I heard Barnes on the radio say much the same.... It is almost impossible to comment as a white person. I guess you admire the honesty, but it was a staggering statement and an unusual way to sell his film.

There was another black person on (I missed the start so couldnt tell you who it was) who was less forgiving and said she will never watch anther Liam Neeson film.

There is context to Liam Neesons statement. But. Fucking hell it was quite an admission.

I think it's an important admission and shows people's views and attitudes can change.

That is true.

But... In the age of Social Media mud sticks. And Neeson will most likely be stuck with this for the rest of his days. I fail to see what he gains from it personally. It was mentioned out of context having been asked about a time he might have sought revenge, and not as if he was crusading for racial equality. No idea how t will play out for him now, as not everyone is as nuanced in their opinion as John Barnes.

You mean with his wife?

That was horrific obviously. But having the entire world know you would have happily murdered any random black person is hardly a fantastic state of affairs. If he had an agenda in tackling race matters then fair enough, I think he slipped up in admitting it.

Yep.

Quote:
In a remarkable new interview, the actor Liam Neeson has claimed that he reacted to the rape of someone to whom he was close by loitering outside a pub for a week wanting to murder a black person.

Neeson, whose career for the past 15 years has been defined by a series of revenge thrillers, was speaking to promote the latest, Cold Pursuit, in which he plays a man avenging the murder of his son.

In the interview for the Independent, Neeson says he understood the “primal” motivation his character feels. “God forbid you’ve ever had a member of your family hurt under criminal conditions,” he said, before recounting the story of a time, many years ago, when he returned from overseas to discover that a woman he knew well – he did not specify if she was a friend or a family member – had been raped.“But my immediate reaction was … I asked, did she know who it was? No. What colour were they? She said it was a black person.”

Neeson continued: “I went up and down areas with a cosh, hoping I’d be approached by somebody – I’m ashamed to say that – and I did it for maybe a week, hoping some ‘black bastard’ would come out of a pub and have a go at me about something, you know? So that I could … kill him.”

Neeson declines to name the victim and withholds details to protect their anonymity.

“It took me a week, maybe a week-and-a-half, to go through that,” he continues. “She would say, ‘Where are you going?’ and I would say, ‘I’m just going out for a walk.’ ‘What’s wrong?’ ‘No, no, nothing’s wrong.’”

The interviewer gives every indication that Neeson is conscious of the gravity of what he is saying. She quotes him as saying: “It was horrible, horrible, when I think back, that I did that. And I’ve never admitted that, and I’m saying it to a journalist. God forbid.”

His breath reportedly “trembles” as he continues: “It’s awful. But I did learn a lesson from it, when I eventually thought, ‘What the fuck are you doing?’”

Why ask what colour of skin he had and then go and look to go and hunt based on that? It’s revealing. Surely hunting another rapist and then killing them would be a more appropriate outlet for his wrath?

He was just a big racist looking to fight black folk.

Perhaps he was. Not sure it's relevant now unless people can't change. A long time has passed, his social circle and experience of life is so much greater now. It's a bizarre admission. But at least he's being honest. He didn't commit a crime so all's well that ends well.

I agree.

I think, for his own good, he should clarify. So far he hasn’t really explained his current POV. Because so far he has said he set out to kill an (any) innocent black person.

That’s extreme.

Not quite what he said. He essentially said he wanted someone to start on him as he walked about the streets of certain neighbourhoods. So he went looking for trouble yes, but I don't think someone who starts on him could be classed as innocent?

If he wanted to attack any black person, innocent or not, I think he could have done so. However, his objective was to retaliate (with extreme prejudice) to an attack on him.

"kill him" was the quote.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-47143399

The audio is in that link.

As anecdotes go, it's at best ill-judged and i doubt very much, a premeditated comment. The key things is this was an angry man who finally came to and i would like think has grown up and evolved as an adult. The context of NI as a society is interesting, it doesn't mitigate racism but violence was certainly desensitised among many white males.

Fucking right. Its about as sensational as it gets. It is definitely the foundation of a much needed conversation around race and racism and particularly latent racism.

I agree he definitely didn't plan to say it and sparking a valuable debate or not he must surely regret it on a personal level. Imagine what his family and kids must be thinking.

I read an article that supposed, if his friend had said that her rapist was white would he have just gone outside and shot himself in the head?

French club Nantes have demanded payment from Cardiff City over the £15m transfer of Emiliano Sala, BBC Wales has learned.
