Cricket Scotland: November 6, 2013 - Following recent research carried out by the International Cricket Council, Cricket Scotland has revealed the findings as the sport continues to establish itself as one of the countries leading summer sports.
The study compared paricipation and coaching figures from 2008 to 2013, which emphasised how the game has grown across all facets of the game in Scotland in recent years.

The growth shows little signs of slowing down either; participation levels are currently on the rise and have almost doubled over five years – now sitting at 57,525. This has been achieved, in part, thanks to programmes put in place by Cricket Scotland Development Team and the hard work of the volunteers and coaches who give up thousands of hours of their own time to promote and improve the standard of cricket in this country.

Scotland, now ranked second in the ICC Development scorecard for all non-full member countries, can boast having the most qualified and active coaches outwith the Test playing nations. Due to the continued drive and enthusiasm throughout the country, the number of active coaches has increased to 1,665 - in comparison to 2009 when there were only 375.

Facilities continue to increase with the number of turf pitches rising in Scotland over the last five years to 173 across the country, compared to 154 in 2008 –the highest number of turf pitches in any of the affiliate and associate countries.

Hard work from the Scottish Cricket Officials Association (SCOA), along with Cricket Scotland and the regional associations, has seen an increase in active umpires by 20%, the spirit of cricket continues to be instilled into the game and its players around the country.

Cricket Scotland’s participation aim ‘More players playing the game regularly in a network of strong clubs supported by well-trained and motivated people’ - is certainly showing signs of being achieved.
The work with partners Cricket Factory has enabled Cricket Scotland to increase its visibility at numerous high profile events, such as the Festival Square Cricket Takeover and the Cowal Highland Gathering, which has taken cricket to new and wider audiences.

“It is really pleasing seeing these results, and it it’s testament to those who regularly give up their own time to ensure the game grows in this country.” said Cricket Scotland Head of Participation Steve Paige.

“We take great confidence in knowing that the work of our dedicated volunteers, together with our staff, is having a positive impact on helping our clubs thrive with the best possible facilities and knowledgeable coaches.”

Haha.

They do play under lights with the white ball but cricket is a game of wonderful and very subtle nuances and with the red ball, i.e. real cricket, it doesn't work under lights.

But you probably knew that

I bet they refuse to give them saucers for their tea and leave the icing sugar off their scones just to stoke it up a bit further

Their spinner (Hollands?) vs KP should be fun. The Aussie A bowlers are the definition of ordinary.

I've been to one. Admittedly it was as a security guard / steward working for Burns Security when I was at Uni, but it did nothing but stoke up the flames of antipathy.

One of my jobs was to look out for villains who might swipe stuff from the car park, but we used to hide in between the cars drinking warm Fosters and get caned. We weren't allowed to take off our american cop style hats either, even when the weather was sweltering. I ended up with sunburn that stopped just above my eyebrows.

I watched the start of Roots innings and he looked in good touch. Raced to 20 at about a run a ball.

I think that's the top 6 settled, but I don't think England know their bowling lineup yet. It'll all come down to the last warm up game.

Prior looking a doubt for the first test with a calf problem.

Huge boost to the Aussies if Bairstow has to play.

Yep Prior would be a massive miss. Nightmare really. Also like their squad. Mitchell Johnson anywhere near his best will be their most threatening and destructive bowler.

I'm still very confident. The Aussies batting line up is shit and ours is in good form. They've got some good bowlers but most them are injured, and as for Mitch? He's not played well with the red ball for a long time.

Lets smash them

I loath Lehman. Hope he is humiliated and sacked.

Yes and no, yes he is hugely influential and when on form he's the best in the world, but he offered nothing with the bat last summer and had a very average time of it with the gloves.... and we still won 3 nil. Bairstow will easily be able to match Priors recent form.

He'll be the match winner in my opinion, He'll be up for it, its just if he can channel it correctly.

Bailey is another good pick - Me thinks England might struggle this winter.

Bailey's record in red ball cricket is poor to say the least. Only recently in a domestic game he got completely worked over by Ryan Harris and made to look a complete amateur.

As for Johnson, well, yes he is dangerous, but for every dangerous player they have, we have 2 or 3. We are massive favourites.

It's become a (personal) tradition for me now to get drunk on Christmas Day and watch the Boxing Day test start off at 11pm.

Like you I will have all the intentions to stay up but it will go on its arse after the first half an hour.

Realistically the weekends will by my only chance until xmas.

Wanted to get a few mates together to watch a full nights play but that is proving to be a non starter.

I see most play starts midnight our time. So with 8ish hours of play, it'll be finishing off around 8am. Maybe I'll catch a bit of TMS in the car on the way in if I leave early.

Softer red ball with kookaburra which makes me think Bailey will do well! Clarke and Watson will do well, which makes me think this will be close
