Yeah, probably a sign we're all getting old but it really doesn't feel like long ago at all. He was a decent backup option for them back in the day. Not much of a goalscorer but he was such a slippery fucker with the ball at his feet, and he had a nice cross on him.

Marcus Alonso at Chelsea is a similar style of player to him - he was mainly back up to Roberto Carlos or sometimes played ahead of him in that galactico side.

Didier Deschamps on Dembele

Quote:
"I know his excuses when Dembélé arrives late. In his defence he will say: 'I am not the only one.' Ousmane has a bit of a habit of being late."

"Whether for his club or in the French national team, he should be a little more attentive to the things that are part of the day-to-day life of an elite-level footballer."

"He's young, so I am not losing hope that he will realize what it means to be a world class footballer. The sooner he stops with his excuses, the better it will be for everyone."

"I know what Dembélé is doing and it has to change."

Hmm he does seem to have an attitude problem this lad doesn't he. Not quite Balotelli levels of trouble, but I am starting to see how he'd unsettle a dressing room like ours.

I still want to sign him though

I've quite a few Barca games this season and he's been awful. Can't pass for shit, his decision making is really poor and is consistently giving the ball away. Used to like him but really gone off him, hope we're not in for him.

They’ve a lot of central midfielders now - Arthur, Rakitic, Busquets, Vidal, Phil and now Rabiot.

I guess Rakitic, Vidal and Busquets are getting old. Prob means De Jong goes to PSG now.

Amazing how much of an impact Ronaldo had on them - once he left they couldn’t replace his goals. Bale/Benzema not up to the task and I suspect a big summer of upheaval there.

They’ve invested heavily on youth hoping to find the next big thing - Vinicius , Diaz, Rodrygo.

Haven't they been using Phil more on the wing though? I can't imagine he is enjoying himself as much as he was with us, on the pitch that is.

Would they let Phil leave? He's not been at his best for them but they already have a major squad rebuild to do without letting one of their best youngish players leave.

Same for Dembele I suspect, he's underperformed but they've ageing players they need to replace before having to worry about replacing him.

Still, they're 5 points clear at the top and 10 ahead of Madrid.

Yep, but the standard of La Liga has dropped off somewhat.

They're not in as big of a mess as Madrid, but they are not the force they once were either. Messi is 32 this year too!

they are on a good run. but they are an ageing team, Pique, Messi, Suarez, Alba, rakitic and Vidal all are past the best ....Although the majority of them are still class!!!

If Athletico Madrid had more of a will to win games they would be top now imo.

Hopefully with Barca's best players all being the wrong side of 30 and Madrid on the slide massively we will see less players aspiring to play over there. We have probably lost more players to Barca and Madrid over the last 10 years than any other club in England so it would probably be beneficial for us!

Supposed to have won the race for De Jong also which is another injection of young talent to their midfield.

If loads of players are getting old, wouldn't the chance to make a name for yourself and establish your place make it more attractive?

Meh, Sturridge did that in the 13/14 season, in fact I think it was a better goal. Also Stevie scored a similar one but at greater pace.

The goal was great but you are right about Studge and Gerard’s (away to Marseille) getting similar strikes but.........it was another hat tick for like his 650th goal......he is a phenomenon.

The best ever for me.

The Spanish League is pish though.

Will be interesting to see if Messi can tear it up in the CL as he’s been quiet during the sharp end in Europe for quite a few years.
