I was thinking about the shirt sales thing. I reckon it is bollocks.

I reckon the majority of people buying shirts for kids etc. have commited to doing so. The only thing that changes is which player you have on the back.

No way does any signing, Messi, Ronaldo - anyone drive up millions of NEW shirt sales, as in millions of people that weren't committed to buying a shirt anyway.

So the interesting bit for me would be if 3 million people buy Ronaldo shirts, how many fewer people buy Rashford and Cavani shirts.

It smacks of creative accounting.

I had a vague memory of it, but found the detail quite shocking.

I have made the same point (highlighted) to Utd fans I know - pointing out that if instead of buying a Rashford jersey they bought a Ronaldo one it would cost the club money as names are usually pay by the letter......

The extra sales don't come from die hard supporters. A lot of football fans follow players rather than being tied to a particular team and will but shirts because they like the shirt.

Most Mexicans have their Mexican club and then follow European football. Sometimes they have favorite teams and sometimes they want to watch particular players.

I thought the same...City needed an out-and-out striker, and Ronaldo fits the bill. However, United didn't really need him and only stepped in because it was City in the running.

Do you reckon that happens to the numbers they are claiming at a £70 shirt, even with say 85% profit they’d literally need to sell millions of them.

I don’t buy it (literally and figuratively).

The idea that suddenly millions of people are going to go out and buy a shirt that they would not have bought because Ronaldo is there is laughable. The are mosly going to be shirts that would have been sold anyway, many of those would have had a different player on the back too.

Its the same as the Fernandes penalty scenario. Ronaldo goals from the spot are at his expense, not additional.

Hmm, I think they'll sell millions of shirts with Ronaldo on the back, for him, for us, for Chelsea etc. Not in this country but there are billions of people in the earth. Why else would sponsors pay such massive sums to footoball?

Can people stop shitposting about transfers being recouped by fucking shirt sales. Unless they have a unique licencing deal which United do not it simply doesn't happen.

This may have something to do with the Ronaldo deal.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9533435/Manchester-Uniteds-largest-sponsor-Adidas-unhappy-club-falling-shirt-sales.html

On the back of that, the Ronaldo deal at £12m will undoubtedly see an upturn in shirt sales and keep Adidas happy.

Reading between the lines in that article the drop in shirt sales 100k fewer than the previous year saw Adidas pay man utd £200k less, now it doesn't say that the drop in sales and revenue are directly linked that suggests they get ~£2 a shirt. The suggestion is that they sell less than 2 million shirts a year. In order to cover the £12m transfer fee they would need to sell 6million shirts more than normal, seems unlikely to me...

The numbers will probably make Adidas happier but I don't see it coming close to covering the transfer fee from a Man Utd perspective.

Uniteds most likely income boost will be people in the club shop paying for Ronaldo on the back.

And the life-size cardboard cutouts if any of those wankers from the Wolves game at the weekend are about.

To be fair, they'll be unique purchases, as I couldn't imagine Maguire ones are too popular.

The myth that shirt sales can pay for a player’s transfer is usually wrong in most cases, but with Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford it looks set to be the case.

In just the first 12 hours of his squad number being announced by Manchester United, Ronaldo No.7 shirts racked up £32.5million in sales across the multiple platforms it was available, according to website lovethesales.com

With how the deal with kit sponsors was worked out, United have gained 10 per cent of the proceeds, which stacks up to around a quarter of the fee for Ronaldo

Still nope then.

I’d argue you need to add the agent fee to the £12m too

I don't think anyone said it would pay for him completely.

I think we need to factor in the fact that he's a dick too, which you can't really put a price on

I hope you're all ready for a drastic change in the league now that Ronaldo is here. UTD is already th darling of the FA and now that the greatest player in history has 'come home', they're going to try and make sure this swan song season becomes a fairy tale PL title. If you thought sky commentators were bad before, it'll go through the roof. I expect taylor to faint multiple times during a UTD match.

The refs will be a bigger problem........they'll enjoy being part of the 'Ronaldo Roadshow'.....similar to the ref in the recent Portual-Ireland match.
Every match he features in, he will benefit from from a different ruleset than everyone else.

Couldnt sleep the other night and had 5 annoying dreams one after the other. The most annoying was 'old man Ronaldo' scored 2 goals and assisted 3 goals, or vice versa not sure. If it happens I'm done this season.

I had a dream the other night about getting distracted when barbecuing halloumi. It wasn't my fault and I was doing the right thing but got blamed for the burnt halloumi and was pretty pissed off with how unfair it was.
