Mohamed Salah could miss Liverpool pre-season as Egypt unveil Olympics plan

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah is set to be called into Egypt's Tokyo 2020 Olympic squad, their manager has confirmed.

Whilst the Olympic tournament is contested by Under-23 sides, they are able to call-up three senior players.

Egypt manager Shawky Gharib has confirmed they have settled on Salah as one of those they plan to pick.

His involvement would cause him to miss Liverpool's pre-season ahead of the 2020/21 season.

But Gharib confirmed he has yet to speak to Salah about the plans, which leaves him facing a choice between club and country.

Speaking to ON Sport, Gharib said: “Out of the three senior players we’ll call-up, Salah is the only one we’re settled on so far because he’s simply one of the top three players in the world.

“I haven’t talked to Salah at all about him joining the U-23 squad for the Olympics, but in all honesty, his participation in the Olympics will need a little effort from him as well.”

When the prospect of Egypt handing Salah a call-up was discussed in January, Jurgen Klopp addressed the issue and admitted he may have to do without Salah.

The Liverpool manager said: "The Olympics is a wonderful thing but it would not be too cool,”

"No decision has been made yet. What I have to say I will say it to Mo, so that is all. Neither side has made a decision.

"I wish we could have whole squad together for pre-season but that is not possible for different reasons."

Speaking about the situation last month, Gharib confirmed a call-up would be in Salah's hands.

The superstar was critical of the Egypt set-up after their African Cup of Nations disappointment last summer and could yet reject a chance to bolster their Olympic bid.

Gharib said: "We have to send a preliminary list of 50 players. Salah will be the first on the list as an official call-up.

"Salah's participation in the Tokyo Olympics is in his hands, but there are other factors that may affect his decision. The Olympic football tournament will be held from 23 July to 8 August, which is the same time Liverpool will be preparing for the new season."

The Reds are planning a change in their pre-season plans after spending the last three years in the United States.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Reds chiefs have discussed flying to Asia in July, with their new kit manufacturers, Nike, keen to capitalise on the addition of the Reds to their portfolio by encouraging them to grow their fanbase in the Far East .

It's not that bad is it? He'll be getting his fitness and playing games, like he would with us.

Our games would be friendlies though. Olympics will be people playing for medals. So not only will the manager play him as much as possible, but other players will be a little eager in their tackles to stop him to win said medals.

And it won't be under any control to get fitness back either. Playing to win is a lot different to playing to build fitness and conditioning.

They can fuck right off. Missing pre season for Olympics in July/August and then away again for AFCON in January? And he already missed most of this pre season for AFCON last summer. Fuck. Off.

It's like no one's heard of this thing called Covic-19. Not the olympics and not Nike.

We should tell Mo it’s one or the other but not both competitions that he can play in. We pay his wages & want to defend our our inevitable league win & he should be available as much as possible to do that. It’d be better for us if he pulled out of the AFCON tournament & Sadio did that one & Mo could do the Olympics so we don’t have to play without them both.

Of course I expect none of this to happen but we will hopefully sign Werner & that will offset the loss of both players over Xmas.

The Egyptian FA do worry me. They played him when his shoulder was well and truly fucked and they've used him as a political tool against his will too. Not sure they have his best interests at heart to be honest.

Same for keita too, being played when obviously not fit. These superstars are the money spinners for their nations and are used as pawns.

The change back to 'our' winter for afcon has also pissed klopp off and im sure it will weigh heavily when we consider any other African players.

we do a lot of passing drills in pre-season. And probably that trust exercise where Salah has to fall backwards and Mane catches him.

If it wasn't a problem for Salah, it certainly was for Alisson.

But hey, let's just have players forgo pre season training every year and have them play competively all year round until it becomes a problem for more of them.

a solid pre season with the club is absolutely imperative.

Mo moves to 15 goals, 2 goal behind Vardy and Aubameyang and 1 behind Aguero in the race for the golden boot.

Salah was good today I thought, he kept going and never let his head drop. He turned an absolute dog of a pass from Mane into a goal (whilst I was still cursing the pass) with a smart finish.

That’s Mo on 16 goals now, one behind Vardy and Aubameyang, you wouldn’t rule him out from a third in a row golden boot.

Auba and Vardy have gone quiet again. Salah should be able to nick this if he plays like today.

100 league matches 70 goals. The guy is the most under rated phenomenon we've ever had. Certainly doesn't get the adoration of Torres and Suarez.

Quote:
Fowler, Owen, Torres, Suarez - Liverpool have had more than their fair share of goalscoring heroes in the Premier League, but Mohamed Salah is proving the most prolific yet.

The Reds' 'Egyptian King' marked his 100th top-flight appearance with his 70th league goal for the club in Saturday's 2-1 win over Bournemouth. In their first century of Premier League appearances, only Alan Shearer scored more.

Salah's latest goal - a crisp, low finish from the edge of the penalty area - means he has now found the net more often in his first 100 matches in England than Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, ex-Manchester United forward Ruud van Nistelrooy and former Anfield favourite Fernando Torres.

The 27-year-old's first-half strike lifts him above former Reds forward Luis Suarez as the club's greatest overseas goalscorer of all time, while also making him the first Liverpool player since Michael Owen in 2002-03 to reach 20 goals in all competitions in three successive campaigns.

I thought he was looking up and creating a lot more than he has in recent time.

But then when tasked with making something from nothing, he still delivered.

Excellent today.

It was interesting how wide both Mane and Salah were at times. They were getting the ball with chalk on their boots and the full backs going inside them

Wonder if that was a deliberate plan to unpick the low block ahead of Atletico this week

Definite tactics, parts of the first half we were back to our old selves long diagonals and balls over the top into the channels mixing it up. Last 5 games or so we've been too predictable and slow to release the ball, everything has been short too so allows well drilled teams to setup.

Thought Mo look very sharp and strong, just his decision making and passing let him down a bit. Seems the more time he has to think the worse it is for him.. thrives on natural instinct imo same as Mane.
