I never understood the hype. He is not fast enough to play as a fullback and constantly does unecessary stepovers or turns resulting in nothing but time wasting.

Not sure there was much "hype" for Neco. Apart from a couple of people on here, most could see he was nowhere near good enough. The biggest drop in quality from a first eleven player in the squad. It doesnt help that TAA is playing as a virtual winger. I am sure most seasoned fullbacks would struggle in the role, but at this stage Neco needs proper games to develop his all round game.

He is certainly no Nat Phillips.

Not necessarily hyped from fans, from journalists and also his coaches. They obviously thought highly of him to give him such a position and also to let go of Hoever instead, who was also highly rated.

Hoever did show signs of great potential.

He'll end up a sweeper, like Ruud Gullit, cleaning up all loose balls

I don't know if Hoever counted as "home grown" or not but that could be why they kept Nico and got rid of the non Brit.

They got rid of Hoever because someone wanted him and were prepared to pay - even better it was Wolves as it covered part of the Jota fee

We didn't want rid of him, but had to sell due to no interest in Shaq/Wilson.
