International Footy (Qualifiers, Nations League, genereal discussion)

Draw made earlier on:-

England get Croatia & Spain in Group 4 of League A

Republic of Ireland get Denmark & Wales...some payback due there either way!

Northern Ireland get Bosnia & Austria

Scotland get Israel & Albania

Not getting into the mechanics of how this works but the BBC website have done a decent job of it

http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/42803594

WTF?

Quote:
The actual qualification process for Euro 2020 has been simplified, with the top two nations in the 10 groups claiming a place in the finals.

The seedings will be determined by how teams performed in the preceding Nations League and the 10 fixtures will be wedged into an eight-month window from March-November 2019.

However, that leaves four places at the finals - which will be held in 12 host cities around the continent - still to be filled.

The four group winners in each tier will then play-off in March for a first crack at claiming one of those four vacant spots.

Should a nation already have qualified, their place will go to the next highest-ranked team from their Nations League tier. However, that will not necessarily be the runners-up in their group.

A full explanation is given in the video below...

Permanent Thread for International Football?

Hi there,

This may have cropped up before...Why is there no permanent thread/folder for international football along with General football & Liverpool?

I think it would be a decent thread/folder as to lob everything into general football is too ambiguous so while you are at that, make one for non league thread & European Football too!

More injuries. Seriously, footballers should sue UEFA for overworking them!

Is not the case that it's not more international football - just giving more meaning to games instead of pointless friendlies?

These matches are as well as qualification matches.

What they need to do is scrap qualification in the current format and do qualification matches in the off season of the non Eupos/WC years over two weeks. Club season doesn't get interrupted and I might actually watch it on a beach somewhere. Clubs could finish the season slightly earlier as there would be no interruptions.

Of course, but they're instead of a lot of the friendlies.

I cant see a problem with more competative games for the smaller nations. Itll improve their standard. Getting tonked 7-0 helps no one.

Also, Spain home and away coming up. Ill take that

International football gets a bad rep, but the recent playoff games were pretty fun. You just need to look beyond England as we always walk the qualifying.

Ignoring the usual grumpy set of old men here, I think it's a good idea and let's try and move forward with it. Usually get's a fair amount of comments and could be ideal for one thread instead of an England thread and a handfull of smaller ones.

I will rename this and let's try it out

We could start it off by discussing the draw for the Nations League that replaces friendlies for most parts and have qualification of the Euro Championship / WC in the future at stake.

A bit on the format:

http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/42719404

And the groups:

LEAGUE A

Group 1: Germany, France, Netherlands
Group 2: Belgium, Switzerland, Iceland
Group 3: Portugal, Italy, Poland
Group 4: Spain, England, Croatia

Four group winners play-off for the UEFA Nations League trophy in June 2019
Four sides that finish bottom of groups relegated to League B for 2020 edition
Top four-ranked League A teams that do not qualify for UEFA EURO 2020 enter play-offs in March 2020, with one EURO finals place on offer

LEAGUE B

Group 1: Slovakia, Ukraine, Czech Republic
Group 2: Russia, Sweden, Turkey
Group 3: Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Northern Ireland
Group 4: Wales, Republic of Ireland, Denmark

Four group winners promoted to League A for 2020 edition
Four sides that finish bottom of groups relegated to League C for 2020 edition
Top four-ranked League B teams that do not qualify for UEFA EURO 2020 enter play-offs in March 2020, with one EURO finals place on offer

LEAGUE C

Group 1: Scotland, Albania, Israel
Group 2: Hungary, Greece, Finland, Estonia
Group 3: Slovenia, Norway, Bulgaria, Cyprus
Group 4: Romania, Serbia, Montenegro, Lithuania

Four group winners promoted to League B for 2020 edition
Four sides that finish bottom of groups relegated to League D for 2020 edition
Top four-ranked League C teams that do not qualify for UEFA EURO 2020 enter play-offs in March 2020, with one EURO finals place on offer

LEAGUE D

Group 1: Georgia, Latvia, Kazakhstan, Andorra
Group 2: Belarus, Luxembourg, Moldova, San Marino
Group 3: Azerbaijan, Faroe Islands, Malta, Kosovo
Group 4: FYR Macedonia, Armenia, Liechtenstein, Gibraltar

Four group winners promoted to League C for 2020 edition
Top four-ranked League C teams that do not qualify for UEFA EURO 2020 enter play-offs in March 2020, with one EURO finals place on offer

Sancho and Maddison rumoured to be in too.

Couldn't give a fuck obviously ...but England could have some team in a few years.

The likes of Trent, Gomez, Foden, Maddison, Mount, that Mason Greenwood at United, Sancho, Brewster....probably the most talented group of youngsters for years.

Well deserved for Sancho, another assist last night. Winks is a bum.

These breed seem technically on another level to previous failures though.

Iceland managed a draw away to France, not newsworthy really, but the Icelandic players were in awe of Mbappe who turned the game after coming on, they said they have never seen anything like him, the way he changes direction at speed and the sheer pace, Burnley's Gudmundsson just said Mbappe is playing something else entirely.

Watched that game - Holland going full faith in youth and they have some talent coming through.

De Ligt was superb beside VVD
De Jong is going to be an absolute worldie in midfield
Dumfries at RB looked excellent
Bergwijn Up front we’ve been linked to
Depay still young and putting up big numbers for Lyon

We need Gini and VVD to ‘sell’ Liverpool to a few of them.
