Yeah thanks for sharing that, Buzzo.
The specialist knee surgeon in that says it’s usually 9 months to return to full strength and the knee can still be vulnerable before that point.
The Euros will kick off at just over 7 and a half months since his injury.

Has there been any news on Gomez’ recovery? Nice to see he’s still alive at least.

Was there any news on what Gomez's injury was, apart from collapsing in training with the international team?

Ruptured patella tendon. Serious injury and a tough one to come back from.

The Dutch should be looking toward having Virgil available for the World Cup rather than worrying about the Euros.

Hopeless deadlifts. May as well not bother haha.
He is looking good. Dare we believe he may be back before too long.

Must be demoralising as fuck to be walking back in after thrashing it out on the training ground trying to reinvent 4-3-3 formations on the back of our 9 league defeat in a row, only to then see an apparently injured Virgil pushing 5 ton weights about without even breaking sweat.

Looks like Romanian deadlifts. He'll be working on strengthening his hamstrings.
Gomez was doing squats the other day and was half repping them though
Wish I could go the gym

Half reps have their place it done correctly- ie for rehab or as part of a wide programme including full ROM. If Big Z uses them I’m not gonna argue.
I have my own gym

I've never heard of Romanian deadlifts but then I'm not a weightlifter. I do mostly calisthenics and kettle bells. Big Virgil makes everything look effortless.

A RDL would be the equivalent to the Swing, same movement pattern with the swing being more explosive in nature! I do miss the big weights...7 more weeks and counting!

Back me up on the pussy pad Arms please
Was squats yesterday for me - finally back up to some half decent weights - 5x130K. Didn’t think its happen cos me knees are fucked nowadays but Mrs Plod started me using a big fat booty band around the thighs which means I engage the arse and hammies and it’s made a huge difference. Was always so quad dominant.

He must be ahead of schedule?
He’s obviously not going to get rushed back but he’s not going to spend the next 4 months passing the ball about on his own?

I think he’s just well enough to kick the ball about by himself. I don’t think that means he’s finished the coordination and precision training or fitness and muscle building stages yet.
He’s still got the football specific rehab (tacking, jumping, changing direction, etc) ahead of him, which he’s still at least a month or 2 away from beginning according to that Athletic article.

I know, but working on lateral movement for 4 months? It must be a tricky one, because the Euros will be looming large in his mind as a target.

Well, 3 months of focusing on making sure the knee is back to being able to withstand what it needs to do.

I think he's ahead of schedule and I would not be surprised if he's back in full training in 8 weeks.

Virgil’s surgery was late October.

I’m not sure there’s anything to suggest he’s ahead of schedule.

Maybe, maybe not, but is there anything wrong in speculating about it?

He will need to play one or two league games towards the end of the season to make sure he is match fit for the Ataturk

Exactly it’s either that or starting to think about next seasons kit or fantasy summer signings

CL Final
It will be tough on Ben Davies after having performed heroically in all the other rounds. But we can’t start the final without Virgil.

Ben Davies is going to marshal us all the way to No.7 and score in the final.
Then we'll sell him to Burnley for £35m in the summer and a fully rehabilitated Virgil van Dijk will take his place in August.

I'd prefer he not be rushed back and just trai and strengthen for next season. If I had my way I'd convince him not to go to the euros but thats not going to happen sadly.
