Barcelona
I don’t see a thread for them - I guess it was always linked to the Messi one. As they are such a basket case they need their own one
Ronnie the Red got the bullet and they drew against Alaves last night...... this is scary though

Team spirit and loyalty to your mates is rife there obviously

I'm finding it hard to dance on Barcelona's grave. Sure they've been mismanaged financially and some players are unpleasant etc but is their ownership model not a bit of a beacon in a sea of slave-owning billionaires? I'd far prefer them to succeed than fuckin PSG or Newcastle. Unless I've totally misunderstood their ownership model.

Their ownership model in principle is laudable but they do have strong ties with those you call the slave owning billionaires, they just have their "fan owned" business model to muddy the waters.
Think they are a case of a club wating to have the higher moral ground regarding ownership but still get the Middle Eastern money at the same time.

i agree completely.... covid has screwed them over and their huge attendances has really hit their income......this coupled with terrible purchases in the transfer market has totally shafted them.
They had the perfect model when Pep was there - and just after that too. Their academy was producing most of their first team and they would supplement that with good purchases. But even back then their transfers were really hit and miss then - but when they bought badly back then, it didn't really matter as much as they had some brilliant players coming through their youth system.....so even if high profile signings didn't work out, it didn't matter
Some of the money wasted over the years was unreal though:
Pjanic - 54m
Trincao - 28m
Greizmann - 108m
Neto - 23m
Malcom - 38m
Coutinho - 140m
Dembele - 120m
Paulinho - 36m
Semedo - 32m
Andre Gomes - 33m
Alcacer - 27m
Turan - 30m
Mathieu - 18m
Vermaelen - 10m
Alex Song - 17m
Chygrynskyi - 22.5m
Kerrison - 12.6m
Chygrynskyi - 22.5m
Is approaching 800m they have spent on transfers over the last 10-12 years that they may as well not have bothered spending

They used to be gold standard. Fan owned and never sold the shirt, then, fan owned and sold the shirt to UNICEF. Now, fan owned and as mentioned troubling Saudi connections.

If i recall they didn't receive any cash for the UNICEF sponsorship. It was merely paving the way for the big money Middle East / Japanese shirt sponsorships that followed.
Not sure what say the members got in the shirt sponsorship deals.
The German clubs have the ideal model for ownership. Well apart from RB. They're a fucking abomination. A successful version of other abominations like MK Dons and Airdrie United

It all stemmed from Neymar going to PSG - that meant they weren’t the biggest fish in the pond and their vanity clouded their judgement. They got €200m cash for Neymar - normally transfer are paid in installments and the blew it like a drunken sailor.
You could say that their big signings looked good - Dembele, Griezemann and Coutinho being the main ones. Barca were at their best when they used their world class academy and supplement with big names…… they need to get their identity back

They have banked so much on his arrival over the years.
Gives me the feeling that it won't work out how they want, too hyped up.
I've only seen a few interviews of him but he's pretty arrogant
Thinks nobody plays the game like barca do, despite the fact that their style is inspired by ajax.

I really liked Xavi as a player and from what I’ve seen of him as a coach his team in Qatar played the ‘ Barca’ way. It’s worth saying that his side were the richest team in the league so they had a huge advantage
This will all depend on the expectations of the fan base and the board. If they think they should win the league/champions league in the next few years then he’s set up to fail.
Barca are €1.5 billion in debt - they need to clear that and they will need full houses in the Nou Camp + champions league football to enable that. They have a core of really good young players - Gavi, Pedri, Fati.......they need to give Xavi time and use the academy. The older players on big money need to be phased out - Pique, Alba, Busquets etc and they need to get rid of the remaining flops Dembele, Pjanic, Lengelet etc
Because it’s Xavi you’d expect him to have more patience than others but Barca fans are fickle are used to winning. Top 4 and debt reduction is a big mindset change for them. Like others I used to admire what they stood for but they became a basket case over the last while - it will be an interesting watch to see how/if they recover

Aspas scored a 96th minute equaliser today making it a 3-3 draw with Celta Vigo. Barca in 9th in La Liga.

There will be some creative accountancy being carried out to allude to some expenses being accrued by the player!

Barcelona could terminate Samuel Umtiti's contract. The French defender, 28, has failed to agree a cut to his £208,000-per-week salary amid the club's financial struggles. (Sport, in Spanish)
|
How does that even work? Just pay his contract out ? How would they be better off as they’d still have to pay someone to fill the spot he’d vacate

They could terminate his contract on grounds of "unreasonable behaviour" or summat like that...They will find summat to get rid!

all he has to do is channel his inner Winston Bogarde and make sure he turns up to training on time every day....... and if they try to terminate his contract, then he has to channel his inner Jimmy Conway and just keep saying....."Fuck you....pay me"

Caught the last ten minutes of the Barca game. Got caught twice at the back 2 v 1 in the final minutes and the benfica lad fluffed it spectacularly.
Not a great start by Xavi.

Was an absolute shocker of a miss. Seferovic won't forget that in a hurry. Benfica still should qualify, just need to win. Doubt Barca will get a result against Bayern.
