I know, I may have been involved in some of the threads (I’ve certainly been here long enough). Another angle: Djimi Traore played more games than GH and won the European Cup. Both were ropey as you like though and neither ought to be mentioned alongside Hansen or VVD.

Can understand thinking he was overpriced and even not realising just how good he'd be. But to reckon Lewis Dunk could 'probably do a similar job'?

I always thought Virg was perfect for us on paper, but when linked with Mane, I made a similar argument about getting Andre Ayew for a fraction of the price.

Eh
When we bought him from Southampton for 75m, celtic got 7.5m due to a 10% sell on clause.

I don't usually watch post match chat but I did last night. I'd rather listen to Michael Owen than those tw*ts Ferdinand and Savage. I thought the way they treated Peter Walton - laughing at him, mocking him, talking over him and just being incredibly obtuse was really shit and I wanted him to tell them to fuck off. It really irritated me. They're bullies

Owen is better than those two, yeah. Ferdinand gets worse and worse, after a relatively (ish) promising start to his punditry career.

It's as if they get relaxed and allow the real personality out. It was the same with Carragher and Neville they both started off well in punditry and its as if once there's a bit of praise given about their "insights" the ego comes through and well you get what you see from them.

Definitely agree Carra has made his punditry more of a 'lads down the pub on a Saturday night' type banter now - when he first started his insights were sharp and on the money. He's more lad culture now than pundit.
Neville is a whinger, especially when Utd lose so long may that continue. I don't mind him as a pundit on other games though... he's quite balanced apart from MUFC/LFC commentary.

He looked sooooo relaxed in that 1-0-1, almost yawning as he dealt with it.
I think he's the best defender I've ever seen in 1-on-1 situations.
I also think Alisson is the best goalkeeper I've ever seen at 1-on-1s when the attacker tries to round the keeper.

His ability to switch the afterburners on it also crucial. Was it Mane or Salah that said that Virgil is the fastest player at the club?

It's an absolute joke how good he is. I must admit I was a tad worried about whether he'd be the same after his injury - it's taken a bit of time but it was always going to. Last night he was perfection, a genuine 10/10.

It was outstanding - it's hard to see when his decline will begin, probably at 35!

The 'calm as you like' line in his song is so appropriate. He seems so utterly unflustered no matter the stadium atmosphere and pressure he is under. The potential of a future Virg-Konate CB pairing is tantalising.
Gomez is going to need some love soon. FA Cup maybe?

Gomez has to get a run out v Norwich in the Cup yes. He's probably going to want to leave in the summer imo, he's too good to be sitting on the bench for practically a full season. But we've 3 world class CBs rightly ahead of him so what can you do.

Big Virg reduced Dzeko to a whimpering wreck when they both went up for a header in the centre circle at around the 90 minute mark.
Virg seemed to jump about 10 foot in the air to get the ball (Slight exaggeration, possibly?)

I'd rest Virgil and play Matip and Gomez over the weekend. We can't allow Gomez to go in the summer, as we'll end up with 1 of the kids (maybe Williams is ready now I don't know, I read about Quansah who's highly rated). It all depends how fit the first choice CBs can be over a consistent period of time, seems to have been the case this season. It only needs 1 of the 3 above to get injured for the door to open for Joe.

He’s definitely back to being the best centre half in the world. Possibly our best ever.

Possibly the best ever!!!
In reality, the likes of Baresi and Maldini would contest that too because of their longevity.......but if VVD is still here in 5 years and cooking on gas, then he could be up there with genuine world greats.
I love the way he chose LFC - he could have made a lot more cash and won more trophies somewhere else. He'd have been guaranteed 5 or 6 league titles had he chose City.

Yep
His reading of the game is back to matrix levels. He just cruises around but utterly dominates who ever he is up against. Big and cumbersome or fast looking to run in behind, he handles them all.
His calm sense of positioning enables Joel to go on his mad forests forward also. He and Konate look like a very strong option for us going forward.
We just need to fit Gomez in somehow? What an option for 4th choice!

He's absolutely rapid too. He doesn't need to be, as his positioning is so good; but for his size he can shift

He was 2nd fastest at the club behind Gomez. I Imagine Diaz will be fastest now.

I think he beats every centre half I've ever seen - his raw attributes are off the scale, there's not been a defender like him.
Not hyperbole, he doesn't have a single weakness to his game.
