Club Bruges to be named champions as Belgian Pro League cancelled

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52138270

The Belgian Pro League is set to become the first major European league to be cancelled because of coronavirus.

Club Bruges will be declared champions with the current league table set to stand.

There was one match of the regular season remaining when the league was suspended, with play-offs due to decide the top positions.

Where could someone get hold of the red flares if they wanted to? Seen smoke bombs but not the flares everyone sets off.

That's a cracking shirt, they should licence it to B&H Albion and one team in every league to raise money for children's charities

Not sure where the dolphin would tie in with The Baggies but they could replace it with a song thrush!

I'll stick my neck out so Yozza isn't on his own. I didn't think of the rainbow connection for Brighton - just thought they play in blue and are by the sea

Amnesty International warns Premier League over Newcastle takeover.

The Premier League "risks becoming a patsy" unless it looks at Saudi Arabia's human rights record as a possible takeover of Newcastle United moves nearer, according to Amnesty International.

A Saudi-backed consortium involving Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is reportedly on the verge of buying the Tyneside club for about £300m.

The Premier League must decide whether the group of investors backed by Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund meets its owners' and directors' test.

"I believe there are serious questions to address in determining whether the owners and directors of the company seeking to acquire NUFC are meeting standards that can protect the reputation and image of the game," Amnesty UK director Kate Allen said in a letter to Premier League chief executive Richard Masters.

Like the prem league moneymen ($$$) give a fuck.... especially with the cost of covid.

Listened to a great podcast by football writers earlier & they acknowledged the league wouldn't give a damn about the brand against the influx of new blood money to appease the deficit

I still think the money aspect will force it to complete. They might knock off a few matches at the end if it won't affect relegation of European qualification - mid table nothing battles or if a team was too far adrift and had to play us or City they don't need to play it.

Eredivisie: Dutch top flight likely to be cancelled after major events ban extended

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52376543

The Dutch Football Association “intends not to continue” the Eredivisie season after the national government extended a ban on major events until 1 September because of coronavirus.

Ajax and AZ Alkmaar are leading the Dutch top flight level on points after 26 games, with Ajax ahead on goal difference.

No, because none of the clubs could afford to lose the tv money, and possibly sponsorship and prize money.

I doubr the dutch league is so dependent on tv money.

Still dont undetstand the point of ending the season incompkete and starting another one, which could get cancelled. The game would lose interest and integrity. Nobody is going to put the effort in on and off the pitch.

Its madness to rush to start the new season. One player comes down as symptomatic and the whole squad is likely to need to isolate due to the close proximity of the training sessions. That will delay that season and risk its completion too. Make this the 20019/2021 if needed and start 'next' season in 2021 running to Qatar.

Sort of on topic.

An iconic football stadium quiz.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52394131

Try and ignore the clues as they often give the answer away without needing the picture.

Question for all of those fans who saw the teams of the 70s and 80s.

As I wasn’t alive to see these teams, it’s been really interesting to watch some of their games (many on tv now because no new sport).

One thing that struck me was just how much quicker and more technical the average prem player has become. I’d love to see what would happen if you even chucked an average player from a more recent era into those games e.g a Wayne routledge.

Of course there are still those players who were very quick and technically gifted and had they played in this era with better pitches and better sports science knowledge they’d probably tear it up e.g Beardsley - who by the way, could not look less of an athlete until you see him on the ball.

But there’s also the likes of Steve Nicol, I can understand why he was thought of as good in his era but there’s no way he’d make it in today’s game at the top level, he just wouldn’t be technically strong enough. Half the time it looked as though he was going to fall over But somehow didn’t. There’s also the fact that you really clearly see that that definition of a right back and the decision making he should make is just totally different.

Which begs the question, how relevant is their insight and analysis on today’s game?

I last watched a game in the 80s and of the LFC team, the players that really stood out to me were Barnes, Beardsley, Haughton, McMahon. Rush wasn’t playing that game but him as well. Those players would make it in today’s game imo but the rest I’m not sure. Alan Hansen was a rake but I suppose he could bulk up. in the other games i saw Souness, Dalglish and Molby stood out.

The massive caveat here is I’ve only seen about 3-4 full games so maybe players were having very good or very bad individual days.

hence why I’d like to know the thoughts of fans who lived through the era and saw the team. Am i being too harsh? Who do you think would make it in today’s game? Is it just impossible to compare eras?
