I would have prefered it if we fired some shots rather than just waiting for them to surrender though

I said it before, but we look knackered...the same core players have been playing every game. Salah and Mane need a rest, but without Jota there is no backup...unless we want to trust Origi. Robbo and Trent need a rest, but Milner and Tsimikas have been out. Even in midfield we've been bereft or interchanges, with Hendo and Gini playing every minute.
A week off now, hopefully some players back soon and maybe a CB on loan/signed. Still in this race, we've done better than we expected with the defensive injuries we have had, so we're in the mix still.

Talking of siege, that made Hasenhuttle fall to his knees in tears. Not many teams do that, especially to a side like Southampton who are really good. Shame we're not having consistency in games at the moment and it's not happening for our front 3.

Football is definitely fucking weird. Last season we won so many games but i didn't think we played particularly well in many of them. Having watched us for over 30 years, I've seen us play much better, but we were machine like, often just doing enough, rarely putting teams away. Hey first title in 30 years, I'll take it in spades, but Imo our attacking play was much worse from open play than the season before. Especially the way the front 3 linked. Not very fluid in attacks. I mean you win a title, drop only 2 points at home and Firmino hasn't managed a goal in front of the kop. That is plain strange. But it didn't matter The! The big difference is we were managing to scrape tight games and come out the right side. This season that hasn't happened but the front 3 have continued that lack of ideas in open play to the next level. They are 3 individuals, all capable of a goal out of nothing but lack cohesion and the clinical instinct.
They've played an awful lot of games and it's either tiredness, lack of focus or lack of relationship between at least 2 of them. They've become predictable and pretty easy to nullify.
I don't think they will click again. We won at Palace easily by not starting all 3 together. When Jota played he held the ball better, beat players, linked up with his team mates oh and scored goals. I'd drop Salah and let him sulk. He offers next to nothing when his head isn't right. The other 2 at least put a shift in.
We need to regroup, get a signing or two in to lift the place like Fergie used to do most January's. Usually a goal scorer. Then see if we can't get some results going. Utd strangely could be a good game for us. We'll be 3 points behind so a win is vital.

I hope our first 11 get a rest on Friday - but I'm not sure they can all be rested without playing a bunch of kids. But it's only the Cup so who cares? I would send the first 11 off to Dubai to catch up with Virge! Few days in the sun...then back for Yernited.

...if we lose to Utd then the gap could be six points before Burnley. Let's hope we hit some level of performance again soon or we could be well adrift by the end of Jan...

Don't worry I'm sure the VAR ref will correct any decision errors that go against us.
After all that's what it's for, isn't it?

Haven’t verified this but mate sent me summat saying he’s awarded scum 5 penalties in 10 games and us 0 in 14. 1 against both.
License to dive for Scum, as if they needed it more.

Paul Tierney will referee this Sunday's match between Liverpool and Man United.
He has awarded United 5 penalties in his last 10 matches - and 1 against.
He has awarded Liverpool 0 penalties in 14 matches - and 1 against.

So we're three points behind. Can't even look at the table.
The way it's going it'd be typical to lose the home record to those bastards and fall 6 behind. Unthinkable. It's our biggest league game for a while.

Probably our biggest league game for 7 years as the rivalry is the most intense one and now it’s a top of the table clash.

They are on a good run but if we hadn't been so poor in the last few games we would be clear at the top. That's the frustration. I just think momentum is hard to change. Can you see us winning 15 or 16 of the last 19? I wouldn't place a bet.

A lot of it hinges on Matip being fit imo. If he isn't, it fucks up a lot more than just CB. If he's fit we'll batter them, in lots of ways it's the perfect game for us to get out of this slump. Just one look at the table ought to put a rocket up their arses.

I think United are a better team than some people on here think. I still feel they’re are not champion material yet but they are growing and improving.
We will need to be at close to our best to beat them Sunday.

And you think Ole is a manager that can do the remaining 15 out of 19 based on that. Have a look at their top 6 table, they'll be languishing near the bottom. Spurs 6-1 ring some bells?

I think City might do it this year if we don't but there's no way United will be languishing. I've been cringing for a while when people are happy that they win.

I meant they are languishing at the bottom of the mini top 6 league table.

Just said the same in the match thread - Matip is key. Without him and we have a gaping wound for them to attack. It’s the one area they are really strong and that’s pacy forwards who like to get in behind - Rashford, Martial, Greenwood and even Cavani can hurt us there. Fab’s partner if not Matip will be targeted with balls over the top time and again.
Our front line and midfield need to squeeze the life out of them to stop them playing good balls into the channels. We also need to stay the fuck away from them in the box - their diving and this ref is also a worry. I fucking hate United and it drives me nuts having to “worry” about them

It's such a massive swing if we win or lose. Either back top or six points behind!
I still think City are the ones to worry about but if, God forbid, United we're to go 6 points clear then they are, regrettably, right in it given what a chaotic, unpredictable season this is going to be.
Massive game! I think we'll do them!

I just can't see how we can drop so many points against shit teams and still hope to win the league. Basically we're going to have to beat utd, City, spurs, Everton and Leicester to not drop points. The players look devoid of energy, ideas or confidence. Mission impossible for me, too many cheap points just given away.

Yeah, it's not going to happen. Others will drop a few like that, but I think we've lost too many already.

Whilst I largely share your pessimism, such talk with such certainty is too early at this stage. It’s job done for the Bitters if our players think like this.

Lots to go and have lost only two games.
But I’ve checked our next 6/8 run of games in the league and it’s a difficult run. We’re up against it but we can do it.

I agree, give me a full fit squad it is on, no fit centre halfs & our best midfielders in defence it is not

Seasons not even half way finished and we’re up there... I don’t think we’re favorites, but we certainly have a good chance.. if (big if) we win the next 3, things might look completely different... and then jota comes back and all of a sudden we might be optimistic again... hopefully anyway...
