I honestly don't think I've ever heard the words 'World Club Cup' come into the conversation when the best team in the World is being talked about

It means at least 2 PL games being rearranged for March-May. That's a period of the season where we're potentially going to have a lot of 2/3 games per 7 day periods as it is. It might not sound like a lot, but in reality it is.

Klopp's always talking about how teams have to play too much, too frequently.
I bet you he's not happy about this either!

You get to where that God-awful gold-coloured patch on the front of your shirt in any UEFA matches though if you win it.

You're not getting it mate. The champions of Europe are by default the best in the world. If an Asian team miraculously were to beat us in the heat of Quatar it wouldn't mean they are better than us.

Only teams from south America could feasibly challenge a European team.

Therefore if it must go ahead, just play the 2 off against each other.

The other teams are not worth bothering with.

They should all be playing off for the right to play us in that final.

I’d forgotten the 05 one. The most ludicrously one sided game ever, yet still we lost.

We’ve never won it and it represents an opportunity it’s to surpass United as the most successful club in England. 2 games to win - go all in for me

I've wanted us to win it ever since seeing us lose to Independiente. I think they take it more seriously in Latam and I recall Rafa really wanted it.

There's also the possibility that this will grow into an important competition one day too, so let's win it while we can. Look at Real Madrid's European Cups - everyone knows they won 13, not that they won a few of them before anyone else started taking the competition seriously.

I looked up the past finalists and went for the most obscure team or silliest name.

It was them or Chelsea

It was December 1984. We got spanked by Flamengo 3-0 in 1981, but I don't think I saw that game. Not sure about Club World Championships before then, I don't think we competed in any.

I distinctly remember the Indy players on the pitch after the game shouting something about Las Malvinas belonging to Argentina. I'm not that into empires but I remember it being annoying!

Grim times in Liverpool as well.

One of them was played in Japan, I saw it on TV and remember that the pitch was terrible. Or rather I didn't know it was but the commentators kept harking on about it.

I heard Lawrenson talking about one of those games (maybe both) a few years back saying that the LFC players treated it as a jolly whereas as you said in your earlier post it was a big deal for the South Americans - especially the Argies.

I think Kenneth is just highlighting that it's a knockout format rather than league table.

We as a fan base should be boycotting this and the 2022 World Cup.

These regimes are sports-washing their horrific human rights records. It's utterly shameful that FIFA are forcing us to play in a country with such an oppressive regime.

I'd be all for the club boycotting this tournament

Totally agree. I will be cheering us on but am disgusted at fifa in general.

That day they gave the world Cups to Russia and Qatar was blatter and fifa publicly saying "fuck you" to the world. Corrupt as fuck.

Id boycott fifas spinsters too

Jurgen Klopp will take Liverpool to Club World Cup in Qatar and leave reserve coach in charge for Carabao Cup quarter-final

Paul Joyce, Northern Football Correspondent
November 25 2019, 5:00pm,
The Times

Liverpool Under-23 coach Neil Critchley is set to take charge of the team to face Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup quarter-final, the night before Jürgen Klopp launches the European champions’ bid to win the Club World Cup.

How Liverpool will split their resources to cope with the unprecedented situation of playing two matches in two continents within 24 hours has become clearer, with Klopp confirming that he will be in Qatar with a senior squad for the Fifa tournament from Sunday, December 15.

Liverpool’s semi-final in the Club World Cup — a competition they have never won — is scheduled to take place on December 18 and the final, or third/fourth place play-off, on December 21.

The team’s arrangements for the domestic cup game at Villa Park will mirror those for a normal first-team fixture — travelling on the first-team bus, for example, and staying in the same hotel as if Klopp was present — although it will be a largely youthful squad.

The likes of Rhian Brewster, Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, Caoimhin Kelleher, Ki-Jana Hoever, Pedro Chirivella, Neco Williams and Sepp van den Berg have played in the earlier rounds of the competition which resulted in victories over MK Dons and Arsenal.

A sprinkling of senior players, such as James Milner, Adam Lallana and Joe Gomez, have also featured in those games, but it is anticipated that they will be in Qatar with Klopp. Liverpool do not have to take a full squad of 23 players to the tournament and may take fewer to spread their playing staff across the matches.

A final decision on the prospect of Brewster, 19, and Elliott, 16, for example, flying to Qatar after the Villa tie has still to be taken, but it would seem unlikely.

Liverpool held extensive talks with the EFL before committing to two games in 24 hours as they juggle with the demands of a hectic schedule, which will involve them playing 12 games in five different competitions over the next six weeks.

The possibility of Klopp’s assistant manager, Pepijn Lijnders, taking charge at Villa Park and then flying to the Middle East had been briefly mooted. However, it is increasingly likely that Critchley, who joined Liverpool in 2013, will be at the helm.

Critchley has been spending more time at Melwood, the club’s training ground, recently, along with the academy director Alex Inglethorpe and other academy staff members, to learn as much as they can ahead of the game.
