It's sandwiched between Wrexham and Llangollen pretty much, north east Wales so nowhere near Holyhead which is North West Wales.

I don't think he's anywhere near ready for the first team.

I can only imagine those slagging him on social media are Welsh non Liverpool supporting people. I'm not sure many more would know of him otherwise. Sad all the same.

He's only a kid, thought he was very poor last night but would never condone abusing the kid. He is not ready to step in for Trent though, that is abundantly clear.

I agree, he looks nowhere near ready, which is why I thought a loan would be useful, as he does show good touches. He needs games.

Giving him abuse om social media though is a fucking disgrace. I wonder if they would be really be Liverpool fans doing this. Either way they should be ashamed.

Liverpool rally around young full-back Neco Williams after social media abuse

The teenager was bizarrely targeted by a section of supporters who criticised his Carabao Cup display against Lincoln City

By Chris Bascombe
30 September 2020 • 1:40pm

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and his players rallied around youngster Neco Williams after the full-back was subject to social media abuse after last week's Carabao Cup tie.

The teenager was targeted by a section of supporters who criticised his display against Lincoln City, a reaction which prompted him to blackout his Twitter account.

While those criticising were themselves the subject of a backlash from fans bemused and embarrassed by the negative responses towards a player who was a key member of an outstanding 7-2 win, Williams was suitably upset enough to require reassurance from his manager and teammates.

Assistant manager Pep Lijnders addressed the incident ahead of Liverpool’s League Cup tie with Arsenal on Thursday, in which Williams is sure to feature.

“We had players speaking with him. We had our manager speaking with him,” said Lijnders.

“First of all, and this is most important to understand, Neco is a doer. A doer makes mistakes. We don’t want safe play. We don’t want a player who doesn’t take risks. Our game is based on everyone taking initiative from every position and that is what we want. One of the lessons for each young boy coming through - and each player - is it is a weakness if you get caught up with praise and criticism. I think he dealt with it really well, to be honest.”

Williams rose to prominence with a series of eye-catching performances in last season’s domestic cups, the right-back rewarded with a new contract and a call-up to the Welsh national team. He scored on his international debut earlier this month. His experience last week was another reminder of how social media can negatively impact young players still adjusting to the limelight.

“That is a phase he goes through. But again, you cannot get caught up with praise or criticism. Neither helps you as a young player,” added Ljinders.

Liverpool will be without £10 million left-back summer signing Kostas Tsimikas on Thursday due to a thigh injury, and captain Jordan Henderson is not expected back for first-team consideration until this weekend’s trip to Aston Villa.

Xherdan Shaqiri, Taki Minamino and Curtis Jones are all expected to feature after their impressive performances last week.

Jones is making rapid progress, impacting with goals or assists each time he is called upon.

“Curtis is the type we really like,” said Lijnders. “He has so much bravery, so much courage and so much self-confidence. The proper self-confidence - not the wrong one. He is probably the most offensive midfielder we have. He is the first one who makes the surprise move in the box from midfield, the first one who shoots.

“These young boys are not talents any more, they are proper squad players. We are really happy with his journey. He is a boy from the city so ambition, passion is always there.”

Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is still a few weeks from contention as he continues to recover from a knee injury.

Amazing how well Pep speaks to the press. Total confidence in what he is saying and a clear message (wonder whom he learned that from)! What a great response to reassure Neco.

He's great isn't he. If it were up to me he'd be nailed on to be Klopp's successor right now.

Hopefully Klopp sticks around a while yet, and unfortunately I assume if he has ambitions of becoming a manager he will probably leave before then.

I agree completely.

I think Klopp will help push that too.

I worried when he fell out with that Buvac fella. In the same way Rafa did with Paco Ayerstan all those years ago, it could have disrupted the teams development. Pep seems to have the total confidence of Klopp though.

10 more years for Jurgen and if Pep wants to go and become a manager, let him, and just bring him back when Klopp retires.

I don’t know. He’s still only 37 and he’s already left prematurely for a manager’s role. I think the plan is to remain and be in contention to take over from Klopp, and he’ll still only be in his early 40’s.

Interesting as I thought he was pretty poor last night.

I looked much better at times last season so I'm hoping its a form thing which young players generally go through.

He was poor, thought Gosens gave him the run around. His positioning is exposed in every game I've seen him. Only a kid though against good opposition & got no support from Mo.

From a purely unstatistical eye test he seems to be out of position a lot, he gets caught in the ball a few times and I noticed he pulls players back in the few games I watched. Both goals came down his side but it’s the unit as opposed to just him - Rhys was badly out of position for the second goal also

If he would stop doing unnecessary step overs and move the ball on quicker, he'll improve. Also not sure he has the pace to make it at fullback but its early days.

Stopping our fullbacks seems to be the best way of stopping Liverpool.

Id love to see our stats with either Trent and/or Robertson out.

Neco's best game for us by miles.

His concentration seemed spot on, almost no mistakes. A lot more focussed, and a lot less rash.

All the more impressive after Saturday. He must've been in a pretty bad place so to play like that was pretty awesome.

Thats what makes Klopp special, the ability to hook a young layer at HT when he is having a shocker. Manage him, coach him, throw him back in a tougher game, and watch a better performance. A lot of careers and promise mnust have dissapeared with managers not understanding the psychology of a young player.

It probably was his best game but they targeted him and most of the danger cane down his side. I’m not sure he got that much support from those in front of him to be honest......Neres always seemed to be 1:1 with him and Tadic dropped out to overload.

All things considered a clean sheet and an assist for the winner

Yep Neres was a danger and Ajax tried to target Neco and Kelleher. Both showed massive balls so they backed off. Neco was brilliant and concentrated on the chipped balls as well as the one twos really well.

Klopp! Neco!
