Ferran Torres: Man City winger explains Valencia departure

New Manchester City winger Ferran Torres says he left Valencia in part because they would not make him captain and one of their highest-paid players.

Torres, 20, said he was "excited and happy" to join City, after completing his £21m move from the La Liga side.

"I wanted to stay and I put forward the conditions to do so. They weren't above the club's means," he told Marca.

But the Spaniard added he was "sad" to leave Valencia and "very grateful" to the club he joined aged seven.

Comparisons with Ronaldo and a love of dogs - the inside story of Man City arrival Torres
Torres said as well as asking for the captaincy and a wage increase, he also wanted Valencia owner Peter Lim to be involved in any talks over a new deal with them.

"I wanted two of the three, but none were fulfilled," said the Spain Under-21 international, who revealed he did not have a good relationship with current Valencia skipper Dani Parejo.

"I know they're not in the same position as big European clubs, but I was able to lead that project and wanted to be treated as such."

Torres said he had more "peace of mind" about the move to the Premier League after speaking to City manager Pep Guardiola.

He said he started to think about leaving the La Liga side after helping Spain win last summer's European Under-19 Championship.

"The club told me personally they weren't counting on me," he added.

"They literally said I was the fifth winger in the squad, that reinforcements were coming and other players from other positions were ahead of me.

"It was a very hard blow for me, but what was worse was that they even put me on the market and offered me to teams in Spain."

Ah. I didn't zoom in. It looked about right for length to say Manchester City so my brain just told me that was it

Why quote Guardiola's total spend and compare to Klopps net spend?

Seem like lazy, sloppy journalism

According to this
https://www.transferleague.co.uk/man...managers-table
Guardiola has a net spend of £431m in his time at City

Does that count the hundreds of millions in special payments from overseas accounts or just the official ones

Asking to be made captain at the age of 20 because you don't get on with the current club captain doesn't sound like he gives a toss about the club/squad or morale, as well as arrogant, sounds like he'll fit in well at City

i think that the 5-subs rule will help them win the league next year.

If they need a goal in the last 5 minutes, then Pep can go with something like a 2-3-5 formation and it will just fuckin happen for them!!!

Has it been confirmed that this will go ahead in the PL? I know that FIFA said they were ok with it but it was up to the individual leagues/competitions to decide one way or another. I imagine that if it came to a vote it would be difficult to find 14 teams who would back it as at really mostly benefits the top 6 clubs.

I wanted us to sign Torres, think he's a really good player, but fuck me after reading his comments to the press, I'm happy we didn't sign him. Regardless of his issues, you shouldn't be airing that in public. Parejo is regarded as one of he better players in the league and is in his 30s, imagine a 20 year old expecting him to be stripped of the captaincy and parity of wages.

Think he'll be excellent over time though unfortunately. He's quite strong and runs well with the ball, has something about him. He's outshone Guedes who has fallen off the rails the last couple of seasons. Still quite raw. Would think if he played in Spain for longer he'd have converted into a forward, but sure Pep will keep him as a winger.

City are flat track bullies - they shit the bed when they need to turn up

Chelsea in the league, Arsenal in the cup and hopefully here.....had hoped them to get thumped in the semis. The further they go the more it affects their pre season

Ask yourself BT, if it were Sterling running through in the same circumstance with the defender, would you be complaining?

Here BT, ask Peter Walton what he thinks of Laporte moving across the run of the attacker who made no intent to touch him.

Sterling.....

You spend an awful lot of time on here posting at / talking to footballers and commentators as if, well, as if they were surreptitiously sneaking on here whilst doing their jobs.
