From today's Guardian...

Not sure if I agree with it all, but it's entertaining nonetheless.

'Shredding his legacy at every turn '

Sir Alex Ferguson's brilliance famously knocked Liverpool off their perch. Now his incompetence is doing the same to Manchester United. How did it come to this, wonders Rob Smyth

Monday July 31, 2006
Guardian Unlimited

It was John Cleese, in Clockwise, who said: "I can take the despair. It's the hope I can't stand." Manchester United fans would beg to differ. Usually, the best thing about pre-season is the hope: reality's incisors have yet to pierce the gums of optimism, and fans can live off the balmy, often barmy belief that this is their year. For supporters of most of the other 91 English clubs, that's the mood right now. For United fans? Forget it. After three seasons of papering over the cracks, it seems most United fans are awaiting the moment that the fault lines tracing a veiny path across Old Trafford are exposed.

Almost everything about the club reeks of disarray. Owned by the Glazers, who push buttons from a remote hideaway like Dr Evil; run by a manager who shreds his legacy at every turn; almost exclusively represented by the inadequate (Darren Fletcher), the odious (Rio Ferdinand) or a loathsome fusion of the two (Kieran Richardson); unable to close a deal for West Brom's reserve keeper, never mind the new Roy Keane. The signing of Michael Carrick, a Pirlo when a Gattuso was needed, is a band aid for a bullet wound, and a ludicrously expensive one at that.
If anything, it's a surprise that United have bought anyone at all. This summer, they have been like a pathetic drunk lumbering across a dancefloor at 1.45am, trying to get off with everything that moves. No matter how many people they move in for - and if reports are to be believed, United have made offers for dozens of players - nobody wants to go near them. And the one person who surely would, Damien Duff, was allowed to slip into the arms of Newcastle for less than United paid for Patrice Evra. You couldn't make it up. You don't have to.

United finished second last season, but that said more about the deficiency of the Premiership than their own. Arsenal will not have a four-month blind spot this season, while all evidence suggests that Liverpool's gradient will continue on its upward trajectory. With Tottenham getting stronger, even with the loss of Carrick, it is entirely conceivable that, if they start slowly, United could finish fifth; in today's environment, that would be disastrous.

The problems are so obvious, so fundamental, as to be beggar belief that they have not been addressed. Just as the glory years of 1992 to 2001 will only fully be appreciated in 20 years' time, so will Ferguson's subsequent negligence. It is particularly bewildering that a man who once exerted such an unyielding grip on every single aspect of the club that he had to be virtually coerced into delegating has let things slip to this extent. Take the Cristiano Ronaldo situation: Ferguson said recently that he had not even spoken to Ronaldo since the World Cup, a staggering dereliction of duty that is in total contrast to the us-against-the-world protection that he gave to David Beckham - and for which, for a time, he was so thrillingly rewarded - in 1998.

Once upon a time Ferguson could play 'who blinks first' with fate and win every time, his iron will shaping his destiny exactly as he wanted. Now he is reduced to uttering garbage like "it's like having a new signing" of Paul Scholes, Ole Solskjaer, Gabriel Heinze and Alan Smith, the irrational if-I-say-it-enough-it-might-happen gibberish you'd associate with a serial loser like Kevin Keegan. These days, the man they call The Hairdryer is full of nothing but hot air.

Ferguson's squad, once so taut, is a baggy mess of has-beens, never-will-bes and Liam Miller. The simple repetition of 4-4-2, of Giggs, Scholes, Keane, Beckham, Cole and Yorke, has given way to myriad tactical and personnel changes, to a ruinous obsession with utility players and tinkering. It's a truly appalling fact that, with Ruud van Nistelrooy gone, none of United's outfield players have played in only one position at the club. A nadir was reached in the FA Cup game at Wolves last season, when nearly

Every year for the last three people have knocked united. While they are not the fearsome force of old they are still a dangerous team who will always score goals. I think this article is just a cheap attack on a currently fashionable target.

Fergie remains a good manager. He hasn't been able to replace Keane, but can you honestly think of a player that has been available and who he should have bought to fill the whole.

I think that United now have a very good core of a team - Van Der Sar, Ferdinand, Heinze, Neville, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Ronaldo, Rooney and Saha would walk into almost any PL team. Admittedly I think Fergie has work to do to replace Giggs and Scholes for the future and needs a CM and Striker before the new season, but he still has time.

I think United will get third behind Chelsea and ourselves.

Yes they'll obviously be up there - this was a very one sided article. Loved this gem though...

write united off at your peril, they may have gorssly overpaid for carrick but hes astill a quality player who has improved their squad.

dont forget they finished ahead of us last year with a woeful midfield

they are declining, but we cant sound their death knell yet.

It definitely means more that it's written by a SCUM fan. Had it been written by a Citeh fan one could have just dismissed it as jealousy or bitterness. The fact that it's written by one of them makes it so much sweeter because they recognise themselves that it's falling apart.
I'm not going to jump the gun and pronounce Fergie's SCUM dead just yet, but the decline has begun and it's going to get better.

One of these days the Man U death knell will sound - let's just hope it is this year. Carrick is a good player, but as I mentioned in another thread, a partnership of Carrick and Scholes will not bully and intimidate most teams now.

It would be nice if Ronaldo starts kicking up a stink too - and causes some disruption with Rooney. Man U imploding would be great!

Well, that's just silly.

Utd. aren't nearly as bad as all that and they're likely to make another couple of good signings in the next two weeks.

Carrick wasn't worth 18m but at least they won't have to play O'Shea or Fletcher in midfield anymore. They'll probably be stronger this year than last year.

Carrick's not an "attacking midfielder" Ian.

dww
01-08-06, 11:29 AM
He plays holding midfield in a similar way to Xabi Alonso. However like Alonso i think that the way to get the best out of his passing is for the other CM to be useful at tackling as well. I have seen Xabi's great stats for last year but he still looked a far better player when Sissoko was in the team helping to disrupt attacks. So basically I think United still need another CM and think that Senna would look an ideal partner to Carrick.

I'm not sure if Senna's the "ideal partner" really. Where's the goals going to come from in that pairing?

I'd have bought one or the other, and an attacking midfielder.

Carrick is considered a defensive midfielder. Jol even stated that his replacement was just a good a 'holding midfielder.'

Good article. All Empires eventually come crushing down.

The decline began when Beckham, arguably Mr.Man United, was shipped out. Sure, he came close to becoming bigger than the club - but he was as much an iconic figure to the Scum as Gerrard is to us. Giggs, Scholes and Solskjaer are on their last legs - which will eventually leave an even bigger hole in their problematic midfield.

The Glazier's truly did "buy very high" and will end up "selling very low."

How many goals did Sissoko and Alonso provide? I think the key for a CM pairing is to get the ball, keep the ball and distribute it to players in good positions. A goal threat is handy, but I think a solid two in midfield allows you to play wingers like Christiano Ronaldo with a greater level of freedom, thus increasing the teams overall goal threat.

Shhhhh, I'm always right Ryan :crackoff:

I don't percieve him as a defensive midfielder though, in the way that Manure fans hope. The guy will never be a tough tackler (unlike the last player to wear the 16) and a midfield containing Carrick & Scholes will get ripped apart.

I'd always want a tougher guy alongside him, he's is a good player and elegant admittedly, but for
