ICC Trophy and England's Summer Tests

So its the Semi Final of the ICC Trophy today. England v Pakistan and India v Bangladesh. Depending what Pakistan turn up it should be a cracking game.

Then 2/3 weeks time a 4 Test Series starts against South Africa

Tee, as much as it hurts me to say it, the best team won, your boys were unrecognisable from the team that we stuffed in the first group game.

Future looks good which is pretty damn amazing considering the ongoing ban in Pakistan. The bowling department looks untouchable and how good will Aamir be....

If it's any consolation, our Indian brothers are still the benchmark.

Currently 24/2. Not the best start at all.

The Jennings LBW sounds unlucky, possibly pitching outside and not hitting. No review though.

Great start for SA. 30/3 now. Ballance tells Jennings not to review, then appeals when he's completely plum

Great stuff wasn't it.

Stokes has gone. Root still plodding along and looks a bit more stable now - was all over the place this morning. Nerves probably a factor.

How long will they persevere with Ballance this time round?

I know he's scored heavily in county cricket this year (and previously) but standing right on your stumps and barely moving your feet forward is never going to work. Clearly he has a pretty decent eye but it seems staggering that he hasn't altered his technique - or been helped / persuaded to do so.

I was an advocate of Ballance early on but it seems he's one of those who falls into that gap that is too good for County cricket but not a Test level bat. I think they thought he'd be another Trott. No chance. Next!

Yeah - sadly doesn't look to have what it takes at International Level. You know as soon as he goes back to Yorkshire he will be scoring runs.

Who's next? Stoneman is obviously close to a call up.

Dreadful start to the day.

Couple of early wickets with Root & Dawson going down early.

Broad would have been out too if Elgar didn't inexplicably refuse to review. I'm a little pissed off that they didn't let (force) Amla - who is an experienced test captain take the captaincy for this game. I know he doesn't want it, but it's one game until du Plessis would be back. Dropped catches, no balls and reviews have proven costly. If we can get these last few wickets cheaply the scoreboard isn't a disaster but it's frustrating because this innings could have put SA in a match winning position when England were 70/4

Would have been nice to get up to 450 before they batted. Looking unlikely.

Depends on Ali, he's timing it like a dream. He won't need to get too many away to take the scoreboard away from SA.

The Durham left hander? He can't be especially young any more.

I'm a bit worried about Jennings as well as Ballance to be honest, he also seems to have technical deficiencies which isn't what you want in an opener. I know there have been those who have succeeded in spite of this (Trescothic for one) but I'm old fashioned and prefer my openers to be Boycottesque in their technique.

I know young Hameed can't buy a run at the moment but I think that's because he's tried to become expansive. I'd have kept him involved and let him get some tests under his belt before the winter in Australia.

I expected England to win but that batting effort was awful. Aside from the last innings the notable difference was the catching, which needs to be corrected. Big changes for the 2nd test which should help the balance of the team. It's actually bullshit that Rabada is going to be out for this demerit points debacle. Brett Lee would have been out of every 3rd game if it was used then.

This is the team which they should go for in the next test

Kuhn
Elgar
Amla
du Plessis
de Kock
Bavuma
Morris
Philander
Maharaj
Olivier
Morkel

Duminy has been on borrowed time for a while and has zero confidence. He needs a few months to prove he can score consistently domestically. Another seamer would make a huge difference so Morris would add something. Faf and Olivier are like for like for de Bruyn and Rabada.

Normally you guys do very well with African recruitment but Ballance and Jennings are definitely not up to scratch.

Need a score from him? Then it's trapped LB for 4
