Bought a Shakti mat, used it 3 times so far. I'm not sure if it works yet but I'm definitely dropping off to sleep towards the end of a 20 minutes stint. It fucking hurts though at the start

As my mountain bike is fucked, I've taken to walking and hiking up a 200m high hill. Quite enjoying that and also beginners calisthenics.

Just been reading up on these after seeing your post.. intrigued! How much did yours cost? Did you get an official Shakti mat or a knock-off one

I got the official one but I reckon the Amazon knock offs are probably as effective. What Shakti say though is that theirs are made in an ethical factory with good work practices and fair salaries. That swayed me
Used it again this morning and whether real or not my back seems to be getting better. Could just be that it's getting better because I've stopped running

Cheers I ordered the official one. If it doesn't work its definitely your fault

any recommendations on a smart watch? wanted for swimming/running/gym. Not pro by any stretch. Just something decent, thinking Polar M2 or Galaxy watch 3.

I have a Garmin vivoactive 3 music.
Supports paypass, stores music, connects to headsets via Bluetooth. Cuts down the crap you need to carry.
And it's also a fairly smart looking watch.

Played my first post-lockdown 5 a side last night.
I say played, loosely. I've never been older, slower, and rarely less fit. Shambles.
I incurred the wrath of our football group's very own Angry Chris. He just about stopped short of calling me a vole c*nt though. The vole c*nt.

I have the Galaxy Watch 2. My interest in a tech/fitness interface is fairly limited. It's bang on for running which is what I mainly use it for fitness wise. It's also waterproof.

I miss my Fitbit Iconic, it displayed exactly the stats that motivated me to exercise and keep moving. Sleep stats were the best in the business too.
I currently wear an Apple Watch SE and while it's an excellent smartwatch, it's not really the motivator I thought it would be compared to the Fitbit.

I have the Garmin Forerunner 735XT. Very good watch. Use it for running, swimming and gym. Prefer it to my Apple Watch 6 for fitness. The latest Garmin Forerunner 745 looks good...

I've lost so much cardio fitness in the last year, I'm blaming long covid but it's probably not that.
Signed up to a couch to 5km training session on iFit and am very slowly picking up. Getting orthotics fitted is helping too as my back isn't feeling the strain. I've a lot of weight to lose, probably 3st

Picked up running again from around mid last year. Got myself fit to run a 5k in 24mins or so last September, then started training for a 10k but got set back with a calf strain in Nov., so had to stop for around 6 weeks. Picked it up again beginning of Jan and I've just completed week 6 of an 8 week 10k training block, with a race scheduled 1st week of March. So cross fingers I can run that 10k in 47/48 mins, that's the plan.
Also lost around 8kgs in the process.

Nice mate. How did you get started?
I want to start running again, start couch to 5k, typically do the first few weeks and then life gets in the way.
Ideally I need to lose about 8kg also

I was always a bit of a runner, but there was no consistency or purpose in my bouts of running, so always picked up niggles here and there and just never got going, despite always having had the stamina to run well.
So last year I decided to try and sort it out, got myself a Garmin watch and started with 1 of their training plans (think it was a 10 week block of training), followed it then found myself getting hooked to the whole science behind running, so kept going and I've been loving it.
Now I can train 4 times a week without injuries (apart from picking up that stupid calf strain last year), but got myself a rehab plan and feel stronger now. Just reading about it all, helps as well, as it keeps you interested in the matter. The science behind it is fascinating.
I've never done a couch to 5k plan, but it helped having a good watch with all the bells and whistles + training plan. 5k is the ideal distance to start as well, take it easy and see how it goes. You'll lose well in no time if you keep the consistency. I've packed up drinking as well, for the most part and found it helped. I haven't had an alcoholic drink since Christmas.

Yeah, 5k is definitely a good starting point.
I ran a couple of marathons back in the day (2002 and 2003) and I guess it is very much getting into the routine of training. Finding the time is the key for me.

Working from home has massively opened up time in my schedule. Never had the time when I was commuting into and out of London every day, but now I can do my running in the morning and start work around 10:15. I've got no kids, so it massively helps as well.
Wish you good luck man, if you do start to train. Get Strava and we can follow each other to get some motivation.

I've not needed a couch to 5k before, I've been able to run 6k straight off the bat but age has finally caught up with me it seems
47mins 10k is pretty impressive, as is marathon running

I too picked it up round the time I found out I had crazy high BP. But the baby stopped sleeping and work got crazy and it all went away.
The motivation to do the first run is difficult. Good work on yours though, its really impressive. I have never run a 10k and it was always my aim.

I've run a few 10ks and it feels a mental length of time to be running. Half and full marathons must feel endless

Did a 10k in 48 minutes about ten years ago, no fucking chance of that happening again now lol. Have just started doing the NHS C25K, really enjoying running again.

Did my 10k today in Richmond Park (London). Very hilly and managed 48:25 which I'm happy about. Next target is to run a flatter course, maybe under 48:00, then maybe try for <45:00 or a half marathon, still undecided. Don't really have time to train for half marathon, as the training can be a couple of hours long.

I've done 6 marathons in the past 10 years - and a few half too - I'm nearly 60 and its getting harder to do the longer distances - I've stopped caring about the times. Every one I finished I swore never never ever to it again as its agony - but I'm now thinking to slip one more in for the 60th
I'd say to anyone trying or starting up again is to sort out the footwear - get orthotics from a podiatrist if necessary - because the constant repeated pounding will cause injuries if your posture isn't right and the older we get the harder it is to recover. Good luck all ..

That's crazy stuff How old were you when you completed your first one?
I'd been suffering with lower back pain in the kidney area and a back pain specialist diagnosed a postural issue. So now I do have orthotics and they have helped a lot. My fitness is holding me back but I can at least joh on the treadmill pain free

I found that foam rolling, stretching, strength training on a regular basis helps as well.

I think the best 5k I managed was 26mins and that was after about 2yrs of training. I'm doing a couch to 5k now and a 35min pace would be a proper challenge

So I have gone up in weight again, work, baby, life. All excuses I need to cut out.
You guys have insprired me to get back to C25K again. Did it back in the day and was comfortably running sub 30 minute 5ks and could have pushed on.
I think the problem for me is diet. Im in the car alot so naturally the only food on the road is fast food. Extremely tempting and bad for me. Especially getting to my late 30s.

Same for me Alex. I need to get out and exercise. I lack motivation. But being type 2 diabetic my ongoing health should be all the motivation I need. Typically for me I need it to be part of a routine and with lighter nights that may start to be possible.

And with kids, finding time. With a baby for you even harder to find time. I put on a stack of weight when the kids were young.

Any tips?
Got a place for the London marathon this year, first one i've done. Found a 6 month training plan that should start fairly soon, but other than that......fucking dreading it at the moment. Going to get a gait test done and get some decent running shoes, also should really quit smoking

Just noticed the London Marathon is now in October, was wondering how the fuck you were going to squeeze a 6 month training schedule in by April
From my memory you have to train up to being comfortable running at least a half marathon in training. But I wouldn't go over 18-20. No matter how much you train the last 6 miles are purgatory. London is a good marathon though, totally flat all the way round and (at least used to be) well attended by fans.
Definitely give up the tabs
Also, I ran it twice, and the buzz as you run done the mall, massive crowds screaming you on, is second to none embrace the challenge and try and enjoy it. The challenge is the training and staying fit, if you do that the day takes care of itself.

Care to share the plan?
Were similar age right? I guess not similar weight. But 6 months seems reasonable to be able to run that distance.
