Liverpool v Brentford (PL) home
Sunday 2pm
Need to be picking up three points here, and need some sort of formation spark. Brentford try and play a bit dont they? That might help.
An early goal or the natives will become frustrated and restless.
Shame Div is injured.
I guess we go with :
Jota/Taki/Bobby
Unless we unleash Gordon..???

i would seriously consider changing the system
Hendo/Fab centre mid
Jones left
Gordon/Ox right
Bobby behind Jota

I would rather Gordon got a go than Taki tbh. More naturally suited to playing in the front 3, and Taki is too similar to Bobby style wise so fuck it, chuck him in. Bit of variety and unpredictability.

Brentford are big on pressing. And we’ve been shit or at least dropped points against all the pressing teams we’ve come up against this season. Including Brentford.
We also always seem to play fellow pressing teams when most of our best press resistant midfielders are missing. Which is the case again with only Fabinho available for this one.

This will be my fourth game at Anfield this season, not looking forward to it to be honest. I think it's going to be a tough one.
My last game will be Watford in April, then that's it, I've decided to bow out on that one. My first match was way back in 97 against SK Brann with a young Tore Andre Flo before his move to Chelsea. I was 23 years old. I've been to some crackers over the years and have some great memories, the finest being a couple of crazy nights in Barcelona to watch Riise and Bellamy score two at the Camp Nou in 07.
Things are just getting too expensive now, inflation is crazy and I just can't stand the journey these days. Add to that the money in the game, players demandig £400k a week and the corruption at City and Chelsea and I've decided now is as good a time as any. I'm done.
Cool story bro!

Think it should be more a case of changing some of the personnel within the system rather than changing the way we set up. Think trying to change too much in the style of how we play would be a risk, especially against a team that presses. We would need to be good at using a low block to frustrate a press ( that is if we were not going out to try and impose our own press) and I do not think that is something we would be very good at tbh given how we like to use our full backs in advanced positions and how we like to keep a high line.
Get more mobile players into the centre where possible but also stop dropping players into positions they are not suited to (Like Minamino being used as a wide left forward )
Jones I would have in the middle with Fabinho and Henderson. Brentford are going to press the hell out of us, especially in the centre of the pitch so we need to be able to both counter press and resist a press where possible and Jones, whilst not press resistent in the way that Thiago or Keita are, is still pretty good against a press.
Gordon I would take a punt on out wide. Lad has pace and decent control. Let him try to stretch the play on our right side and prevent their full back from having a slower player to contend with and force them to have to track back or double up on their left side.
Jota I would put on our left for the same reason. He has pace, he can be direct and he can stay wide or cut in. Plus he has a bit of needle to his play.
Bobby I would play in the centre of attack and tell him not to drop too deep, instead to play more like a traditional number nine for the game.
Our back line picks itself for the most part thanks to there being no injuries, and has the luxury of being able to drop in Tsimikas if we think Robertson is tired/off form. Same applies to who partners VVD. Do we rest Matip after he played midweek and go for more pace in our back line in Gomez or go with a mix of pace and power in Konate. Might go with Konate if Matip needs that break.

People thought we could win the league and are now advocating Gordon in a PL game. He's a way off that level and experience.
We can't allow Milner another start, I'd be tempted to start with Ox in midfield and Jones up front.

Well with regards to Gordon ( or someone like Blair for that matter), we could either gamble on a young player getting tried in his natural position or try to use a slower player in the role that is not a natural in the position.
Yes Gordon is raw and lacking experience at this level, but the flip side is that he would be less predictable to play against than putting the likes of Chamberlain out wide right and would bring pace to the position.
I do not expect him to start as I fully expect to see a CM like Chamberlain used or Minamino being used out wide again.
maybe a curveball like trying Williams there could be tried.

Yeah, it's a bit of a problem for sure. Bobby, Ox, Minamino are too slow for that role. Williams isn't a bad option tbf.
It's a shame we couldn't forsee this problem and the midfield issues in the summer when they were glaring problems.

Is Origi back? I know people have been frustrated by him at times but at least he has a bit of pace, I really dread a front three of Jota, Firmino and Minamino

I think with the strikers we have available at present we are better with Jota in the middle. So where that leaves Bobby I don’t know cause he’s ineffective out wide. Maybe
Minamino or Jones , Jota. Gordon & bring Bobby off the bench for young Gordon & shuffle the front three.

Whichever team Jurgen picks, it needs some fucking energy and press from the start and not to fade into a complete shambles after fifteen minutes…
We start brightly in most games but recently the spark has faded quickly and we’ve become alarmingly disjointed….
Need to score a brace early and then play possession football and get everyone’s eye in… (old school for playing better, more often)

Better to play bobby as one of the advanced midfielders to win the press and feed the ball.

Think in this game more than a lot it needs that as Brentford will be trying to do the exact same from he first whistle.
I think it is going to be a very ugly game to watch today but in order to match and hopefuly overcome their press we will have to be prepared to work hard and out press their pressing game.
Where I see us potentially having a problem is if we take a lead (feels strange to be calling taking the lead a problem) as we seem to have lost the ability to then hold the ball and dictate the tempo so the sting is taking out of a game after we score.

Going to be relying on Jota plus the full backs for any pace in attack today.
Wonder if it is Chamberlain in the attack and Jones in midfield or the other way around.

Not too sure about how pace is really important when you have most of the ball and teams defend in a low block. There is no space to run into. Need quick thinking and movement, variety in play and speed in the passing. These are more important IMO.

Brentford rarely defend using a low block though. They press like we do and they go with a high line so pace would be nice to exploit it

Just twigged we have almost the same starting XI as the last time we played Brentford.
Just Chamberlain and Bobby in for Mane and Salah and the other nine are the same.

Ah, when they played us they were really direct and defended quite low I thought. Didn’t really press.
Ox has got pace and Jota is no slouch, so we’ll see.

So blunt. Don't look like scoring from open play. Hooking the ball into the middle more often than not and any success there will have to be super accurate as they've three big fellas getting their head on everything.
