2016 Summer Olympic Games - Rio

Rio 2016 Olympics starts this weekend. London was pretty good with the mass of British medals so hopefully more of the same (especially if it means trouncing the Aussies again).

Looking forward to more horse dancing and dressing gown trip ups

Little apathetic on it all at the moment. I think its the whole Russian doping stuff that's done it. I really dont enjoy sport with that sort of spectre hanging over it.

I'm normally pretty excited about the Olympics but this time around the whole thing just feels tainted.

I have very little interest.

Have you seen all the mental stuff (Other than the doping stuff) that the IOC and sponsors are demanding?

Things like the US team going out in the parade near the end to keep people watching, to corporate entities in America not being allowed to use the hashtags #Rio2016 and #TeamUSA

That's nuts.

Given the teams go out alphabetically for the opening ceremony the USA are nearly last out of the traps anyway?

Of course

I'd not realised how great the time difference was for evening events/opening ceremony so it's pretty moot for us! I'm not staying up to 4am to watch it.

So far this looks like on of those team building days where you have to build a cradle for an egg using straws and newspaper.

If you are looking for an entry point to get to the Olympics, its got to be waterpolo? It looks like fun, but doesn't look like there is too much tekkers involved. Just work on getting yourself a buff pool bod, and ensure you have the ability to know how to throw and catch and tread water. Looks more like a load of mates mucking about rather than an Olympic event.

Ive tried water polo out. I thought id be pretty good at it. Ive always considered myself an incredibly strong swimmer and i played a lot of baseball as a kid (pitched a bit, but mainly played shortstop and 3rd base), so i can throw a ball hard and very accurately. Water Polo was surely the sport for me!

Its fucking brutal. When you have 3 people kicking you hitting you in the face with errant elbows and dragging you under to get the ball, it all gets bit too much

I think i swallowed more water in that half hour than in all my time surfing

Calamity in the cycling road race. Less than 20km to go out of 230km and 2 of the top 3 hit the deck.

I think the blast was a controlled explosion on a suspicious package. Probably a competitors change of clothes

Haha.

Interesting, I take it it all takes place in a deep pool? Still, in terms of getting yourself to the olympics it looks a good bet. Obviously there is more speedo tinkering going on below the waste than the camera shows.

Yep pools about 2.5 metres deep. There is so much kicking and grabbing under the water, its seriously brutal.

I honestly thought i was going to dominate. I won pretty much every swimming race at my school and played state baseball as a kid. How could i not kick ass at this I thought.

Its really tiring too, you're treading water without a break or being able to touch the ground to give your legs a rest. My legs were like jelly afterwards.

It was good fun though

It was pretty bad, landed on the kerb with her ribs/back and the ground with her head. A bit weird though how she locked the front brake and went flying. I haven't done that since I was about 10.

Done a few front break locks in my time, including getting flipped over and laid in the street bike over my head unable to move until someone helped me.

Nothing close to that though, can only hope she is okay.

Yeah, that was a shocker of a fall.

Strange one straight over the bars, going straight, looked like she just kind of forgot to take the corner, hit the brakes and took off.

I think she was drifting sideways a bit at the time, or rather coming out of a skid.
