That's a pretty abysmal tail with not really anything after Butler, but that's the side I'd go with in the winter. We've got to get rid of Denly and Bairstow, while Curran isn't good enough (yet) to bat in the top 6. Might as well give some new faces a go. Sibley, Crawly and Pope seemed to be talked about as the next 'cabs off the rank' so let them have a run in the side.

Burns
Sibley
Crawley
Root
Stokes
Pope
Butler (c) (wk)
Archer
Broad
Leach
Anderson

At 37 England might have to accept that Anderson’s days are numbered there were some rumours of Broad retiring also at 33.

It will be interesting to see who steps up when those two retire as they have carried the England attack superbly for years. Big bowling boots to fill.

Archer has bags of potential. Wonder if he has the consistency?

If he avoids injuries he can do whatever he wants. He has a natural action so if his workload is managed I don't think he should suffer major recurring injuries. He's showed depth that he is multifaceted and can adapt to the conditions instead of just steaming in and bowling quick on every surface. There is no reason he shouldn't join Cummins, Rabada and the other elite fast bowlers on the international scene. As you say though, needs to prove consistency, but that shouldn't be a problem. Seriously good cricketer.

On a side note, can't believe Broad is only 33, thought he was 2 years older considering how long he's been on the circuit.

How badly do England need to get him out early?

Warner is the first opener in Test history to get 8 single figure scores in a series

Correction, it was Harris.

There are hardly any decent specialist opening batsmen left in test cricket. Huge problem area for almost every country. Harris looks fucking shit, but there isn't anyone obvious to replace him with.

It does seem scripted.

It’s like waiting for the England collapse to happen. Every. Innings.

Got to admire Warner. He's been utterly selfless this series. Gets himself out as quickly as possible in order to allow Smith to work his magic.

True team player.

We've finally discovered his shortcoming . . he can't hold his drink:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan...ester-49688278

He is the world's greatest batsman and has tormented England in a topsy-turvy Ashes cricket contest.

But Australian hero Steve Smith, 30, once had a much less glorious summer on English soil.

A Warrington village cricket club has been remembering the time Smith, then aged 17, signed for the side as part of his development, back in 2007.

However, the young star left only days later after getting "upset" when his teammates took him to a local pub.

Players at Grappenhall Cricket Club wanted to welcome their new overseas recruit with a traditional visit to the Mulberry Tree in Stockton Heath, but the evening was apparently less than successful.

Club president Paul Tyerman said Smith, then a promising leg-spin bowler, was left so "under the weather" by the experience, he packed his bags and left the club five days later.

Sadly for Grappenhall, the prodigious talent failed to play a single game.

Mr Tyerman, 38, said: "He was too young in hindsight, he was just a kid. Unfortunately, it just wasn't to be.

"I guess he hadn't been used to that back home. He ended up feeling a little delicate the next morning.

"The next morning he wouldn't leave his room. After a number of attempts to talk to him by some of our players, he had already decided he was homesick and wanted to return home to Australia.

"It's a shame he didn't give it a fair go, let alone train or play for us."

The club have never since brought in an overseas player as young as 17.

Speaking to the Warrington Guardian, Mr Tyreman said: "I don't think anyone could have predicted him going on to become Australia captain and arguably the best batsman in the world."

Smith - a dual passport holder thanks to his London-born mother Gillian - is currently top-ranked Test cricket batsman in the world and has been instrumental in Australia's successful bid to retain the Ashes in England.

His imperious form has seen the 30-year-old become the leading run-scorer of the series, despite missing the third Test with a concussion injury.

As he has frequently been reminded by England fans during the series, his career has not been without controversy. In 2018, Smith was banned from all international and domestic cricket for 12 months for his role in a ball-tampering scandal.

Warner has 5 runs more than Nathan Lyon but Lyon has scored his in three fewer innings

And 13 more runs than Siddle who has scored his in 6 fewer innings

Unless he's the biggest shrinking violet on the planet, i'd dare say there was probably a bit more to it than them getting him too drunk. Probably some weird hazing rituals at play. Cricket clubs are notorious for it. Plus, these guys are announcing to the world that they took a minor to the pub and got him shitfaced? Isn't that a bit dim? The legal age is 18 in England or is it 16?

So, 399 to win. A pretty tall order & highly unlikely. A lot depends on Smith obviously & enough of the rest of the order supporting him. I'm putting Davey down for a solid 10.

I find that an incredible stat given that even after his nightmares this summer he still averages not far off 46 in Test matches.

I think it should be expected somewhat. Maybe not quite as bad, but somewhat.

After all that time out banned from test cricket he should be rusty.

Only goes to highlight how much of a freak Smith is.

Not really though. He was still able to hit a ball in the nets and practice.

He's playing like he hasn't held a cricket bat in 5 years

There are no excuses for Dave Wanker. He's brought all this on himself this little cheating turd.

Some bizarre scoring going on in the Yorks v Kent game. Kent are 316 for 5 and the 7th man in, Darren Stevens, has hit 191 of them

He's pretty explosive in the T20 Blast, often a thorn in the side for Surrey. 24 4s and 7 6s in that score, I reckon he's taken something
