The (taking part in) Golf Thread

I felt the need to start a thread for all those with golfing experiences to discuss playing, equipment, deals, golfing tips or whatever. Enjoy!

Does anyone on here have any experience switching from Ping G5's to G20's? Is it worth it or would you recommend I go and get custom fitted clubs?
There is a custom fit company in Manchester called Tour X Golf- anyone know of them?

how much you're willing to pay/how serious at getting better/how often you're playing should determine whether to bother with custom, Ive never bothered with it

Only playing 2/3 times monthly at the moment- what I'm looking for is a set of clubs I'm "comfortable with", don't have to be the best, more mid range. I have a set of G5's at the moment but feel I need a better set. Would pay around 400/500 for the irons only.

if you're paying that much might as well, id try and get a deal to knock off a bit off the price of the irons and the fitting as well

You start a golf thread and immediately talk about gardening tools

Kingfunk, on a more serious note. Mizuno, are now releasing their new range of irons. The likes of the JPX 800 and the JPX 800 pro will be fairly cheap now.

Try and get youself a fitting with a Mizuno stockist. Having the correct shaft in the club is just as important as the head itself

I agree, I think personal fitting will make all the difference. Will check the Mizuno's out, have been looking at Ping's mostly, because it's what I already have, frustratingly whenever they bring out a new club, the previous model stays the exact same price.

Makes all the difference.. I'm playing 3 times a week now since I moved here and I cannot wait to get a trip north of the border to get fitted with a new set.

At the moment I'm using regular flex Cobras (large head) but my handicap has dropped from 21 to 12 in about 8 months, I've been told to get into single digits I need to be fitted, also I'm short 5'8" so my swing arc is unnaturally extended as most manufacturers stock length suit players 5'10/11'' .

The other things that helped have been to buy a 60* lob wedge and a replacement for my 3 iron in the form of a 24* Hybrid.

I could hit a 3 iron about 200 yds but I was struggling with poor lies and longish grass in the rough, the hybrid is great and naturally slightly inset so I'm hitting 225 yds with a 5 yard draw with the same swing, it saves me lots of times for that crucial 2nd shot.

massively changed my swing the last few weeks after pissing about on the range, using no leg movement at all. Shortening my swing to about 3/4, lower body fairly still and slowed down swing, its going the same distance and straighter just using my shoulder rotation makes me wonder what i could do with a proper swing

do you cock your wrists at the top of the backswing?

try it, time the swing in three beats;

1/ gentle back swing

2/ at top of swing cock wrists to natural fall

3/ swing, led by left, with right holding on like a handshake and the wrists will naturally break behind and through the ball and follow through.

the best way to describe the wrists breaking is that it resembles a match being struck...

the club head connects with the ball in a fashion that resembles a match being struck... the mental image of the point of contact ...apologies if it wasn't perfectly clear

Sorry for bumping this old thread, but I've just booked my 1st ever golf lesson for next week. Fancy getting into it so thought I'd take a look through some relevant threads on here.

Make sure your tutor has video...it's the best way to understand your errors rather than listening to someone tell you to bend this and change that...seeing it on playback is far simpler to make corrections..

good timely bump

i can feel the bug - i could be on the way back

my swing was just non existent after being in the wilderness for so long......to the point where, i get invited to golf days and i don't want to go cause i know i won't enjoy it.

had my first lesson last week and straight away the pro picked up on two or three small things that were causing all my issues.

since then i've been the range twice this week working on it and already the results have been staggering - and things have come flooding back.

i've now committed to the following....

a lesson saturday morning for the next 4 saturdays

a round every sunday for the next 4 sundays - part of works society. should be good game for me to get back into it - the first 3 rounds are just on local munis, the lads are just 'hacker's so whilst it'll be a bit competitive it will also be a laugh.

and then at least once during mid week, i'll be going the range to work on it.

i'm quite fortunate that somehow, i've still got a decent short game.

if - in 4 weeks time, i'm still feeling like this - i've played regularly, i've enjoyed the lessons/the society rounds and i've got some sort of decent swing/strike going i'll then know it's worth making the financial commitment of looking at new clubs/joining a golf club

I play off 13 and had my best round of the year yesterday morning, shot 76 at my course, Mid-Kent, it's a par 70. It should have been a 74 as I had 2 putts lip out but still very pleased with it. We have our pro-am day coming up on 7/6, I have managed to wangle myself a free round with our assistant pro this Wednesday as he is trying to sharpen up his game for it, hopefully he'll give me one or two tips while we are playing!!

I played La Finca yesterday quite long track at 6300 metres, severely hungover and shot a 3 over par 75

Played at Villamartin today.slow as fuck. 5 hours and 10 mins for the round. I complained to the course marshall and told him to speed up play and he told me it was my fault for playing alone I mean WTF, the problem is ahead of me after 14 holes I needed to be -2 for the last 4 holes to play to my handicap. Birdie, bogie, birdie, birdie finish. The 18th was a 20cm tap in, almost holed it with my approach shot

I agree in principle but I was at the back of the log jam of hackers. The course marshall was doing fuck al about the speed,of play. He spent all of his time hiding in the shade of trees......
