Unlikely given that Agassi will play Nadal in the 3rd Round...

I wouldn't mind another Federer vs Agassi Final though...

Rafael Nadal is getting 4s in some places. That's not bad considering him and Federer are on opposite sides in the draw.

Agassi had cortisone shot after Pavel match

August 30, 2006

NEW YORK (AP) -- Andre Agassi's first-round victory at the U.S. Open was more painful than anyone realized.

Bothered by a bad back most of this season, Agassi said he could barely stand an hour after his match ended past midnight early Tuesday, and went to the hospital for a cortisone injection after waking up.

"The inflammation was pretty bad, and I just don't want to go off the court limping," Agassi told USA Network on Wednesday. "It's not what I want to do."

The 36-year-old Agassi, who will retire after the U.S. Open, was out at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Wednesday for some practice. He plays his second-round match against eighth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis on Thursday night.

"He's going to leave it out there. I've never had a cortisone shot, but from what I've heard, you feel like you can run through walls," Andy Roddick said. "He's been playing through that pain for a couple of years now, so I think he's used to it."

He`s just won a marathon 5 setter with Marcos Baghdatis [6-4 6-4 3-6 5-7 7-5]
He needed a cortisone injection for his recurrent back problem after his 1st round match
So he`ll need to recover before Round 3
I think if he gets through his next match I think he`ll be due to play Roddick in Round 4

Agassi has another injection ahead of next Open match

September 1, 2006

NEW YORK (AP) -- As bad as his back has been, Andre Agassi never resorted to taking injections during a tournament. This U.S. Open is hardly any event, though: It's his final one, and Agassi now has received two types of shots to deal with the pain.

Agassi was given an injection of anti-inflammatory medication Friday, his trainer, Gil Reyes, said in a telephone interview. Unlike Tuesday, when Agassi went to a hospital for a cortisone shot, this procedure was done at Agassi's hotel, because his back hurt too much for a car ride.

The eight-time Grand Slam title winner didn't practice at all Friday, the day before his third-round match against German qualifier Benjamin Becker.

Agassi was examined by the U.S. Open's chief medical officer, Brian Hainline, following his theatrical five-set, 3-hour, 48-minute second-round victory over eighth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis, a match that stretched from Thursday night into Friday.

A hobbling Agassi appeared to have trouble swatting autographed balls into the stands when his victory was complete and shifted in his chair as he tried to find a comfortable position during the postmatch news conference. Reyes said the 36-year-old Agassi needed to lie on the ground outside the players' lounge in Arthur Ashe Stadium while waiting to be driven to his hotel.

"Andre's back was stiffening up. Pretty excruciating," Reyes said. "The inflammation was causing tremendous pain and an obvious lack of mobility."

Agassi has dealt with a painful sciatic nerve for some time now; it's why he played only 15 matches in 2006 before the Open.

Reyes estimated Agassi has had eight to 10 cortisone injections over the past four years, including the one after his 3 1/2 -hour first-round victory. There are limits to what are considered safe doses and frequency of such shots, which is why Agassi was given a different medicine Friday by a tournament doctor.

"Believe me, I'll exhaust all possibilities short of taking too many risks for long term," Agassi said. "I do want to make sure I give myself the best look here, but I don't want to compromise the rest of my life."

Each time he steps on court could be Agassi's last match as a pro, and Saturday afternoon he'll face Becker, who's ranked 112th and won the 2004 NCAA singles championship for Baylor University. Benjamin's not related to Boris -- a question he gets everywhere he goes, of course.

Becker, 25, grew up pretending he was Agassi when playing with friends, and he tried to catch a glimpse of the match against Baghdatis, but was shooed into a tunnel because there weren't seats available. Becker did get a sense of what it was like to hear 23,000 fans rooting for Agassi and against his opponent.

"I'm trying to prepare for that, because that's something I've never, never experienced," said Becker, who recalled trying to deal with venomous crowds of about 200 when he was in college.

"That's why I play tennis. That's also why I practiced and everything, to play in the atmosphere like that and in a stadium like that against a guy like that, a guy like Agassi," Becker said. "That's what I been looking forward to since I started playing tennis."

Top-ranked Roger Federer enjoying watching Agassi-Baghdatis, even though he had to be awake and ready for his own 11 a.m. start Friday. Watching on TV while in bed, Federer said he was just about peeking out from under his blankets, nervous for both players.

"Fantastic. Loved it," Federer said. "Back and forth. The cramping. The respect for each other. The way the fans got into it. It was just great. Agassi the winner in the end -- it's a great story."

Federer, who's all of 25, knows what it's like to be part of such a draining match.

"I was tired the next day -- and the day after that," Federer said.

Which is why Agassi's team might be keeping close tabs on the weather: The forecast for Saturday called for a 100 percent chance of rain.

"I would only imagine that any additional rest would be a help," Reyes said.

Agassi's father told ABC News he hopes his son decides to quit before getting on the court again.

"If it's up to me, I won't let him go to play tomorrow," Mike Agassi said. "He hasn't talked to me, (but) that's how I feel about it. I don't think he should play."

Reyes, though, said there hadn't been any consideration of pulling out.

"The hope is obviously that Andre be able to compete and that his body can match his heart," said Reyes, Agassi's trainer for 17 years. "There is no big picture. This is the big picture. He must bring his all and leave his all. Once Andre announced his intention to retire, everything became about getting him here. Now that he's here ... he has no option but to do everything he can to fight to the finish."

Just watched Murray beat Fernando Gonzalez and, jesus, I could really warm to this lad. I never thought I'd say that but he was immense just now and as things stand he's got to be amongst the top half dozen players in the world.

Thank god we didn't get that /Gonzales/ ;) Nice touch for Murray to recognise Gilbert straight after the win.

Hopefully he can break into the top 16 now, I never understand this top 20 thing, top 16 is much better, you stay away from the other 15 seeds in the draw! Obviously, top 8 is even better, and with some bulking up & fitness, he has the ability to get there easily, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Thats the thing with Murray.
In a one game situation he is a top 10 in the world player.
IT a situation where he is playing game after game, he doesnt quite seem to be at that level yet. But as you say, he will get there. Like his passion for the game.

Really? For my money this era, with Federer and Nadal fighting out (with a host of other talented players like Gasquet and Murray ready to step up), is a whole lot more exciting. While Agassi was a swashbuckling baseliner who was great to watch, Sampras (as great as he was) was boring. Ruthless and efficient but robotically dull.

Federer is the most beautiful player there's ever been - he's so good it almost makes me weep. He plays shots Sampras wouldn't have dreamed of playing.

His dominance may turn some people off but when the dominant player is as perfect as Federer...well it doesn't get any better IMO. He's a genius in his field.

Agreed but I reckon the current crop potentially could be as exciting. The likes of Hewitt and Roddick are struggling to keep up and the gap between Nadal and the rest is getting closer - while Federer remains on his perch.

Yeah, but I'm looking back to hazy memories where everything seemed great.

Sampras may not have played with a very interesting style, but the games between him and Agassi were always eventful and full of character.

I think the Federer and Nadal rivalry has the potential to be even better...

Sampras vs Agassi was awesome, but when it came down to Grand Slams (bar the French), Sampras always seem to have that extra more. Matches at the Australian Open seem evenly balanced, but at Wimbledon/US Open, Pete Sampras always came out on top - rivalry is much more exciting when its more evenly balanced.

While Federer is the undisputed number one tennis player, he does struggle somewhat against Nadal. Give Nadal about one more year to work and develop his game, and I can see this matchup blossoming into an even better rivalry...

I gotta say though, while Federer is amazing, I much prefer watching Roddick. I guess it's the way he puts everything in to every point. Federer is obviously a freakishly good tennis player whose in a different class to Roddick. But I like tennis players to have more emotion and be a bit more mercurial than Federer is.

Fedderer is just a phenom, has to be nailed on as the greatest player of all time.
Some of his shots were outstanding against Roddick, that alone for me would make him better to watch. If I were to pick a player who plays with his heart on his sleve it would be Murray, he needs to get into matches quicker and improve his stamina though.

Yes Roddick is exciting with all that effort and power, but it was Federer who had me roaring my approval last night - some of the shots he plays are just out of this world.
