Not sure if posted before...

WHO IS EMRE CAN?

Can was one of the most versatile young players in the Bundesliga.

Having spent most of his career so far in the youth set up at Bayern Munich, the Frankfurt-born player was one pipped for the top from an extremely early age.

After only four first-team appearances at Bayern, though, Can's star faded during the 2012/13 season, and so in the summer of 2013 he chose to make the switch to Leverkusen
.
It has done him a world of good, and he has developed into an invaluable midfield force for his new club. He has also represented Germany at every level from Under 15 to Under 21.

Can prefers to play in central midfield - 'either attacking or defending, I don't care either way' - but has been employed as a centre-back and a left-back on various occasions.

As captain of the German Under 17s team, he was the calming influence at the heart of play. His physical strength is of particular use going forward, though he is rarely overly reckless.

It has been remarked on several occasions that Can seems to have a maturity beyond his years, and his technical ability as a playmaker, either from the back or the front, is now beyond doubt.

The most commonly drawn comparison is Bastian Schweinsteiger. And not only because the young Can puts as much effort into his hairstye as Schweinsteiger once did.

His ability to switch effortlessly from defence to midfield, his dangerous shot, and his control over the pace of the game all do remind one of the established Bayern star.

For those watching his marauding runs through the centre at Leverkusen this season though, Toni Kroos has always also sprung to mind.

It is little surprise that these two Bayern stars have had an influence on Can's play. He has trained with them, or at least in close proximity to them, for several of his formative years.

Seen him play a few times and never impressed. Pretty much an unknown quantity to most of us, not an exciting signing but sure hopefully he progresses here.

It is too early to judge him but we seem to be scouting him a long time (he said 4 years) so we clearly saw something in him that we decided to trigger his release clause.

Like you I haven't seen much in his game to get too excited about it at this time but he could turn out to be a very good buy.

Time will tell.

I do think we would probably benefit more if we left him one more season at Bayer L as I am not so sure he'll get lot of playing time with us next year.

I have seen a lot of him, he is better than Hendo at the same stage. Expect busy busy, nothing dramatic, always available for the ball. A good long term investment long term. Highly thought of by most Fans overhere.

He is a seriously good player to get in alongside Henderson or replace him at times. Gerrard's place he could take as well, but need a bit more experience for that.

I'm really excited about him, seen him a ~10 times last season, and I think he is a very clever midfielder for his age.

A bit of an oldish article (feb 2013) but sounds quite promising.

Quote:
A native of Frankfurt, the 19-year-old German of Turkish-descent joined Bayern Munich’s youth academy in 2009, having spent three years in Eintracht Frankfurt’s youth ranks.

In 2011, he made the step up to Bayern Munich II, the club’s reserve team which plays in the lower divisions.

Achievements

Can - pronounced as "Chan" - captained the Germany U17s team that reached the semi-finals of the 2011 World U17 Championship’s scoring the second goal - a wonderful solo effort - in that semi-final defeat (which you can watch below).

Liverpool fans may recognise one of his team-mates in that team, Samed Yesil, who joined the Reds in the summer – but Can is a more exciting prospect.

He has yet to make a first-team appearance for Bayern – although he has made it onto the subs bench - but with the Bavarians all but certain of winning the Bundesliga this season, coach Juup Heynckes will be tempted to give him a run out towards the end of the season.

Attributes

Although a central midfielder of the attacking variety, Can is also capable of filling in at the heart of the defence. During the second half of a January friendly with rivals Schalke 04 he was brought on at centre-back and did not let the side down. Such is his versatility that he can also fill in at left-back on occasion.

Can is also comfortable with the ball at his feet despite his tall and powerful physique. In fact he is also able to play in the hole behind the striker, providing strength, vision and creativity.

Potential

Bayern Munich chairman Uli Hoeness has described Can as the “midfielder of the future” while Germany’s U17 youth coach believes he is “the most complete player” he has ever seen at that age.

Can’s style and versatility is something that incoming Bayern manager Pep Guardiola will appreciate but with fierce competition for places at the Allianz Arena, the youngster could be loaned out to another Bundesliga club to gain experience similarly to current Bayern stars Philippe Lahm and Toni Kroos.

There is always the danger that he could be a jack-of-all-trades and master-of-none but judging from the regard in which he is held, that is highly unlikely.

Plays a bit like…His versatility recalls Spain and Bayern midfielder Javi Martinez, while he also follows a tradition of technically elegant midfielders or defenders like club legend Franz Beckenbauer.

Hyypia: Why Kopites will love Emre Can

Brendan Rodgers' latest summer signing, Emre Can, has received a glowing seal of approval after his move to Merseyside by the Liverpool legend that managed him last season.

Former Reds captain Sami Hyypia was the German youngster's coach at Bayer Leverkusen during a breakthrough 2013-14 campaign and therefore knows from experience the talent he possesses.

Following the confirmation of Can's transfer on Thursday, the popular Finn kindly spared a moment for an exclusive chat with Liverpoolfc.com, in which he backed the midfielder to thrive at Anfield.

Hyypia said: "Emre is one of those players that always gives 100 per cent on the pitch. He is a very dynamic player and he is quite mature physically as well.

"He is quite a technical player and he does the simple things perfectly, with 100 per cent concentration, and I think he will have a great career at Liverpool.

"With the work ethic he has, I know the Liverpool fans will love him. He needs to make this next step forward in his career and Liverpool is a great club for him to continue to improve.

"He's also very skilful and he can play it very simple. I think he suits the Liverpool style of play and physically he can compete in the Premier League for sure.

"I was very happy for him to see him sign for Liverpool and I'm looking forward to watching him in the Premier League."

The Istanbul hero also welcomed the return of Champions League football to Anfield this term, insisting that Rodgers' charges are more than capable of holding their own in the competition.

He added: "It's great to see Liverpool back in the Champions League, where they belong. Anfield is a very special place, especially on a Champions League night, as I know well."

On a personal level, Hyypia will start the 2014-15 season with a new challenge, having taken charge of Championship side Brighton. It's an opportunity he is relishing.

He said: "I have this new challenge with Brighton and we are working hard and will give it all we can to reach our targets and hopefully one day we will meet Liverpool in the Premier League."
