Not really, the Seahawks defence was just incredible. I gave up in the third when it was clearly all over, so can't say for the rest of the game. But the defence were just all over the place.

The Eagles have just released DeSean Jackson.

In terms of talent that's akin to us letting Sturridge go.

Apparently a myriad of reasons as to why they let him. Be interesting to see where the ends up.

It's very strange they let him go. Would love to see him at the Bears. As well as being a class Receiver they could use him as a replacement for Hester on returns.

Looks like he's going to end up signing with Washington...which as a DC fan I'm happy about, first of all because he's awesome, but also because the DC @ Philadelphia game is going to be insane now. If Jackson scores the entire stadium may implode.

Certainly seems to be the way of it, doesn't it?

I don't know, I don't mind a return to the days of being Offseason Champs. I figure they'll lose anyway, so might as well make it a spectacle while they're at it.

According to the Cleveland owner, tramps are making their draft decisions now. When all else fails.

As this is the first time I've paid any real attention to NFL, College football and the draft in the same year, I'm really looking forward to seeing how these new rookies get on with the big boys. Will Clowney be so explosive, will Manziel be a starter, or will they both get an education in how tough it is in the NFL?

Marquis Lee could be a real star, he was dynamite last year.

His knee also fell off.

He dropped like a stone in the draft as a result.

Only in American sports could that be the seventh or eighth most ridiculous name in the draft.

Seriously though, he's an immediate upgrade for an ineffectual secondary and will probably start day one. They must have been surprised as hell that he was still there when it came time to pick. I like him playing strong, close to scrimmage (he was never a ball hawk exactly at Tuscaloosa, but made shit loads of tackles), but the Packers tailor their secondary to the offense, so he might play free initially as he reads the play well.

When he fell outside the top 15 I think he had his heart set on going to Philly at 22.

Did you see his reaction when Green Bay chose him 'awww shit, i wanted to go to Philly'

But yeah, he's an immediate upgrade for the Green Bay secondary (ditto if he'd gone to Philly)

He must have known the Eagles weren't going to take a safety with a first round pick though. They wrote a large cheque for Jenkins and brought Maragos in too, plus they signed Nate Allen up for another year. They were always going to look further down the draft to fill the secondary (and got pretty good value with Ed Reynolds in the fifth).

Fairly sure they'd take Clinton-Dix over Allen

Allen has flattered to deceive since Philly wasted a second round pick on him. Testament is the one year contract and not a multi-year extension.

Despite a plethora of free agent signings in recent years the Philly secondary is still in need of some work. Patrick Chung?!

Well yeah, but Allen isn't going to start. I imagine they probably assumed Ha Ha wouldnt fall that far (higher picks ended up going to corners instead), hence their free agent moves before the draft. The trade down seemed like something they had already planned for.

I guess if he had slipped they might have taken him, but they clearly hadn't made a decision they were goi.g to take a safety as a first round priority because Deone Bucannon was still on the board, and Chip Kelly knows all about him. He had fifteen picks in college and hits like a train. The Cougars play zone blitz, so maybe they're worried about him in coverage, but you'd still take him if that was your strategy. The Eagles even took meetings with him.

I had a go on the NFL one last year, but I was pitiful at it. I'd join an Est one. It's a good way of learning who all the players are and getting into it more.

Looks like Braxton Miller will miss the season for OSU. Same shoulder he had surgery on after the Orange Bowl. Injured it during non-contact scrimmages apparently.

He's a real quarterback, but big games are a problem. He's 1-3 postseason and 0-3 in regular season games when a playoff spot is on the line head-to-head.

He'll end up with all time level stats but no rings. And he's on a $120m contract with $55m guaranteed, which is second only by a cunt hair to Brady.

But Jerry's Dallas is a fucking circus. That mad bastard went on safari years ago. They're in a crazy division, have huge distances to travel for divisional road games, have no cap room to properly restructure the roster. Better QBs than Romo would struggle to win there.

He's done alright for an undrafted 1-AA college baller.

Chargers start the season in the inevitable way! Just can't hold a lead - psychological issues?

Saw that the other night.

Apparently he's out for the season. Ouch.

Not the first player to miss games through celebrating.

Now here's an interesting question.

The NFL has a salary cap so in theory each of the 32 teams has an equal chance of winning the Super Bowl.

Competitive balance the league calls it

Would a similar thing work in the Premier League and other European leagues or do you prefer the clubs with the deepest pockets nearly always finishing in the top half dozen spots in the table at the end of each season?

I have thought about it before.

There is something to be said for a team who builds their dominance. Liverpool in 70s/80s. Man Utd 90s/00s. Its impressive how dominant these get. In both these cases it was without a massive sustained investment from a billionaire. Just luck, good management and the right alignment of other factors.

But nowadays it seems anyone can be built to do it. 5 years ago City were nothing. 10 years ago Chelsea were nothing more than a Top 4/5 side. Probably lower.

So now I think the US system would be better. Its about building coaching the best out of the players. Building a team over a long period of time.

You will always have big teams, but now and again a smaller team seems to come along and pull it out. Makes it much more interesting from that POV.

That was just a stream of consciousness. But I think I know what I mean

The NFL is an enclosed ecosystem though. There is no relegation/promotion (easier for teams to cope with lean/rebuilding periods), all teams are subject to the same tax laws, and they've got cast iron ownership and labour agreements that are effectively enforced. That would be difficult enough in a league with fluid membership like the PL (or the Football League - see QPR and their massive outstanding fines), and nigh on impossible in a cross-nation set-up.
