Not a good sign.

Tottenham face disruption after coronavirus outbreak in squad

Tottenham's preparations for their pre-Christmas fixtures have been disrupted by a coronavirus outbreak at the club.

It is understood a number of players and club staff have returned positive Covid-19 tests.

More PCR testing is due to take place over the next 24 hours.

Spurs are due to face Rennes in a crucial Europa Conference League group game in London on Thursday before a Premier League trip to Brighton on Sunday.

Under Uefa regulations, if they have 13 available players, including a goalkeeper, from their 25-man A list, they must fulfil the Rennes fixture, which they need to win to stand a chance of qualifying for the final 32.

The game could be postponed if they do not have sufficient player numbers but all group matches must be completed by 31 December.

It is yet to be established whether the club will contact the Premier League about Sunday's game at the Amex Stadium, but a decision to postpone league matches can only be made by the competition board.

"a crucial Europa Conference League group game"

Would be surprised if it's an intentional ploy to avoid having to play the fixture and get kicked out.

I want to see them out for the comedy value but also because they're crap so having no midweek distraction won't make a difference. I'd rather have them out and not earning coefficient points for future CL campaigns.

Remember the timely 'COVID outbreak' in the Citeh squad during the busy December period last season.

Qatar can just go fuck off for itself for a whole plethora of reasons but in this case we will say then getting their grubby fingers into footy is the reason.

Saw this on Twitter, bit of a blow if true:

"Not official but apparently the players who have tested positive for COVID at Spurs are Emerson Royal, Son Heung Min, Lucas Moura, Christian Romero, Bryan Gil, Ben Davies, Ryan Mason and a member of the coaching staff.

Take this news with a pinch of salt."

Because of the shitness of Tottenham's squad, not for a sensible reason like protecting the public.

Reports of an outbreak within the Man U squad putting their midweek fixture at risk.

An outbreak in our squad after the Chelsea game on the 2nd Jan would be most unfortunate

No idea how the next 3 weeks are going to play out.

Could be strict protocols back in place and everything be fine, to behind closed doors, total league shutdown.

The Prem will not even consider it, but they should postpone at least one/two rounds of the Xmas programme.

What is it 5 games in a 10 days, there will be a lot of transmission & impacted games; they need to be sensible, but they wont.

Also what happens is any players going to AFCON get COVID, that has a knock on effect on that tournament.

Nope, the summer break is so short already; who would have thunk having a 6 week world cup during the season would fuck up the whole football calendar for 3-4 years..........

I think sides could probably cope with the odd games postponed and could play them when there are scheduled cup games/replays assuming that they are out of the cup or don't need a replay. Sides not in Europe will obviously be able to play midweek when European games are on, it will be more difficult for clubs in Europe. I suspect postponing a whole round of fixtures will be problematic.

Spurs have two to rearrange already. Remember when Man U had this last season they ended up with 4 games in about 8 days.

It won’t take many more cancellations for this to become a logistical nightmare.

With the fixture pile up there is no choice but to carry on until the point its clearly gone too far. There is too much covid in the community and will continue to rise to say a short break will stop the players getting it.

Premier League: 'We'll continue with fixtures where safe'

The Premier League has released a statement in relation to the postponement of Manchester United's match against Brighton on Saturday.

It makes interesting reading considering a report earlier today that clubs are pushing for a league-wide shutdown.

"It is with regret that this is the fourth Premier League fixture to have been postponed in the past week," say the Premier League.

"While recognising a number of clubs are experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks, it is the League’s intention to continue its current fixture schedule where safely possible.

"Manchester United continues to have an ongoing COVID-19 outbreak within their squad, which has left them unable to field a team for the match at Old Trafford.

"The Premier League Board assesses applications to postpone matches on a case-by-case basis, based on existing rules and COVID-19 postponement guidance issued to all clubs."

EFL move to enhanced anti-Covid measures

The EFL have instructed all their clubs to move to a higher level of anti-Covid measures.

"All 72 Clubs will now be required to implement enhanced RED protocols for first team training settings," read a statement.S

"Social distancing measures will be required outside of physical sessions, along with restrictions to the use of indoor facilities, manual therapy and group travel, amongst others."

All clubs will be required to carry out daily lateral flow test.
