on the big guns to finish them off. Makes more sense to do that even at risk of dropping a few points than play them non stop until one of them gets injured and the we lose their impact for weeks.

You could argue just rest one at a time, but the impact of bringing both (or all 3) against tired legs, as well as the mental boost to the rest of our players, should be plenty to get goals in the final 20 mins.
As long as we are still in the game at that point...
I can see how this can be a viable tactic...
Not so much for resting our A team players, but more for protecting them from yard dog teams for 60+ minutes and then bringing them on to unleash hell and stretch the game for the remaining minutes.
All providing we have managed to keep things tight at the back and we are still in the game.

It a absolutely makes sense and has been tried and tested, but for one, maybe two attacking players.

There was a discussion about strength in depth spread around several of the threads but i dont know which or where to post so this is probably the best place.

We might have the numbers in the squad but we certainly dont have the strength or depth...
Four first team ready centre backs, and only VVD is Mr Reliabe.
Matip is injured and unavailable if the humidity is abve 75%.
Gomez picked up an unfortunate injury as he was covering at right back, whch was ok as we had lots of CB cover... then we loan out our experienced right back cover when gmez is injured ???
Now lovren has a hamstring injury, so we are back to just one recognised CB.
Fabinho will be able to cover, but then nicking a decent midfielder to shore up the defence then leaves the midfield paper thin.
Milner can cover at right back and left back but he doesnt have the legs to sustain our wing play and help our push for a title.

Yeah I don't really like the robbing Peter to pay Paul patch up jobs of moving Fabinho to cover at CB. Without him in there we are likely looking at a 3 of Milner Henderson and Wijnaldum which doesn't work. Keita is still struggling to adapt and Lallana isn't good enough. It feels like we are in a tough spot at the moment. Actually hopefully we can go Henderson, Wijnaldum Shaqiri in midfield.

No cover at CB limited midfield options and only Sturridge and Origi as cover up front. It feels like we need to sign someone in the window again.

Its paper thin and if we have any the A team out we might see our challenge stutter and stall.
Its no good saying we have the cover, but too often much of that cover is unreliable due to fitness or durability issues, or the ones that are fit and available are a massve drop in standard.

Squad looks decent on paper but out defenders are dropping like flies we are having to patch up CB with midfielders, Moreno is a liability, Keita hasn't settled, Milner has been rushed back , Lallana doesn't suit us any more. Sturridge only really works against tired defences and Origi is something of an enigma.
On the pitch the squad doesn't look great
