Sometimes negotiations move on without you even having to do anything.

It will be nigh on impossible to replace Mo's goals. The worlds best player, in the prime of his career, and he already plays for us? It just has to happen for fuck sake.

You can't be paying him 400k. You could at city, utd or Chelsea. But if we pay him that we're not signing other players.

I personally think he wouldn't be as prolific elsewhere. Our team suits him. The set up and everything.

We aren't signing other players anyway

100% the team is literally designed to get the best out of him. He must also know that. It is the perfect match.

True, but the market (or lack thereof) for selling him works in Liverpool's favour massively. Who could realistically buy him right now?

His current contract being up in 2023 doesn’t work in Liverpool’s favour though. He’s free to talk to other clubs in just 12 months.

He's also more likely to get that sort of money if a fee isn't involved. He knows time is against us

The problem is it's counter productive.

If we give Mo more than there is less left to improve the team.

If I was him I'd take 200k a week and reassurances the team will be improved over taking 400k and plodding along in the top 4.

A news item flashed up on my phone saying Salah had signed the contract and an announcement is expected soon. But then it goes onto say this is from Twitter, and THEN it links to Indy Fucking Kalia

We should sell him in the summer and look to bring in Haaland or Mbappe... although I can see their wages still being a stumbling block. Surely we can find the next Salah.

Problem is all of tbe ageing non performing players on top wages who are unsellable.

Sell Salah and put Nat Phillips on the wing

A team of Nat Phillips'...

My worry is he will run his contract down. I am sure PSG etc will be promising him extra if they dont have to pay a fee, encouraging him to go on a free.

If we have not sorted it by the summer we have to sell. I worry it sends out the wrong message, and with Klopp leaving 2 years later the team will start to want to leave... But what choice do we have. We have sold well in the past, so I have faith we can do a Torres/Suarez/Salah with the cash we will bring in.

Dunno if this has been said already on this thread as not arsed scrolling back up on this but you know FSG, don't sign anybody but announce the deal of the window with Salah signing a new contract. Methinks it's done & dusted as LFC (FSG) are awaiting the right moment to announce it to quell the discontent!

There is not a chance in hell that it is already signed so sorry but anyone who thinks that is deluding themselves. This is a live negotiation. I also think the twitter messages mentioned above are a not-very-subtle ploy to put pressure on the club to hurry things up.

I am not in the "pay him whatever he wants" camp. I know it will be hugely expensive to replace him and the replacement will not be as good as Mo is today, but nevertheless we can't pay him what we can't afford.

I also think we need to take more care in the future NOT to be in a position where we are having to negotiate contracts with players who are 30; the stakes are just so high as the player looks for one more great contract and we fret about how many more years we will get out of him.

I heard on Irish radio yesterday that VVD, Trent and Andy have clauses in their contract that guarantee them parity with the highest paid player at the club.

Vigil, Trent and Robbo’s contracts were only renewed about 6 months ago. No way we inserted such clauses when we knew we were doing Salah’s next.

Reality bites at this point. We can argue all day long about whether in the current market, with current top players, Salah is worth the £400k a week. He might well be when you consider DeGea is on what £350k, Pogba even more... BUT, the reality is we can only afford to pay what the club can afford. We aren't petro dollars or quadrillionaires or whatever the fuck Newcastle are now... we have to pay salaries within our means and commensurate with what other players in the squad will feel is fair. If Salah gets his £400k a week, I have no doubts other agents will be gunning for massive salary rises for their players too... it sets a dangerous precedent when we have finite resources.

I get why Mo (and more so, his agent) wants a massively lucrative deal - he's one of the top three players on the planet right now and worth every penny. Reality is, we don't have deep enough pockets to pay him that. And even if we did, the return on that investment would diminish rapidly in the next couple of seasons due to his age.

It's a Catch 22 situation and likely we'll have a few more of them with Mane, Bobby, Ox, Milner and the like with their contracts/age dilemma.

We need to start investing in back-up/replacements for the front three... another Diogo type, we missed the boat with Bowen, I can't see FSG investing in Bellingham unless we sell one or more of the front three... it's tough for Jurgen to keep getting a tune from an ageing squad with high intensity pressing.

Not sure what the answer is... but whatever concludes... it's not going to please everyone.

Perhaps we can do what we did with Torres...sell and reinvest the proceeds in Carroll in that case. Rondon looks like he might be free.

True, but for a short while we were under the impression that our forward line was going to be Torres AND Suarez, not Suarez and a player who was not even fit when we signed him.
