He could be as good as anyone at his peak, but even if this is as good as he gets, he’s an excellent centre back.

It's probably a 50-50 situation with Matip now, they are both elite. He's so, so good. I think he'll start the CL final for his pace on that side helping Trent with Vinicius, which would be heartbreaking for Joel but one of them has to miss out.

Could be that both play and Vooveedee misses out. If that were to happen I wouldn't be filled with dread. Be nice to be able to rest him every now and then next season

looks a beast doesn't he. Physically dominates everyone and he will learn from a top class cultured CB in Matip and a world class CB in Virgil. 3 absolutely fantastic options we have there.
I think Konate has the pace on Matip and Vinicus is a flier but Matip has turned into one of the most progressive CBs in a football, is no slouch and takes so much pressure off our defence by bringing the ball out to and past the half line. It's a real rarity in football for a cb to do that. It really seems something that he has specifically added to his game and so important to push us up the pitch. He's co composed, if ungainly looking and chipping in more with his attacking returns. This is what an injury free Joel Matip looks like, long may it continurm

Matip needs to spend an hour a day after training doing some long range shooting practice, cos the number of times his mazy dribbles leave him in a perfect shooting position only for him to instead lay the ball out wide is amazing...got to be worth a pop once in a while.

was literally saying this to my mates yesterday, he pushes so far up that alot of the time has 3/4 up the pitch it's amazing. We don't shoot enough outside the box at the best times. Diaz is one player that seems to be trying that which is great to see.

What's Daniel Agger up to at the moment. He'd be the best trainer

Matip reminds me of Agger is that way so progressive and injury prone I suppose, slaloms out of defence and gets us up most of the pitch, pushes team back. Unfortunately I don't hink he possesses the strike of Agger although it might be hilarious to see him try take a 30 yarder

Think Agger's shooting accuracy and goal threat is a tad exaggerated with hindsight.
He scored nine league goals for us from 175 games. Matip is already on 8 from 125 games. VVD has 13 from 129 games.

I don't think Agger and Matip are comparable from a technical or shooting point of view, my comment was in jest referring to how ungainly Matip looks on times. I'm talking more so from them both being" progressive CB's, CB's who can break the lines and push us higher up the pitch and I would argue that this season Matip is more progressive than Agger ever was. For me, Matip was a much better "defender" than Agger ever was.

Always thought Agger was a bit over rated imo as you don't see many ball playing CB's out there which he was, unfortunately he wasn't the best defender.

Yeah I would think the same and also say that he is a better footballer full stop. Matip this season has been at VVD's level.
Matip is a bit funny at times as he looks quite gangly, but he runs or used to run (not been over in a while so don't know which) in Sefton Park at times, and if he goes by you you notice pretty quickly that he is a unit. He has that sort of frame that from a distance looks thin but up close he is put together in a manner similar to a younger Lenox Lewis, all lean muscle.
Big part of why you rarely see him bullied by strong forwards or notice him having difficulties with them.
Only thing I wish he had more of in his locker is a bit more aggression/forwardness in terms of being a vocal leader/organiser at the back, but, much like when he was like at Schalke, he has a Keeper and CB partner looking after that side of things around him.
The scary thing, for other teams, is that we have a young guy in Konate who may well have the potential to be better than either of VVD or Matip in a few years time.

Yeah. Our MOM.
I still rate Matip slightly ahead as he is a but more cultured with the ball... But there is not much in it. 3 world class centrebacks. We still have the best backline in the world. Top class backup too apart from Trent.

On tonight's evidence Konate can add that to his game. He went on a couple of runs bringing the ball out of defence, and had a couple of other instances where he feigned one way while under pressure to create some space. If he does develop the technical side of his game the sky is the limit when added to his physical attributes.

Was worried when I saw his name but he gave me the best moments of a forgettable game. Made Vini and Benz visibly shit their pants whenever he was near.

Klopp said it was tactical as he is quicker than Matip. Clearly he provided cover for TAA to get forward. I think we will see him rotate as required. A good problem to have.

No, but he has potential.
Maybe he will one day Cruyff turn Zlatan in his own box. Until then he will have to console himself as merely very, very good.

He was partially to blame for the 'disallowed' goal. But, that apart, yes excellent.
