View Full Version : New England manager

England clearly need to get rid of Steve "I'm in charge" McLaren but who should replace him?

They need someone who has managed successfully in one of the three major leagues (England, Spain and Italy) and has international experience, preferably at major tournaments. The right candidate should also understand that the media spotlight will be on them and should have experience at handling them. The right candidate should ideally be available right now and able to start immediately. Also it would help if they were familiar with the English game, knew the players and have had some contact with and experience of handling the labyrinthine decision-making processes of the FA.

Here's the shortlist:

It's a tough one between options 2 and 3. I think 3 wins it due to having been working more recently and I worry that the game may have moved on since 2 last did anything of note.

Also, 3 wouldn't cost anything since the FA already pay him.

I wanted MON from the start and I still do - what he's doing at Villa shows his class as a manager. The FA are turds picking Sven's assistant coach as his successor.

I think the FA wanted Venables all along but were aware of the backlash if they appointed him immediately since they got rid of him before for reasons that were not related to the team performances. Since then the FA have been exposed more than once. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Maclaren ousted and Venables put in charge.

Allegedly they've never been seen in the same place at the same time. A little like Michael and La Toya Jackson :eyebrow:

Serious answer: I'd go back to Glen Hoddle, easily the best England manager since Sir Bobby and possibly better than him. He got sacked because of comments he made about reincarnation. Sven went around having affairs with all unsundry. The reason I'd go for Hoddle is that I think England needs an Englishman in charge and Hoddle is proven at international management and he is older and wiser now.

But he still uses the word "them" when he should use "those" instead. The sign of a cretin.

Terry Venables with Stuart Pearce as his number 2 is surely the best combination England could go with.

Staunton looks more like Stan Laurel with every passing day as Irish manager.

I think he would do a good job. Lyon seem pretty good. Not sure it would happen though. Certainly better than Hoddle. I thought Hoddle was sacked for the wrong reasons but he just like Eriksson failed to make a team capable of doing anything other than being hard to beat and didn't have the ability to make telling changes to counteract opponents or change the course of the game, and if anything the England squad is now less suited to his prefered 3-5-2 system than it has been for a while.

Agreed Houlier would do a fine job, his problem was not tactical but that he bought too many shite players. with this taken out of his hands, I'm sure he would do a great job in the England set up. I just wonder whether the youth would get enough of a chance under him.

Houllier failed to get a pretty good French squad to the World Cup in 1994.

Helped them win it in 1998 tho didn't he

OK so appoint him Director of Football like he was when France won it. He's good on structure, not so good at man-management and tactics IMO.

He inherited a pretty good squad at Lyon - they had won the title four times in a row, hadn't they? I know players have left and he's brought others in but he did have something of a headstart at Lyon.

i was actually taking the piss, but if all you people want him as national coach, good luck to you all.

do you not all feel that he took alot of credit for France winning the world cup, in a similar way he claims to have built melwood? even though alot of it was in the pipeline before he was appointed?

hmmm

Yes - I agree.

Out of interest mate, who would you rather manage Wales:

a) Tosh

b) Houllier

Big bad Sam for me - we'd play holding, defensive football but at least we'd have a chance of winning a few matches and play physical, fast football. With the players we have, I think he's best suit the job.
