Moyes: It's Liverpool's fault we can't sign anyone

Everton boss David Moyes has hit out at the "irresponsible" attitude of some Premier League clubs during this summer's transfer window.

Moyes sealed a £4million move for Phil Jagielka from Sheffield United last week and is keen to add more players to his squad, but admits he is struggling to compete with some of the top flight's big spenders.

The likes of Manchester United, Tottenham, Liverpool, Fulham and West Ham have splashed millions of pounds on new players this summer and Moyes fears inflated prices could have negative consequences for the game.

He told Everton's official website: "I think there has been some irresponsible buying and spending by some clubs and it makes it a bit more difficult if you've got less money to spend than that."

He added: "We'd like to add to the squad and I know the supporters are desperate to see new faces coming in, no more so than me, but things out there in the market are tight.

"But we are certainly doing everything we can to strengthen the squad and give ourselves a chance. We've done it that way for the past few years and we'll continue to do so.

"I've been a supporter, in fact I still am a supporter, but we're always quite cagey here and we don't give too much away partly because people know that we don't have the funds to compete at the top end."

maybe he should start up a scouting network in europe instead of signing top class defenders that he hasn't even seen play

It is our fault they have no money, because if uefa were fair we would have been kicked out of the champions league in 2005/2006 (what's the point of having the defending champions play in the tournament), they would have gotten easier opposition in the qualifiers and gone on to win the champions league, defending it successfully this year.

I actually think his problem is irresponsible spending (or at least bidding) by Sunderland, Derby etc. They are raising the prices of average players which in turn is having an impact with the mid-range players. I can't imagine the signing of Torres has affected Moyes plans and Benayoun seems a pretty fair price at £4m. I would go so far as to imagine that Moyes was being deliberately ambiguous or was misquoted to make more impact in that story.

It all seems very defensive. I imagine they will be overtaken by the likes of Portsmouth this season who seem to be in a much stronger position in the transfer market.

funny how he says negative and we would look at it like ambition

Yeah but the article actually tried to put the same impression across with it's list which I found interesting.

P.S. Lazy git, go back and edit it now.

more teams at the aldi end of the premiership have more money and those average players are all after a big pay day before they get found out. I remember having a chat to one of the players down at portsmouth and asked what took him there, he told me quite simply they offered the most money!!

there will be a few teams who will struggle next year in my opinion as they will be awash with merceneries, while not wholly agreeing with Rafa's policy of pennypinching at least we are getting players who are 150% committed to us.

Did you seee nugents interview? even admitted portsmouth wasnt his first choice,

Maybe, they can pretend to sign some world class players?
