Thought he was brilliant in the second half, after a decent first half and although he likes taking shots on our goal... there wasn't much he could do with that own goal. He just needs games into him and a good spell without injury. He was aggressive last night, was great to see.

I do like the way he's progressive and pushes out, it's essential sometimes although his control is for shit & scares the life out of me. Go by one player and pass it Joel yeah great, not by 5!

Very good performance and tonight showed the aggression that makes a man of his size a difficult prospect to play against.

Agree, he might even have some suitors come the summer, hope he stays though, I like him and he ticks most boxes. He might even get better over the next two or three seasons.

Fair fucks to the lad. Scores an own goal, and could've faltered, but stood up to the occasion, and cracked on like nothing had happened.

I've always had him ahead of Lovren but with his long list of injuries i've become fed up with him. Amazed he's lasted this long tbh and thankfully he has, now Lovren is nearing a comeback i wouldn't be surprised if he crocks again but until then...

This isn't a dig at Matip (he's proved to be a good player) but Virgil van Dijk makes any centre back partner look world class

Vvd plus any one from three (matip, lovren or gomez) looks great.

But if virge was out then who could we really trust. Scary shit...

I thought the first leg against Bayern demonstrated that we could trust Matip and Fabinho?

Good point, forgot about fab painting over the cracks for us

Not that we want him anywhere else but in our midfield.

Gets unfair criticism because he just looks a bit ungainly.

One of these days one of his mazy runs forward is going to result in a goal.

I wouldn't say I'm a fan of those runs which seem to end in him losing the ball everytime but it is progressive if he just passed it after going by the 4th man! It's good to push out from defence like that to a point.

He has been more aggressive which is the thing we all wanted. He was caught a few times vs Chelsea but he had a good game. Once he keeps fit he can be a good asset to us. One thing I would say is that I expected him to score more headers, huge guy and needs to pose a Vvd threat.

Another quality performance from Matip. Absolutely dominant at the back, and bringing the ball out too.

Yeah I wonder if this is the longest uninjured run he’s had with us? Certainly is with VVD as his partner. He’s been quality this season no doubt about it.

This is the Matip we bought from Germany. No wonder he was voted for a best player award.

From the BBC

Liverpool are unbeaten in the 21 Premier League games when Matip has played this season, averaging only 0.7 goals conceded per game in this period.

This is not a critisism of Matip but it's a fairly meaningless stat to be honest. We have only lost 1 PL game all season and we have conceded 20 goals in 34 games (which if my maths is correct is an average of about 0.6 goals per game). So we perform about the same whether Matip has played or not. The only this it shows for me is the consistency of our defence. As I say this is not a criticism of Matip he has clearly played his part, just shows that there are alot of pointless stats out there.

I don't think it's meaningless, it shows that he can be trusted to be a part of the defence, not a liability.

Do you think having Moreno in would maintain our excellent defensive stats?

Yeah was going to type the same reply. He was accused of being unreliable in the past so this stat blows that away in my opinion.

It only shows that because I have added a context, without the context it tells you nothing. You are not sure whether they are saying this is good, bad or indifferent, whether they are comparing Matip to other LFC defenders or the LFC defence to other teams. If that is the point that they want to make fine but the context is essential and make the point.

I think it just demonstrates that you could put Djimi in our defence and he'd look good next to VvD. To be fair, Matip, Lovren and Gomez are all good defenders, but none of them are leaders/organisers in the same way. VvD and a less attacking style of play / more defensive mid have made the difference this season.

That video missed the glorious long pass to Salah that Crooks thought was made by VVD.
