Darrell Hair offered to resign as an umpire in exchange for a payment of $500,000, the International Cricket Council has revealed.
He made his offer in a letter to the ICC after last weekend's controversial end to the fourth Test at The Oval.
ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed told a news conference in London that Hair had been under great stress.
But he said he was satisfied Hair had not made the offer with any "dishonest, underhand or malicious intent".
Speed added: "He was seeking to find a solution that was in the interests of the game."

Well yeah but it's a bit late now. He's claiming he was under serious stress (fair enough, I'm sure he was) but there's no excuse for asking for half a million bastard quid in exchange for his resignation!!
It's over for Hair, surely.

:haha:
He'll carry on, no doubt about it. I don't understand why he was targetted for the decision against Pakistan, it was a joint decision by both umpires and I think the Pakistan team used the fact that Hair has had allegations made against him in the past as the reason to target him. I have sympathy with Hair on this, he's been made to be the villain of the piece when in actual fact he did nothing wrong during that Test match. He played it by the book and got abuse for it. The other umpire didn't get any flack which is disturbing and one wonders whether there was any racial nature of the targeting of Hair.
Having said all that, he's just made himself out to be a complete tool by asking for this payment.
Here's the original transcripts.

I don't think he's done much wrong during the test. He had an issue and raised it. Pakistan chucked their rattles out of the pram when they should have just got on with it - a lot of the legendary reverse swing bowlers admit to scuffing the ball up in the past (Imran Khan for example), so the precedent is there.
It's funny watching Hair squirm around now. There's certainly no love lost there on m part. The sooner him and Steve "Blindasabat" Bucknor retire the better.
I think he was wrong to not continue the match to be honest. I know it was both umpires who reached the decision but if they had come out and carried on the game it would all have been forgotten and the public would have got a days extra play.

I understand that but as an umpire it's his paid duty to uphold the laws of the game, and not to twist them around for the sake of the crowd. If the laws of the game need updating, then so be it.
I'm not entirely sure which law they decided that the Pakistanis had broken but if the match referee thinks the game should go ahead then I would imagine that the law left it up to the umpires discression - so it came down to a judgement call by them and sothey should be held accountable.
I think if you fail to turn up, as the Pakistan team did after tea, then you automatically forfeit the game. The umpires gave them ample chance to play on, they even went to the dressing room to find out if they were coming out.
The laws of the game should have allowed the game to continue, but the laws didn't allow it.
Anyway, this 500000 dollar hush money business is utterly ridiculous. I'm amazed the ICC revealed it to the public.

Because they wanted to indirectly discredit Hair. If he retires under a cloud of bad publicity the tough decisions are made for them since Pakistan refuse to take part in any game he umpires. Combine that with not umpiring Aussie matches cause he's supposed to be impartial then that's about a quarter of the decent test playing nations he cant umpire.

This is a bit late now...but I was there at that match, frankly I'd have been happy for the announcer to actually tell us what was going on rather than leave us in the dark.
At least we can get a 40% refund!
I was undecided about this issue until the other day whe sky caught Shoab lifting the seam the other day in the one-day international

They haven't got any evidence of it in the actual test though have they?

We don't know do we? The hearing hasn't convened yet. We do know that the english team manager visited the match referee between the 2nd and 3rd tests to say that they were concerned about the amount of ball tampering that was going on. Recently Afridi was caught on camera by a indian newspaper saying this "off the record":
begin quote:
The ICC hearing will start with Pakistan under a further cloud after Afridi's candid admission that they tampered with balls to help their bowlers on lifeless subcontinental wickets.
Asked whether his side got time to tamper with the ball, Afridi was caught on video by India's Times Now news service saying: "We do not have that much time. Only (a) few get to do some bit of ball tampering. If the weather is dry and hot then you can get some help from the pitch while bowling.
"But you also have to help the ball yourself. You have to tamper with the ball to make it swing

very naughty.

Indeed.
Oh well if it's true then they do deserve it, the ICC need to sort out the crappy penalty given to the other team though, 5 runs isn't going to make a difference.

Thing is they all do it, all the sides. This either needs to be made legal or stamped out all toghether.

You can hardly make it legal, you'd end up with only half a ball
It needs to be stamped out. Both umpires should inspect the ball after every over.
