So Barcelona clearly didn't get the crazy money they were after or it was a sensible loan fee on top of wages all along. About sub £20m all in.

Isn't the loan bad news for Liverpool? I remember a large chunk of the fee being based on appearances/success etc. That all goes unpaid now he's playing for Bayern.

Read somewhere the other day, they only owe us about £5m left of the full fee.

We should agree to sign him for 30m if he agrees to half his salary. Then sell him somewhere else for 40m. Rinse them even more.

I don't think we did rinse them. They paid market value, Coutinho is one of the best players on the planet period.
He will show this again at FC Bayern.

How does he get to that figure if the loan fee was "only" €8.5m? (Quoting Nev's earlier post).

That was the fee Bayern paid after the English window closed, Barca chanced their arm with prem clubs before that.

yeah. It seems they asked double from prem clubs and then halved it for the rest of Europe.
That early window for the PL needs to stop.

144 million or whatever it was , and missed out on 2 champions league finals.
Can't believe he was a flop at Barca either, thought he would tear it up.

If you go to Barca as a big signing it’s always going to be tricky to figure out how you fit in alongside Messi.
You could say the same of Dembele. Big signing and he’s done fuck all. Suarez managed to forge a path, but even then I’m sure he struggled first couple of months until they changed formation.
How do you justify the third biggest transfer fee of all time when you know you aren’t the star player in the team? Tricky.

I don't think that 21 goals and 12 assists in all comps is a terrible return statistically for him in 72 games. But it just didn't look right. It's the same as Zlatan, on paper at Barca he was fine, but it didn't quite click on the pitch. I'm not sure of his goal return, but it was better than 1 in 2 and everyone said he was shit and a flop. They also won the league both times, people are really fickle though.
Regardless, Coutinho is a great player and regardless of what people feel toward him in a personal capacity doesn't change that. We did well to get the fee we did, but as I've said before, would definitely take him back if the conditions were right.

Yep
Barca is all about getting the best from Messi and if you can't fit that model you are fucked. Many big players have bombed -Phil and Zlatan + others have felt the need to go solo Neymar.
Barca's biggest problem is La Masia is not producing the right calibre of player. Messi Pique and Busquests are the only regulars with Roberto playing a bit part. In the past they had to supplement 7/8 first teamers with a couple of stars which they typically recruited well. Now they need to buy full sides and many of those can't integrate with Messi.
When he finally retires they'll be half the side they are now.

Always think of playing David Villa on the left wing. He found a way to make it work eventually, but he probably could have scored 20+ league goals a season for 3-5 more seasons if he had stayed at Valencia or joined another team that played him in his natural position and set up for him.

Villa was one of their big successes with his versatility and willingness to sacrifice himself for the team. It helped that he played with the majority of the team with the national squad though

Coutinho was never a great player. he is a player that had some great moments, and occasionally turned in some mom performances.
Where was he in our motm player of the year tables?
Won in 2015 and 2017. Meh.

Really? He was touted as an Iniesta replacement. If anyone had seen Iniesta play and Coutinho play you would immediately think, nah! Not happening.
Thankfully, the Barça scouting team hadn't seen how either Iniesta played, or Coutinho.

I thought he was brilliant for us and would be ideal for Barca and their style of play.
Just goes to show certain players cant adapt no matter how good they are.

I was just coming in here to post if he's getting much game time as he was a 90th minute sub today
Not playing much I take it? £100m to Utd next then, he'd really stink the place out there with his lack of work rate

He is a great player. In his last 18 months for us he was phenomenal hence the fee.
He's been mismanaged since. He'd be amazing again in this Klopp side.

He was a great player when we he had the ball, but often he didnt do the graft when we were pressing.
Some games he did tackle back and it was a revelation to see him putting the graft in, and knowing he could play a better all round game made it even more frustrating when he wanted to walk around letting his team mates do the hard yards.
Too much billy big bollocks and a superstar now, fuck him.

I don't ever recall him not putting the yards in - and would argue nobody stays in a klopp team if they can't at least do that.

Early days with us I seem to recall a lack of effort in tracking back but I think Klopp sorted that out.
