Chelsea have signed Borussia Dortmund attacker Christian Pulisic for 64m euros (£58m), but will loan the United States international back to the Bundesliga club until the end of the season.

18 months left on his contract.

Seen bits on Twitter suggesting we watched Werner this weekend, and we didn't like the price for Pulisic.

Not fussed in the slightest. Klopp, clearly didn't want him. I think that's 100% accurate otherwise he'd have been here. Pulisic hasn't actually been pulling up any trees. Sancho has overtaken him.

He's a decent player, no better than Pedro though.

He's one of those who clearly has qualities that would've suited us, which I think is more important than form. Klopp has said in two interviews now, that when a player comes here, he retrains them, as what they've done before is "wrong". As long as they have qualities i.e. pace, intelligence, etc, then form isn't a primary concern.

With Wilson's form for Derby looking pretty good, I think it's looking likely we'll see him come back for us (and start adapting to our style), and a forward with huge potential being signed (Werner).

Pulisic is only two years older then Hudson-Odai isn't he? Maybe they are putting their trust in the wrong player?

if we could prize Hudson Odoi away from them that would be good......

I think Pulisic would have been a decent signing - but he would have rotated with one of our wide forwards. So 60M is possibly too much to spunk on that.

I think with seeing Mo up top in a 4-2-3-1 formation leads me to believe that LFC will be in for a player that can be a #9. Werner would be a brilliant acquisition - i think it would allow Mo to go back to wide forward. Add Werner to our current front three, and against bus parkers then we can play all 4 of them. Against non bus parkers, then 3 of the 4 (3 of 5 including Shaq) can be selected. That signing would add so much depth.

Sell Origi and let Sturridge leave in the summer - and a bit of the fee would be paid and the wage bill wouldn't be dented. Especially if Lallana leaves too.

As for Chelsea, if Pulisic is there to replace Hazard, then I think they will have got weaker.

I think we'll keep Lallana, we have to mindful of our home grown quota, I think we'll give Wilson a go next season, for that reason too.

From the summer...

It is almost two years since Liverpool bid about £11 million for Pulisic, then a highly-rated 17-year-old. The offer was dismissed and the way his value has soared to £62 million, the reputed figure at which Borussia Dortmund would consider doing business, suggests a talent who has made remarkable strides in the interim.

But if you crunch the numbers, then it becomes clear why Liverpool — and specifically Klopp, given his inside knowledge of the player and his former club — would baulk at making a bid at that price.

In the past two seasons, Pulisic has scored seven goals and provided 14 assists in the Bundesliga. In some quarters that will not been viewed as too bad given that he does not turn 20 until next month (English team-mate Jadon Sancho, 18, scored once and produced four assists in 12 top flight games last term).

Yet Liverpool would not countenance paying £62million for a player to sit on the bench and those playing statistics indicate that Pulisic, adept on either wing and also as a No 10, would be some way behind a regular starting place at Anfield.

To pay that sort of money, Klopp would have to be buying someone whom he planned to start more often than not and Pulisic is not at that point in his career irrespective of what he, himself, might think.

Mohamed Salah scored 32 goals and produced 11 assists in the Premier League last season, Roberto Firmino 15 and seven respectively and Sadio Mané ten and seven. The bar is set higher than it has been in a long time.

For more context, Xherdan Shaqiri has scored 12 goals and delivered nine assists in two Premier League seasons at Stoke City. He is 26, of course, but cost £13.5 million.

Scratch a little further and Pulisic scored once in his final 19 appearances of the 2017-18 campaign and completed 90 minutes on just four occasions.

Still, Pulisic is a player that Klopp likes, so what happens next?

On the one hand, he pushes on and improves his output and productivity because Liverpool have shown this year with Virgil van Dijk, Naby Keïta and Alisson that they are not averse to paying big money for players they believe will come into the starting XI.

Alternatively, he sits tight on a contract which has two years left to run in the expectation that Dortmund would have to sell him for a reduced fee next summer rather than risk losing him for nothing.

Liverpool will continue to monitor the talent, but unless the numbers start stacking up on the pitch then there is no guarantee they will lead the chase.

There was a great write up on Reddit a few days back about Pulisic.

Sure he's had trouble getting into the Dortmund side this season, they are a much better side without him. Squad player, great piece of business for Dortmund. I suppose the huge fee with be recouped as he's an advertising dream in the states, their golden boy and he's a good looking dude too so if worst comes to worst and he flops I think Chelsea will get that money back on marketing no bother.

Talented guy no doubts but for an attacking mid or winger he averages about 4 league goals a season and even less assists, he's still very young though. Simple fact if Hazard leaves they are going to have a nightmare replacing him.

This kind of thing is really difficult to gauge - there wasn't one of us who would have foreseen the step up in level and impact Mane had on our team. It could be he's ready to make that step up at Chelsea, especially if they look to build around him like they have done with Hazard.

I think we were waiting to see if he suddenly had a breakthrough season and got 15-20 goals etc to justify the expected fee. He didn't. So as Paul Joyce wrote a few months back the numbers just didn't stack up.

The money they've ended up paying for someone with that few goals/assists, and almost out of contract, isn't looking like great business to be honest.

But Mane had 5 seasons of pretty impressive stats behind him before he moved and every time he moved onto a better club he got better. I think most thought he was a good player, but he has stepped up again.

I haven't seen anything in Pulisic's figures or the games I have seen to warrant such an inflated fee. I am also doubtful that if they sold Hazard he would be expected to fill his boots, they would get 150m+ and think they would look to bring in a Dybala/Reus etc A more established player.

It's true that their supporter base has gentrified since the roubles flooded in. But having grown up in their heartlands, I can tell you that the culture of their supporters is rotten to the core, and knowing this, that still quite sizable element is unlikely to go anywhere any time soon.

I only say this because my cousin supports them and she's top! Also she befriended a few of the Chelsea Pensioners and they were a nice bunch.

Maybe he'll be a hit, but I just can't help but feel he is ill suited to the Premier League, or even professional football, he has had weight problems in the past and he's only getting older.
