Michael Owen: I'm not shocked by how far Liverpool have fallen down the ladder

Michael Owen insists he is not surprised at how swiftly Liverpool have plummeted down the table.

Owen won four major trophies with the Anfield outfit, including three during the 2000-01 campaign under Gerard Houllier.

But after finishing second two seasons ago, Liverpool missed out on a Champions League place last term and have been forced to bring Kenny Dalglish back to spark a revival after a dismal Christmas period that included defeats to Wolves and Blackburn, sent them tumbling into the wrong half of the table.

Not of this is Owen's concern anymore. Indeed, the 31-year-old was part of the Manchester United side that turfed Liverpool out of the FA Cup at Old Trafford yesterday.

However, he remains close to Steven Gerrard - who was sent-off - and Jamie Carragher - who missed out through injury - and has strong opinions about life at his old club.

'I am not particularly surprised,' he said. 'I would say their position reflects where they are right now.

'They are in the middle of a transitional period and off the pitch they have had a change of ownership.

'They are also very reliant on a couple of star players and if they are out injured, they have tended to struggle.'

Although Owen's move to Manchester United ensures he will never be welcomed back into the Liverpool fold with open arms, it does allow him a detached perspective.

And even if he opts not to share the information he has been given, it is evident things have been going badly wrong behind the scenes.

'I don't think they would ever forgive me if I said what they had told me,' reflected Owen.

'Throughout all those successful years Liverpool built their foundation on passing and moving.

'But, from when I was there, everything has changed, barring two players. They even got rid of the doctors and the medical staff.

'Maybe there have not been enough Liverpool players over the last 10 years. If there was just one reason, then it would have been fixed. But there have been so many.'

I'll never forgive him for what he's done, no matter how many goals he scored for our Club

Nothing controversial in what he is saying really.

He's right in saying we only have two top class attacking players and we do struggle without them. We are also in a transitional stage and a fall from grace is no suprise due to selling two top players in Alonso and Masch, as well as losing Sami, Arbeloa and Yossi.

        Alonso>Meireles
        Masch>Poulsen
        Sami>Soto

Massive difference in class between the above three players. Johnson and Cole can hopefully improve under Kenny and at least match what Arbeloa and Yossi brought us.
        Forwards.......

I agree Danny to a point but, he deserves no respect from the fans after what he's done to the Club so really, he should keep his big gob shut over matters that he has against the Club or Players

He shouldn't talk about Liverpool what so ever. We don't care about his opinions. He should try and focus on getting back in to the England team which has allways been his priority...

As expected, he does his talking after the game. Wish Gerrard had of done the two footed tackle on the midget TBH.

Wasn't this the interview he did with ITV before the game?

Owen has become a sad lonely individual, there is nothing worse than having no roots. He destroyed his, for the price of a shilling.
Those that hid Anne Frank were breaking the law.
Those that killed her, were following the law.

.......... My only concern is this statement here. What has he been told and how detrimental is it to the club. Also why should they be discussing things that are confidential to the club to the opposition??
"That's how I found myself on the Kop that day I had my blue-and-white scarf safely tucked away inside my coat as I listened to Liverpool songs and swayed with the masses.

Then City scored and I screeched and this big bloke, a Liverpool supporter, made towards me and I thought he was going to throttle me. But he just pulled my scarf from under my coat so it lay on the outside, and said: "You should always be proud of your colours, lad."
