View Full Version : Opposition Managers you respect

Following on from Tom's thread about Wenger's comments on the Ashley Cole chant, are there any opposition team managers you have come to have high regard for or just have a general liking of?
This is being posted before tonight's Panorama documentary so some opinions may change over the next couple of hours.
Personally, I have a lot of respect for Chris Coleman (and not just because he's welsh). He hasn't got the easiest job down at Fulham but always comes across on TV with a great deal of dignity and honesty. I also liked the way he dealt with the Malbranque situation.
I also like Ian Holloway but only for the comedy value. He's hilarious.

I like Alan Pardew. He's an excellent coach who gets his team playing above their skill level and makes them believe that they're the best. He's humble in victory and defeat and I thought the way he took the F.A. Cup final loss was very good.
There are other managers that I respect like Coleman, Redknapp and as much as I hate to say it, due to him being a manc, Steve Coppell

Forgot to add Paul Jewell to my list.

Alan Pardew is a good shout. A bit like Coleman but probably the better manager :handshake:
I used to like Ian Holloway but now he appears to be trying far too hard to be funny. Becoming a tad irritating for me.
I'll go along with Pardew (I wasn't keen for a long time but he's earned my respect) and Jewell.
Purely in a football sense, I have loads of respect for Arsene Wenger.

I think Coleman does an excellent job at Fulham aswell. He's had to put up with all sorts of rubbish over the last few years and if anyone else had been in charge of them then I think they may well have went down last year. Their home form has been excellent in the last couple of seasons. He's one of the games good guys IMHO.
How about managers you don't like?
Mourinho, Wenger, Ferguson, Jol, Allardyce, Bruce. The list is endless!!!:D

Stuart Pearce has a very down to earth approach and has integrity (let Robbie go without a fuss) and I hate to say it, but Mark Hughes often says a lot of good things... said we had the right to defend our CL, for example... he's bound to have said some bad shit in the meantime, but he started well.

Pearce and Hughes, despite him being a manc and chav, are another 2 good shouts.:handshake:

As much as i hate him. He, for me, is the best manager in the game!

If its any consolation Coppell is a Liverpool fan. I like Coppell, Wenger, Stuart Pearce goes about things in the right way. I also like guys who develop youth, such as Mclaren and Paul Hart. Lots of respect to Dario Gradi as well.

Wenger when he keeps his mouth shut, got to admire his eye for (foreign) talent and his general financial accumen in the market.
Pearce purely for his attitude and level of respect he shows to others.
Jewell for what he achieved with Wigan last year, playing footy the right way too.
Not based in uk but Gus Hiddink has a fantastic record and reputation, although I fear he has already been sucked into the dark sphere of Abrahamovic's influence. :(
Martin O'Neill definitely. Also Chris Coleman, Stuart Pearce, Alan Curbishley (when he had a job), Dario Gradi, Dave Jones & Paul Jewell.

He may be a c.unt of the highest order, but I don't know why no one has mentioned Ferguson here. From a footballing perspective, his record is incredible, as is the fact that he has been 20 years in his job.
I cannot wait to see the fucker leave the Scum!
You have to respect the guy for what he's achieved and for building that 90's scum side - even if you hate him with every sinew of your being.
When it comes to other managers, I've been very impressed with Pardew. He seems to be a gent, and his teams play good football in a fair way.
The way in which the West Ham players and Pardew conducted themselves after what must have been a gutting defeat in the Cup Final was exemplary.
I also admire Jewell and Pearce.
Obviously Rafa
Dario Grady, Mike Newell, he's a red although he played for the bitters but it took some cojones to come out with the bung allegations.
Wenger, got a great record.
Bobby Robson, managed many a top side and is one of the nicest most enthusiastic guys in the game.
I don't like either of them, but I have a lot of respect for Wenger and Ferguson.
Ferguson may be a prize prick, but his achievements are undeniable.
Rijkaard, Ranieri, Trappatoni, Lippi and Mancini. Classy guys. Especially Lippi.

I used to like Trappatoni, until he started working for Salzburg

If its any consolation Coppell is a Liverpool fan.
Is that why he lost 9-0 in 89 with palace then.
I have loads of respect for most of the managers already mentioned.
Even though I never liked Gordon Strachan (because of who he played for), I love the way he always answered back to those reporters who posed silly questions. He really brought us lots of smiles and laughs.
Sometimes he went over board when moaning, but all in all I really liked him.
I also think that David Moyes is a prat. I recall him sipping champaigne and toasting to Champs League football when the bluenoses finished 4th.....and they never even made it through qualification.....quality... however I think he is a very good caoch and manager
In terms of coaching and management I think the PL has come a really long way in the last 5 years. I think every manager currently in the division deserves respect for their ability - with the possible exception of Gareth Southgate who has only just started in the job so it is impossible to judge him.
